The memory that first springs to mind when I think of the Tuscan S was one from back in 2010, when we had all of the snow. Snowing heavily, a land rover just went off the road and smashed some traffic lights, and along comes a dude in a Tuscan S, looking absolutely content with his choice in vehicle that day.
I'm honestly not sure how he managed to fit his gigantic testicles in the car, too.

R400TVR Firstly I disagree with your statement "narrow tyres" when talking of TVRs. I have driven both my Griffith 500 and my 3000M in the snow - about 1" of fresh snow on a previously dry road. 30 mph was stupidly fast, overtaken by Micras and Citroen CXs. Even in the wet it is best to keep it below 60mph if there is any chance of standing water as it aquaplanes very well! All this on new(ish) tyres.

I owned one of these in the late 2000's back in Northern Ireland (I have been in the Middle East of the past 11 years now). It was my weekend car (and fitted into my garage along with a BMW 730d, Mercedes SL 55 AMG and a BMW m535d) but frequently was my daily driver due to the addiction that I developed for it. Amazing vehicle - the only car that ever managed to spin the back wheels in 5th gear under acceleration. No traction control; no ABS - just me and the car. Mine had the Red Rose conversion that cured many of the engine issues and was trouble-free for the 4 years I owned it. The exhaust could fire off every vehicle alarm in the underground car park of Victoria Square in Belfast if you revved it at the right time in the right place. Would love another one.

Good review. I owned a Tuscan S a few years ago and now a Tuscan 2S. They are incredible fun - on a different level to anything modern in terms of involvement and sensory overload. I know true petrol heads/good drivers who are afraid to drive a tvr and play it safe with digital, turbocharged, traction controlled yawn boxes. In fact a sorted Tuscan is easy to drive. Upgrade the suspension to nitrons and have them properly set up. Ditch the 18” spider alloys (wrong offset despite being oem!) and buy something like a 19” Jade R which is actually lighter and cures the tramlining. Then (in the case of the S) just learn to exploit the ‘Hydratrack’ rear diff. You’ll find you can really drive it quickly (yes, Lotus/Noble quickly). Agree with the Viper analogy - there’s not really anything else on the planet like them. Even the noble m400 I owned between the Tuscans wasn’t half the fun of either.

I have a different opinion than you on yawn boxes. my friend owned a brand new Tuscan S and was shit scared to use it in the wet.
i owned 2 Golf R (yawn boxes) the second one. stage 2 tuned. i loved driving that car. the tune takes away the computer im in control mode
and turns it much more savage. so i could thrash the thing in the wet without killing myself. to me that's not boring thats progress!,

    • @niallmcmahon8748
      @niallmcmahon8748 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@MrRonan3 You're right - sometimes a sufficient increase in power can wake a car up. Even something like an r34 skyline is pretty dull until you mod it beyond 400bhp. If your R is a manual then even better. It's still a hatchback though - try a ground-up rwd sports car and you will feel the difference. Centre of gravity, nimble responses, etc. Extra power only compensates so far.

Love the Tuscan S. This and the ~'02 Cerbera 4.5 are probably my favorite TVRs. My university thesis was actually a case study of TVR's financial woes and challenges around the time of the Wheeler/Smolenski transition. I actually talked to the factory a couple of times and ended up having to dig through and mail-request information from some clearing house to get any kind of financials given it is/was a privately held company. It was an entertaining process and I came out of it a fan of a car that I'll probably never own being in the 'States.

I bought my MX5 from Hexham Horseless Carriages, in - ahem - Hexham. Mainly sell TVRs and, from some of the raucous sounds emerging from the workshop, they know how to fettle the motors. The kind of sound that sends a tingling sensation down the back of your neck. A tingle that is not too a distant relative of fear. Great!

I've had the pleasure of driving one of these on a track day. Unfortunately the conditions that day were less than favourable and a boat would have been far more appropriate.
Despite the weather, I can hand on heart say that I loved that car so much, I really wanted to take it home with me.
Even in the pouring rain, it was surprisingly nice to drive, if not a little scary and the long throttle pedal travel proved to be incredibly useful for taming the power from that beautiful engine.
The gear change was somewhat heavy, but swapping cogs was still a joy. The change was lovely.

@Sunamer Z They definitely lack the rumble of the V8 models. But the exhaust note crisps up and howls when you take it up the revs in a way a V8 car can't. Horses for courses. The Tuscan really needs to be driven hard to make sense, something like a Chimaera is lovely to burble around in (as well as being savage when you want to go quickly).

Sounds great. TVR Speed 6 and BMW S54 3.2 engines probably the two best straight sixes ever made. Only only have the later at present.

I put a deposit down for one at Early's court Motor show. Ordered the two-tone green/purple, same as the car in SwordFish film. Never bought it, after looking at the depreciation and problems reported with parts, service i pulled out. Also depreciation on the Boxster was massive so just kept that. Watching this video i wish i had bought it.

Much prefer the straight piped 4.2 cerbra sound , had mine back to the Blackpool factory twice and I have nothing but praise for the guys their, lent me a Tuscan for 2hrs to have a blast while having new ap racing brakes upgraded , sad to see its demise after it was sold , a lot of nice stories in TVR ownership 👍

Reading all these comments about how difficult and dangerous a Tuscan is to drive, well I bought a Tuscan as my first entry into TVR and I loved it. Drive sensibly and be careful in the wet but I would do that in any car and they are a delight. I came from a motorbike background and I feel that certainly helped but people are so used to just pressing the accelerator and letting the car do all the work and the driver thinks he is Lewis Hamilton. Your not driving the modern car, its doing most of the work. If you can drive a Tuscan and there is no reason you can't they are hugely more rewarding than today's yawn boxes. I now drive a TVR 4.5 litre Cerbera for fun and a Audi A6 for everday motorway driving. The Cerbera is miles, miles more fun than my 3.0L Audi.

I am on my third TVR firstly a Tuscan, then a Cerbera Speed 6 and now a Cerbera 4.5 V8. tried a few similar priced things in between but nothing comes close to the thrill of a TVR.

Took a Tamora for a drive in 2004. Bonkers looks. Mental noise. Floored it once and all my chest hair instantly migrated to my back!
Did not like being driven at low revs so the gearbox had to be worked to stay in the correct rev band. Surprisingly comfy when cruising around a B road.
Came across a car you should probably not drive is sick, tired or angry. Could not get out because the button to open the door is situated on the central console, obviously!
Recently checked the prices (2023). Exact same prices than they were sold at second hand back in 2003... They haven't lost any value.
    Still want one.

I think that the repeated gruff bark on the heel-and-toe downshift, as heard from inside the cockpit, is more representative of the driving experience in a Tuscan than the incredible metallic scream from the pipes. The latter can only be enjoyed sparingly, in suitable conditions and with an appropriate level of confidence regarding the current balance of the "OH SHIT" fund. But that wonderful growly crackly bark could be enjoyed again and again and again and again....

I had a pretty reliable TVR 420 SEAC before I ordered a Red Rose spec Tuscan at the 1999 Motor Show. Took delivery at the factory on 1st March 2001. Very sharp handling at the front end, while the back end would compress on fast corners then suddenly spring back up at random moments. Acceleration and braking in the dry was excellent. In the wet it was all over the place.
Three engine rebuilds in 12,000 miles and many other technical problems, plus rapid depreciation ended my ten-year love affair with TVR. No matter what your heart says, don't do it.
