I was blessed to spend almost two months with two great Latvians. I was amazed by how smart, educated, polite, and generous they were. Hey everyone! This was me a few years ago, I loved reading all of your comments and think about Latvia all the time. I did want to say that I meant no offense when comparing Russians or other Eastern Europeans to Latvians. In fact, I tend to typically relate Latvians more to Scandinavians. Either way, you definitely have your own identity :). Most people assumed I was living in Russia or learned Russian but I always made sure to make the distinction between the two cultures and languages after living there so I apologize if it seems I did not give your country credit for having its own culture. The description I gave with the two cultures came from a friend who had lived in Russia and I felt some of what they said did relate to Latvians so I used that, but the two are definitely very different!
I've never heard a more honest description of us. I didn't really realise these things before, I was always puzzled about why people in other countries can chat each other up without knowing their name.
caurvējš isn't bad luck it's mean that only obout your health! it's often is said for children because they run a lot and they get sweaty and when cold wind gets in their backs they can have some and unhealthy stuff going on their bodies.
I have lived in Latvia 7 years and what you say about them being cold this also applies to Finland Russia and all the Baltic’s But you can break the ice once you have talked to them. The Finish are the most cold out of all the countries.
Wow again! I was feeling like she talks directly about me. I couldn't describe better. About crosswind. Yes, it can be bad for health. You can get cold, specially in summer if you sit in room with nude back..then you can get back pain, ear pain or girls can frost their kidneys and etc. Same in bus. That is the only reason i knew. I never heard about that bad luck. Maybe it is just my lack of information about traditions.
I dont have much personal experience with tje stand offishness of Latvians but my moms whole family is Latvian so........ When I went there when I was 14 with my grandmother I was welcomed with open arms but these were all family members. I did notice that no one really talks to eachother on the tram or on the bus though. The reserved nature is common in Latvian Americans too. Latvian Americans tend to stick to themselves and not mix too much outside the community. That is starting to change with younger henerations though.
If you whistle inside the home then you can invoke the devil inside, if someone intentionally whistles then the devil already standing behind you - Latvian belief. I bet that my aborigines did not tell you that. It is Selonian - Semigallian heritage to their descendants ! Funny how things from third century work here.
+Ulve Rumba I heard only about lack of money if You whistle at home... nothing about devil. But I love sing and whistle...and tell that I am not suspicious. I believe only in explainable things. For example - whistler could be irresponsible, therefore he can't be wealthy enough.
