    My husband broke a toe in Las Terrenas. We were on vacation and we used US insurance. We went o private hospital. The doctor did surgery, the doctor was great. Very decent service! My husband was very happy.

    Jay, I’ve always said, that when my time on this earth is up, I don’t want to have any regrets. The decisions that I make as I get older are well thought out and practical. I guess that comes with maturity. I cherish the real friends in my circle, and never let the haters get under my skin. At the end of the day, I’m still winning, and that’s all that matters.

    You said it James. If you live in the . Dominican Republic as an expat. You need to have a support system, this is very crucial. You need it for everyday little things; and for serious situations just like what you’ve been through. Brother you and your wife have a lot of support out here. It’s just a blessing every thing was ok with you. Another good video James 👍👍👍👍

    I vacation in Dominican Republic sometimes with other couples. On a private trip to Sanoa Island one of the ladies hurt her big toe nail badly. Guy I always book with for transportation and excursions (German Dude)….. He sent a Female Dominican Doctor to completely take care of the situation. I don’t remember the cost? Like 200 bucks comes to mind. I was impressed. I was impressed on Sanoa island as some guy in camouflage (military) 🏍️ed her away to get badged up on the island at no cost. She wasn’t 5’10 blond 135lbs….. She is larger. It was funny seeing her on the motorcycle with some young good looking man in camouflage, 😂. What a memorable experience!
    I was cool with 20 percent tips and using the same people as always, they hooked us up. I thought it was really cool they sent a Doctor out to us. Dominicans are good people

    I agree are used to hear the benefits of having travel insurance because you never know what can happen. Yeah there’s nothing wrong with living in the area that can be a different state or country with no family but you have to find people that you can count on for emergencies. I lived outside of Orlando with no relatives but my parents and little brother.

    I was living and working in the DR, Sosua from 97-99 and was attacked in the campo house while asleep in bed in Oct. 98. 30 stitches on top of my head and a 12 inch metal pin in my right leg. I had a support system and someone was able to make arrangements to pay my bill before my wife was able to get on a plan and get there. We paid cash and I was able to submit in to my insurance in the US and was reimbursed.

      Well if you can't say whether it was a public or private hospitalthen you're don't have the correct information and should have kept it to yourself and not pass judgement on the country. Yeah it's my experience but I'm putting out facts, you're assuming. That's pushing narrative and I stand by it.

    Hey Jay, thanks for both videos, as always it's all good! One of my friends decided to get involved in Airbnb in Santo Domingo so he's doing some work on his spot when he comes to visit. I told him to get dominican insurance so that if he had an accident while driving or fell off a ladder and broke something that he would be guaranteed hospital care. It just makes sense. I got my insurance thru Mapfre, it's a really good plan and rivals the plan I have in my country. My time is spent on the Norrh Coast and my agent is there aa well, she gave me a tout of all the facilities in sosua and Cabarete and took me to Puerto Plata so that I could meet the Mapfre agents, they were great people to talk to and they are easy any time I need them. One small difference though, I'm so old I had to pay the premium for the year... All good though, I'm covered. Thanks again Jay and buena salud to you and yours. Stay up brother!

    I'm Dominican, and yes, if you go to a public hospital (where the servive is not great) they'll take care of you for free. That's why Haitian women cross the border illegally to give birth; they don't have to pay and doctors aren't allowed to ask for documents to take care of you. 🤷🏻

    Glad to see you doing well. It's like a private university in which you have to pay but in public schools, colleges or a public university you even get two meals plus a snack every day for as long as you have to stay in any of those different faculties without having to pay anything. Don't forget to thank the President. No private business would survive if they would not charge for their businesses. In such cases people would only have public hospitals. Unfortunate that's reality. You see my family knows all the addresses of all the public hospitals of each province. Including the one in construction as a preventive measure. The government just inaugurated one (-good one-) in Sajoma. You see some people when they have too many PRESIDENTE forget that there is a difference between private and public. I'm just saying. Some people think that if you break a finger you must get to the closest of the two but you must remember that if you don't have enough fingers to be able to count the money that the private clinic requires from you then the clinic should have been the second choice. Good health to everyone

      Exactly, they would not survive if they don't receive a payment for their services, it's not like the public ones that they will always receive money from the government even though they aren't even efficient. I would like to add that they are verry necessary cuz the public ones cannot cover all the demand, if they didn't exist, the system would be collapsed. So, thank you private clinics 👍

    SMART TRAVELER WILL GET Travel insurance for financial cover for many eventualities and situations that you might encounter when abroad. This can include medical expenses (paying for medical treatment whilst you are abroad) medical repatriation (returning you to your home country).
    Also, Private Hospitals can ask for a DEPOSIT in DR! WHY? Answer this yourself, if you are not Dominican or Legally Live in DR, who will pay for any treatment??? Simple.
    In the USA, you go to a hospital and even if you don't have insurance they need to treat you? Well this is why, You will get a Bill, you will need to pay our get push to Bankruptcy!

    Well,our health system works really good but people needs to understand when traveling overseas you gotta have a medical insurance that got you covered worldwide for your own safety regardless if you get treated with or without it.

    Dominican Republic is not the USA I don’t know why people compare . My husband says the firefighters are not paid there and the ambulances and 911 is definitely not the same. People have to take all these things in consideration when moving there!!! I don’t know why people lose their common sense when it comes to moving abroad smh. I thought the tip that you gave about having a support system is a key point

    A public hospital is the worse idea ever. They're overrun and have no supplies, so if you need Ti screws for the leg you'll need to provide them.

    • @JayAbroad
      @JayAbroad  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      This is true. That's why I mentioned it should be the last resort especially for medical emergencies.

    • @Andrew-hk4dh
      @Andrew-hk4dh 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Well, that happens a lot, especially in the countryside, but the bigger hospitals usually have enough supplies (at least for emergencies), especially the semi-private ones (de autogestion) when they are well administrated.

    US Veterans can use Tricare SOS. (Pay a small monthly premium) You have to pay upfront at clinic. Then you have to apply for reimbursement if copay is exceeded online. It can tke some time even if the forms are correct. Veterans can also get treatment covered from VA approved clinics. But it has to be service related problem that is approved by the VA. Yup agree if you live out there get local insurance.

      @@TheJoeyboots good info. I did not know about using Tricare. Colombia also offers VA clinics in two locations in the country where you can receive treatment for service-connected conditions only for reimbursement.
