  • FUTURAMA TAUGHT ME ABOUT FREE WILL
In this video, we discuss free will and freedom through an episode of Futurama that follows Bender's life alongside Fry and Leela. We delve into classical and quantum physics as well. I focused purely on the philosophical aspects of free will, respecting its religious connotations. Comments and differing opinions are always welcome!

Funny this is a month old I had an enlightened experience and found only with enlightenment do you have true free will. Will always remember this episode because him going to the church was myself reverse engineering my experience and becoming a Metaphysic Christian

I've had this discussion with a friend on multiple occasions. My argument has always been that free will does not exist and cannot because our actions are a result of our personalities (that were formed by our families and the conditions that shaped us as we grew up) reacting to the external stimuli around us. His argument was that free will exists because I can choose to not go into work. I can choose what to wear today. I can choose what to eat. My counter was that not going into work is against my core personality because I grew up in a household below the poverty line and if my dad didn't work, we didn't eat. I associate not working with going hungry. I 'choose' what to wear by picking what's at the top of the stack. I 'choose' to eat based off how tired I am after work.
We usually just go in that circle multiple times. That friend is a smart dude, this is the one discussion we've never reached a consensus on.
Side note: This is also the same friend that I played a word game with. Don't know the name, but you pick a word and whatever your word ends with, their word has to start with.
    Aardvark
    Kabab
    Broccolini
    Inglorious
    Snorlax
    Xerox
    Xenophobe
    etc...
We have literally played this game for 6 hours in a 9 hour shift.
You can alter the rule set to include things like:
You have to be able to spell the word.
    You can only use geography.
    You cannot use proper nouns.
you cannot use words shorter than 5 letters.

and exactly this is the basis of free will, your basis of personal development among the people who live close to you, you are shaped by the way you are created, of course you can deviate from the principles passed on to you but you know they will bring consequence

@@ThinkerToons It seems to me that if free will didnt exist, the concept wouldnt exist. The ability to create concepts from nothing is no different than the ability to create behavior independent from influence.
That in addition to the fact that I have first hand observation of my decision making, while at the same time I cannot perceive every influence that could have possibly lead to my actions.

that person is still making a decision even if it's the decision they were always going to make -
determinism does not mean no free will

@@shr00mhead we do not "create concepts from nothing," it just seems like it

@@orang1921 Theres no reason to believe that. I have first hand observation of concepts being created in my own mind and youre argument relies on pure speculation.

I think free will needs redefining to mean "the perception and belief of one's choices not being determined by prior causes or divine intervention" because there is no hypothesis to prove the existence or not of free will

Just because something is unpredictable doesn't mean that it is under your control. Randomness due to quantum fluctuations is still not under your control though.
