Brings me back to my college days. I remember walking down the campus in the cold and able to see my warm breath leave me as this song kept my sense warm.

This song was written about the second family who came to Rann Na Feirste to set up home there in the late 1880's. This is a song about Johnny Aoidh 'ac Gairbheith who decided to explore the New World as it was called at the time. The USA, to you and i.
Johnny left for the states and kept in intermittent contact with home in Rann na Feirste, sending letters on his progress and some money to his folks at home.
The letters stopped suddenly after he joined the Montana Gold Rush, and after much searching the final resting place of Johnny Aoidh 'Ac Gairbheith from Rann na Feirste has never been found.
They song was written by Johnny's neighbours the famed Mac Grianna family who need no introduction here.
Patriots, Rebels, Poets, Scholars and Revolutionaries.
    God bless them all.

The translation is a bit off in places. Not herding "swans" (WTF?) but "cattle" = "eallach" (nominative) "eallaigh"
(genetive which follows the present continuous "ag buachailleacht")
