    Great review! I was one of the testers for the prototype of the TL70+, I knew that you would have loved it! 😁
    For the shooting experience and the manual controls it's the best instant camera on the market right now, let's hope they will make a newer version with better metering, mine always underexposes.

    I have had it for a while and really like this camera. I don’t find the light meter to be inaccurate in low contrast situations. It does get fooled into overexposure if part of the scene is brightly lit.

    I just wanted to say thank you so much for this review! I used to own the TL70 and I loved it but unfortunately I had to sell it in 2020 to help pay some bills. I'm now in a better place and was looking to get back into instant film and was hoping to get a camera that could shoot instant square film. This is now definitely at the top of my list.

    We gotta commend mint for working hard to create high quality products like this that might be considered expensive compared to the cheap alternatives from fuji for such a small target audience on a global scale. its a niche market and theyre doing a great job. Im hoping this new point and shoot blows up for them and makes them a household name in the film/instant photography world.

  • @donaldcongdon9095
    @donaldcongdon9095 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    This camera is superb. I've been waiting a LONG time for a decent, fully manual Instax Square camera. When I saw the original TL70 years ago, I mentally said, "They've ALMOST done what I want, but not quite." This camera finally ticks all the boxes for me. I ordered one within five minutes of noticing it on their website. Having done a lot of shooting with it, I can say that there isn't much wrong. Yes, the light meter misses on some scenes, but it's actually quite accurate much of the time. The closeup lens is definitely worth it. Just wish they had put a few parallax correcting marks on the ground glass. Not a big deal, however, since I worked them out and did it myself. The lens is excellent and more than sufficient for the resolution of Instax film. My only criticism is that there are no half-stop increments on the aperture except in the sequence f5.6, f6.7, and f8. You can do +/- half stop around those settings, but that's all. With Instax film's challenging latitude and dynamic range, a few more would have been nice. But at least this camera has a real iris and not just Waterhouse stops. Definitely can recommend this camera if you are willing to take the time to get to know it and really make it perform. It won't disappoint!

    It has been my favorite instant camera to use, followed by Polaroid 180, SLR 680, and Mint RF70. I would say it’s the King of all modern instant cameras.
    The light meter is great, you need to use the spot-metering method. Although instax film is really tricky to use in auto mode with such a camera due to its lack of dynamic range.

    I’m enjoying mine so far through the first cartridge. My complaint is the lens kit also. I’m looking into a little cloth baggie to carry them. The camera seems limited without the ND filters.
    I also don’t like the shutter button. At least on my sample, it leaves a bit to be desired. It doesn’t feel secure and is a bit mushy and the half press is just distinguishable enough to safely not activate the shutter. Having a it threaded for my release cable is a nice touch.
    I don’t do any studio work, so the flash sync port isn’t a problem. For those concerned I imagine a slave trigger could be useful?
    Ben you should have mentioned that it can natively do multi exposure. That shutter will go until you hit the print button. People can get pretty creative there. The bulb and timer shutter options are nice too.

    Being very much enjoying using my Nons with some chungus lenses to take some whacky photos. Need to decide if this is worth getting despite not necessarily adding anything new in the quality sphere but the experience seems to be the main selling point. 700$ is definitely not cheap

    I got this camera and it is a great TLR, but there are a couple of things that can be improved.
    1. The filters , it would be nice if colored filters could be used for black and white shots.
    Or maybe an adapter to use screw on filters.
    2. When using the viewfinder there is a blue square visible in de middle of the screen, this can make it difficult to focus when using the camera during dark situations.
    3. No flash port (I can’t find one,on my camera) so you need to use your external flash in slave mode (this works well I might add).

    • @donaldcongdon9095

    • @InAnInstant
      @InAnInstant  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They are mostly full stops, except at the low end where you have f5.6, f6.7, and f8. If you use f6.7 as your middle, you can over/under expose by half a stop. Above f8, it's all whole stop increments. It IS a real iris, however, and not Waterhouse stops like the original TL70 used.

    As a long time fan of Polaroid cameras, particularly the 180 with its excellent lens and shutter, in a moment of optimism I purchased a Mint RF70 but after limited and disappointing use I sold it. It was pretty good mechanically with a so-so lens but it was (and any Mint or other instant camera is) limited by the Fuji film. It has limited dynamic range, poor quality colour rendering and terrible definition. With careful lighting and other controls it can produce a somewhat cool soft image, especially in B&W, that has a certain nostalgia attraction but that novelty fades pretty quickly. Even though the old Fuji pack film was good it couldn't come near the quality of Polaroid. I loved the 105 print/negative B&W film. a nice print and a great large negative. Sadly not only all the Polaroid processes & equipment were destroyed, the firms that supplied the chemicals/materials went out of business.There will never be enough market demand for anyone to invest in that quality film again, even if it were possible. Most of the fun/thrill of instant film has been replaced by digital cameras - what remains is a fun fad - so the instant product will always be an expensive mediocre retro luxury.

  • @geelove76
    @geelove76 ปีที่แล้ว

    The camera looks great & Mint makes amazing products. Now if Fuji can create a solid enough instant film to justify a $700 camera. Instax film is good for snapshots but is it worth buying that expensive of a camera to shoot it? (Edit: I do shoot Instax wide on a Wista 45SP & get decent shots but because of the narrow dynamic range of the film, it’s pretty hit or miss)

    I own the original TL70, and I gotta say it takes some of the absolute worst photos of any instant camera I own.
    The shutter is too slow to be used outdoors for a film as fast as instax, the optional lens filter you can get to step down the exposure is very hit or miss, and it can't be combined with the shroud that limits lens flares. The build quality is very plastic and poor. I regret paying for it. I can't imagine the TL70+ being any better...
    I just read on their website that the TL70+ also has a 1/500 shutter and f22 aperture which is pathetic when shooting outdoors in the summer when your only option is ISO 800 film.

      The TL70 plus is a MUCH refined camera compared to the TL70. The lens is good. The metering is better. Yes, you still need the ND filters, but they extend the range well enough for bright sunlight. The aperture is a real iris, not Waterhouse stops. Focusing is bright and easy. Glad I didn't buy the original TL70 and waited until the third generation for them to get it right.

    No way they want almost 400 dollars for a instant tlr that doesn't even take that good of pictures, especially because it was so glorified in this video

    This camera price is insane. For less than half that price you can get a mamiya c220 and shoot actual medium format

      What's the point if you want to shoot instant film?

    • @SilveradoNomads
      @SilveradoNomads ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @tomjanowski8584 If you want to, that's fine, I'm just saying that you can get higher quality images for less than half the price. Plus, in a variety of different color pallettes.
      Instant or not, this thing is super over priced. I can see this being half the price. Especially considering the light meter is supposedly inaccurate. 700 bucks for a bad light meter and film with bad dynamic range? Sign me up

      @@SilveradoNomads I assume it is pretty pointless to make your comment here. 1. This is about an instant camera and I already have a film TLR. 2. I have 15 vintage cameras, none have a built in light meter, so an inaccurate meter is something I wouldn't use anyway. 3. People don't need advice from you about what type of camera or film they need to be using.

      I didn't know I could get a brand new Mamiya C220 for that price.

    • @SilveradoNomads

      @tomjanowski8584 Nor do they need advice from you about maintaining the overpriced status quo.
      Look, if you like the camera, cool. Have at it.
      When you look at the package as a whole, it isn't good.
      I compared it to a real medium format for a reason. This whole camera package is ridiculous. Then consider the price of instant film on top of this price tag.
      Also, the point of meter statement is to say, if I'm paying 700 bucks for something that includes certain items.. and one of the items doesn't work properly.. wouldn't that be annoying?
      Nah, we will just blindly defend it because my other cameras don't have one. That makes sense.

    Odd how the price never made it into the cons section. This mofo will set you back to say the least.

      Haha well saying the camera being expensive is a con is like saying it’s a con that the sky is blue. It’s not like there’s an alternative

    • @sando5943
      @sando5943 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If there was a less expensive option it would definitely be a con. I'm kinda shocked how low they have got it from a small company. It's still way below most digital camreas, despite those being produced a scale
