How is an employer, whether the government or a private company, allowed to not pay its employees, particularly those that are being made to work regardless of not getting paid, eg air traffic controllers, border security etc. Also if there is some good reason why the government is permitted to not pay its employees for a protracted amount of time (and I haven't yet heard of one) why aren't there measures in place to prevent those workers from suffering financial hardship while they go unpaid. Don't they have financial commitments eg mortgages, rent and the like that have to be paid? Are there arrangements that say these government employees don't have to worry about paying rent or buying food while they are not getting paid? It doesn't seem sensible to me.
