Hi, I’m Frank May of the Great Backyard and I’m here to talk to you about vinyl inground pools and whether or not that offers you the best solution for your swimming needs. So, here we are at my own personal pool. The reason we chose this site is because so many people ask the question, “What kind of pool is that? Is that a gunite pool, is it a vinyl pool, is it a fiberglass pool?” Virtually nobody initially suspects it as being a vinyl pool. It is an illustration of some of the things you can do with vinyl that you were not aware of. So, the first question is, why vinyl and is it a good, long term solution? Well the bottom line is vinyl costs about 30% - 40% less than the next price-point in pool construction with fiberglass. It is about 50 - 60% less than gunite. Now, that is considered on a per gallon base. Then you have to ask the question, well, what is the long-term cost of ownership and I am actually going to be penalizing myself by going vinyl or am I going to be limiting what I want to do by going vinyl? I would say the answer to both of those is actually quite favorable to vinyl if we look at a real analysis of numbers over a long period of time. So, vinyl is going to be cheaper to put in but we all know that a vinyl liner is going to wear out. It is going to have to be replaced. The average cost of a vinyl liner is $2,500-$3,000, that is to resurface the pool. They last anywhere from 8 at the low end to 15 years at the high end but we have seen them go up to 20. They have no color by that point. Generally, before replacing them in the 10th to 15th year of use. So, we’ve got this expense that we’ve got to consider down the road. However, gunite pools have to be resurfaced typically every decade and the cost of the resurfacing gunite can be above $10,000 for a medium sized pool. Fiberglass is a really good option because they typically don’t need to be resurfaced, however, over time, if you have a colored fiberglass shell it will fade and to bring that color back, it is going to have to be sanded and that is going to be an expensive process as well, it is just not going to occur quite as frequently.
So, the bottom line is when we add the numbers up, over a 25-year period, our cost of ownership with vinyl is going to be less considering how much less we put into it at the beginning and including those liner exchanges. This is going to be less than fiberglass and gunite. Another benefit of having vinyl is it can change the look of our pool. When it comes time to put a new liner in, if for any reason if we were unhappy with the liner that we have and If you want a totally different look, we want a different water color, all you have to do is pick a different color liner. This pool right here, we didn’t put a border, we were going for a very different look, it is a black granite liner. It is not a very popular liner but it produces a beautiful pool and a beautiful dark emerald color to the water. So, there are a lot of things we can achieve both in the beginning and over the long run with a vinyl pool that provides us options.
Another question common to vinyl pools is what my limitations are as far as design. Frankly, you can build just about anything out of vinyl. There are some things that can only be built out of concrete. And of course, fiberglass, you are going to buy the pool as it is, and there are no alterations. It comes from a mold that is made around the mold and pulled off the mold and it is put into your yard as it is. The vinyl we can actually make it as big, as skinny or as short as you want it to be. We can make it virtually any shape. So, this pool is an illustration of some options you probably weren’t aware were available with a vinyl pool like full walk-in steps, a tanning ledge and walk-in steps. We can customize the bottom of the pool to achieve anything you want from a diving pool, to a resort bottom pool to a flat bottom pool. These things are incredible versatile.....

This was super helpful. Thank you. My dream is to put in a vinyl liner pool this season (to save $$) and eventually transform it into a NSP using the hole. So, ideally, instead of replacing the liner in 10 years, we will convert to a biofiltration system. God willing.
100% correct information...We build Gunite, and Vinyl liner pools.I would choose Vinyl liner pool over a Gunite pool without hesitation, and I have 3 times(I’ve owned 3 different homes, and installed 3 Vinyl liner pools since I started working in the pool business since 1986)Either way I would never install a fiberglass pool, and have said no to many fiberglass pool manufacturers who have asked me to become a dealer.
Why a hard "no" to fiberglass?
@@cw4091 For starter’s,fiberglass has only started gaining US market share (20-28%)in the last 10-12 years (mainly in warm weather climates(CA,Arizona, and Texas) IMO they have not been around long enough to know how they’re going to hold up. I’ve seen a handful of them *pop up* due to water table issues, and they can also settle if the ground conditions are not ideal. Fiberglass pools do not have hydrostatic release valves in the deep end to relieve ground water pressure(water table and water flowing after torrential rains) This is just my opinion based on what I’ve seen since they’ve started gaining market share, and I have never installed one. I attended a 2 day installation seminar 10 years ago when we were considering taking on a line of fiberglass pools, and I just didn’t feel comfortable with them. Whatever you decide to do,go with a reputable company that has an established location. Whether it’s fiberglass, vinyl or gunite,a reputable, and established pool builder will back up their product.
I love the look of your pool. How is the Black Granite liner holding up and do you still like the color? And is that color still available? Im not seeing it on your website.
I love this video. Very informative. Now please make a video of available different shapes and sizes. 🏊🏼♀️

Great advice and information!! Thank you
How much was your pool? It's very nice.
I hate how fiberglass sellers say that liner pools use more chemicals and they cost 15k a year to maintain I call bullcrap
You no longer sell these types of pool ls on your website what brand pool is this and what is the thickness of this liner ?
In my area, I can’t find any builders that do vinyl inground pools. Everyone I call does either gunite and fiberglass or only above ground pools. Any suggestions to what I can do?
Looks like they stopped doing these pools, their site doesn't list them.,
What type of shock do you use? What is the best shock for this type of pool?
what is the color of the liner you mentioned ?
In the process of installing a vinyl pool. Scared because we have 2 dogs with nails that can poke holes in the liner. 😥
You're only paying upwards of $7500-10k for concrete resurfacing if you're paying a middleman pool company who is subcontracting out the work. I have a 40x20 pool that goes to 9 feet and it's 4-6k tops every 12-15 years.
Hi, I love the tanning shelf. We live in NJ and we are having someone come out for a consultation. He told me over the phone that we could not have a tanning shelf because he wouldn’t recommend putting furniture on the liner. What are your thoughts? Thanks!
Can you tell me what color your vinyl is please?
He said Black Emerald :) I like it too!
