I recall them relentlessly touring and doing shows in the Northeast U.S. during this period. A formidable live arena band. Heavy guitars but clear loud sound, led by energetic ringmaster and MC Ray.
"Sleepwalker" is the best! I saw the band in the mid-80s I think... they played at a small outdoor venue in Massachusetts (basically, a high school football field) and the crowd went wild! I was pinching myself. Ray, Dave, Mick and all the rest, we love you!
Thanks to "Pickles" for getting the gang together to see them at the Spectrum during their arena era. What a great band, Philly really appreciated them and I've been following and touting them ever since.
Check them out online to see the news of their reunion. Bought my first Kinks album in 1967 and have a roomful of their memorabilia as a hobby so I keep up with any news about them.
Brings back feelings of when I was young, and I'd just go walking at night; it felt otherworldly, and I felt like I at least had a toe in the world of shadows. I knew I could get up to all manner of mischief, and while I never did - I was kind of a boring kid - the possibilities were heady. (The guy in the song sings about breaking into people's houses; that's not at all the sort of thing I had in mind.)
Sleepwalker the sixteenth studio album by the English rock group, The Kinks, was released on February 12, 1977 in the United States, and on February 26, 1977 in the United Kingdom. It marked a return to straight-ahead, self-contained rock songs after several years of concept albums. It is the first album in what critics usually call the "arena rock" phase of the group, in which more commercial and mainstream production techniques would be employed. - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sleepwalker_(The_Kinks_album)
Ev'rybody got problems, buddy. I got mine. When midnight comes around, I start to lose my mind. When the sun puts out the light, I join the creatures of the night, Oh yeah. I'm a sleepwalker. I'm a night stalker. I'm a street walker. I'm a night hawker. Ev'rybody got secrets that they wanna hide. When midnight comes along, I take a look inside. Don't go talkin' in your sleep: I might come in for a peep, Oh yeah.' I'm a sleepwalker. I'm a night stalker. When ev'rybody's fast asleep, I start to creep. Through the shadows of the moonlight, I walk my beat. Better close your window tight: I might come in for a bite, Oh yeah. When the night time comes, I start to creep. I prowl around when you're fast asleep. I walk around on my tippy toes, And I get into places that nobody knows. I'm always around if you wanna meet. You can find me on almost ev'ry street. You'll always get me on the telephone. I'll even come to your home if you're ever alone. I'm a sleepwalker. I'm a night stalker. I'm a street walker. I'm a night hawker. [Repeat]
Happy Birthday Ray Davies born on June 21, 1944. He is an English singer, songwriter and musician. He was the lead singer, rhythm guitarist and main songwriter for the Kinks. - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ray_Davies
I don't think anyone can name a guitar player who played with the hard rock distortion tones before Dave Davies did it...modern rock guitar tones, heavy metal.. Can anyone cite a guitar player who was exhibiting those tones before Dave Davies?
In the late 70s I brought my stereo over to my friend’s house down the road for a keg party. We blasted the “Sleepwalker” album in his backyard with a 1/2 keg of Budweiser. The cops came and told us to turn it down then the party continued.
Happy Birthday today(February 3) to Dave Davies. Cheers! 🥨
indeed
They played this on the radio in Atlanta Ga. when I was 14 ......glad I grew up in the 70s....
Never heard this until today. I didn't realize how much good material the Kinks were putting out at the end of the '70s!
It's my favorite of theirs
look into it. They were better than the MSM tools. Eric Burdon too

Pete Townshend said The Kinks were much more influential than the Stones in England, only second to the Beatles.
I love how their music evolved from 1965 to 1977. So much great, different stuff
Saw them twice in the 70s.
1974 & 79
Both great concerts
Our bass player did a book report on them & got an A
I think this album and this song marked a strong comeback for the Kinks. Real rockin' stuff.

Don Hurshman new album from the kinks? Are they reunited?
What new album they've disbanded decades ago they're not reuniting.
Google them, the brothers are reuniting with drummer Mick Avory and said a new album will be released.
Check them out online to see the news of their reunion. Bought my first Kinks album in 1967 and have a roomful of their memorabilia as a hobby so I keep up with any news about them.
Don Hurshman thanks, great news!
The Old Grey Whistle Test show has the Kinks perform this song. It's great.

Listening to FM radio, in Tampa, sometime in '77... then, this song comes on...

Someone was listening to a lot of Steve Miller Band...
Nah, the Kinks were around long before the Steve Miller Band, and unlike the Steve Miller Band they don't suck.
