Alright for the Doxies.. The first one climbing OVER the Doggie Gate sums up the tenacity of Dachshunds : determined , focused and sometimes VERY single minded. They WILL usually succeed in any undertaking. The loveable rascals that they are !

If you are going for a soft live and a peaceful life. Never get a dachshund. Sleep? Yeah on their terms, going outside even it it is 2meters/7ft of snow. And you will be cleaning them all the time to prevent ringrowm as they freaking dig everywhere. You also have to brush the teeth all the time as they eat dirt and a nibble can give you tetanus. (same with all burrow dogs). Noone can keep a single dachshund as a soft and cuddly pet. If you decide like i did, realize that the pet will be 20 years old, still as angry at "not-knowns" and bark at them, it is impossible to have a dachshund in an appartment, since he/she would get you evicted. They also have separation anxiaty on levels not seen in other small dogs. Perhaps with a bernard, but not as extreme since a bernard will kill itself.
If you really want a dachshund for anything other than hunting. Make sure you get at least two, females never get along and compete for your gifts and thus is unsable as a pair. If you do not want pups then dual males is the only option if you want well behaved dachshunds.

I like to iterate is is a dog bred for a purpose. They are not pets.
Golden retriever is the "pet" dog by far, it has very low hunting instincts and is very loyal, that is why they make such good dogs for the blind.
