  • During 2006/07 the Glenbrook Vintage Railway voluntary workers/track gang replaced a section of track above Morley Road. My original DVD on this job was 38 minutes long, This shorter version is 14.5 minutes long.

    Great to see the old machines in use many years after they have been made and kept working for what they were intended.

    I often wondered exactly how rail was laid or replaced. This video was very informative and shows how labor intensive and expensive each project is. Great video!

      If you have a look at how the big railways replace track, they have multi million dollar machines to do massive amounts of work. While we are a preservation group of volunteers, we are fortunate with the amount of tools and machinery that we do have. Most groups in New Zealand do not have anywhere near the same amount of equipment. It took us about 18 months to make all the tracksets and transport them from our workshop at Pukeoware to Morley Road, where the job started. We did all of this work over a winter shut down of about five months. Trains started running before we were completely finished but the track was in a usable state. We inspected out entire line about two months ago and in this section of track we found only four sleepers which had rotted out. We will replace these at some stage. The rest of this section is still in excellent condition. The tamping job was particularly good because the top and line is still excellent. All that hard work was well worth it and was highly enjoyable.

    Are they laying heavier rail or changing out the ties? Hard to discern what they are doing other than changing out the already good looking track. Need to add more notice as to what’s going on. From an old track man!

      Hi. I have been involved with this railway for nearly 50 years. This section of track was originally laid in 55lb rail. Even though we had resleepered the section, the rail and sleepers were now past their best. It was decided to take all the old track sets out and replace them with new track sets of 70lb rail on new treated pine sleepers. We spent well over a year making the new track sets before we did the replacement during our winter shut down which was about 5 months.

    great job in narrating the video.

    That doesn't sound like the voice of Horace Treewhacker, Cap't Starlet, Wasp Exponent, and Stirrer Extraordinary, matchless steam starter to the republic of Paerata and serious "only having one" consumer at the Waitemata House Of Debbie. Also famous for being the Phantom Ultralight Christmas Whistle Blower.
    Some good s...t there Rob ;-)

    This is a really well done video, you should be very proud of yourself. Great narration also, not too much chatter and no music, we can hear the sounds of the work in progress, which is music to the ears of a train buff. Will be in NZ South Island in Feb, is that where you are?

    Interesting video, but at 11:56, I noticed that the wagon wheel was not turning, but was being dragged over a highly abrasive surface on the rail. Not good for the wheel and not good for finances if it has to be machined to get rid of a wheel flat.

      @bigkiwimike 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It was common NZR practice to jam a sleeper under the wheels for ballast ploughing.

    No need to lay a track in this state. Just re open closed lines

    What museum did you borrow the crane from? Is this track "cape gauge"? What weight rail?
    Thanks.

      It is a Museum. That and the EMD DA class loco are exhibits normally. 😉 3' 6" Narrow gauge.

      The crane belongs to the railway. We bought it off New Zealand railways back in the early 90’s. The track is 3’6”. The rail that came out was 30’ long lengths of 55lb rail, which the branch was laid with in 1922 and replaced with 42’ long lengths of 70lb rail.

    Look folks - no hard hats, very little hi-viz clothing, no WorkSafe snoops in sight, workers instead using something called Common Sense & Caution. The narrator of this video deserves a higher calling, far better than the theatrical voiceover pros of whom we hear far too much.

      yeah... but you know what the problem with common sense is...

      We don’t wear hard hats or use hiviz vests on this railway, except for level crossing keepers. Some staff do wear hiviz on operating days but we don’t have to. I don’t see the point of them. They do not make you super man nor save you from being an idiot. I never wear them on this railway and I have been involved there for nearly 50 years.

    Good skills but some of those guys are a bit close to the suspended loads

    • @nicknorthable
      @nicknorthable 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, the one guy had himself with a fence behind him with nowhere to go. They also don't seem to be to fond of hardhats either . Safety first for me .

    • @bigkiwimike
      @bigkiwimike 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@nicknorthable I admit some of us might have been a bit close to the load but a hard hat would do nothing if 5 tons of track set fell on you.

    No hard hats, no gloves? These Kiwi's are either dumb as ballast rocks or can bite spikes intwo!

    How is everything in the medical martial law police state of New Zealand? Still no one in / no one out? Adolph Hitler would be considered a libertarian there!
