Hi, I have done the trip in good weather, but it does seen to rain a lot on the West Coast, making conversation to a waitress in Fox Glacier is said "its always seems to be raining when I visit Fox", to which she replied "that's why we have temperate rain forest here". The rain doesn't detract from the wonderful scenery, it just adds atmosphere, although it would be nice not to be looking past windscreen wipers ...... Tim.
nice scenery...a bit disconcerting to see that culvert washed away and rails with no support just after where the workmen were...and another hole shortly afterward...and yet another one a bit further on...must have had trouble with flooding....and an even bigger one further on..and others further on..in UK would have shut the line down....the gaol bars ruined it after that...
New Zealand is stunningly beautiful, it also rains a lot and the rabbits love to burrow under the track formation. It is over 200 years since Europeans started to settle there but it still feels like a wild west frontier country. The West Coast is covered with temperate rainforest, covering the whole line without being caught in a rain storm is a rare experience.
Hi I am glad you enjoyed the video, unfortunately it always seems to rain when I visit the West Coast of New Zealand, that is why it is covered in temperate rain forest. The wipers do look a bit strange, hopefully I will make the trip in glorious sunshine one day.
Timsvideochannel1 Well, the northwest coast of the US is the same way. Up to 2 meters of rain a year and coastal rain forest. I live on the edge of a lava desert several hundred km inland, Rather cold in winter with temperatures below freezing for 4 months or more.
Wow that's cold. I live in the UK where talking about the weather is a national pass-time, but then it is not uncommon to have all four seasons in one day. Are you able to enjoy the cold weather with skiing and other winter sports where you are, or is it just cold for four months?
Timsvideochannel1 There are several ski areas within an easy drive of Idaho Falls. Sun Valley is the oldest, about 2 hours southwest. It was originally established by the Union Pacific Railroad to promote travel on their passenger train between Salt Lake City, Utah and Portland, Oregon. Now the tracks to the ski area are gone, but the resort is still there. Yellowstone Park is 2-3 hours north, depending on the weather. They have snowcoach and snowmobile tours into the park in winter. We get up to a meter of snow in town, and more on the hills to the east. Snowmobiles are a common sight in the hills in winter.
It sounds like a great area to live for winter sports lovers. I caught the Canadian across Canada in January, the scenery was stunning, I am guessing similar to where you live in winter. I love to see snow here in the UK, but it only happens about every three years, so when it does happen it causes chaos because we don't have the equipment to deal with it and my local trains take power from a third rail, so the snow just freezes to it and the trains don't run for a week.
Hi, thank you for commenting. I have posted a lot of this video at regular speed..... hrer is the link..... Part 3 - New TranzAlpine 2014 - Pass under the Southern Alps on our way to Greymouth. .....Tim.
Interesting wiper effect at the end (it does rain a lot down there). An interesting choice of electronic keyboard music too. Titling stops on the way in both parts woud have been a nice touch.
Hi, there is a saying in Glasgow (Scotland) "if it's not raining, it's about to start raining", this saying could well apply to the West Coast of New Zealand's South Island, but it has to be remembered it's the climate that makes it such a beautiful place. Although I have not included titles with this version, I have uploaded the full trip in three parts, showing side views as well with captions. Thanks for the feedback, it helps in making future videos.
Hi, these videos contain driver's eye views of the route in real time - th-cam.com/video/UfSwriY3qBA/w-d-xo.html th-cam.com/video/GxIjoeD0rgw/w-d-xo.html th-cam.com/video/P-87UGQeK2E/w-d-xo.html
There are a couple of good museums nearby. Most people left the train to continue by coach along the West Coast to Fox Glacier, with a few like myself finding somewhere for a bite to eat before joining the train for the return journey.
Another great video! I'd love to visit New Zealand one day.
Hello Henry, it's long flight, but I think you'll love it when you get there. I hope you make it one day.
Wow = that brings back memories. thanks for posting.
I hope it bought back good memories, I did it again earlier this year, it is still amazing.
Just railfanning on different videos. Neat effect with the rain and wipers on high speed. Made me feel I was watching a scratchy old 16mm film.
Great vid and so much better when you actually know the route. Mighty yet benevolent engineers those beautiful rivers. Thanks
Hi, I'm glad you enjoyed watching It. it's among my favorite train rides, deserving it's rating as one of the world's great train journeys.

The music used is listed at the end of the video and it is available today as part of “Pinnacle Studio” video editing software.

The windscreen wipers looked a bit strange at that video speed. A very enjoyable vid, Tim. Thank you.

them window wipers tho.
Nice. It would've been better at regular speed, though. Less herky-jerky.

The only reason to visit greymouth lol. Such a desolate town with nothing happening. At least the trip there is good!
