I was working in radio in 2003 when Guy won Australian Idol. They had a song called Angels Brought Me Here ready for the winner. It came down to Guy and Shannon Noll (who sounds a lot like Jimmy Barnes). Both singers recorded the winners song and they printed CD singles of both versions for the radio stations to be ready on announcement of the winner. No one knew in advance, so radio stations made two versions of the promotional promos so they were ready no matter the outcome. It was my job to produce the montages for each contestant ready for the announcement. I still have the montage I made for Guy's win.
When we look back on this first series of Idol, there was an incredible field of singers. I was surprised that Guy's competition was Shannon Noll. Paulini, Cosima were light years ahead. Shannon Noll just didn't have the range. I see previous suggestions that you find Guy in this competition singing Climb Every Mountain. As others have stated, this performance went a long way towards Guy winning.
I love your enthusiasm for our Aussie artists Nick. This was the first ever Idol in Australia. It was very gruelling on their voices. Guy had a real heavy cold but even so he always gave it his best and never let us down. I pray you do part 2 for us....I loved 'Hit The Road Jack' ....'When Doves Cry' and Climb Every Mountain which is in part 3. I believe this was what won it for Guy.....
I get even more teary listening to our Aussie greats because of your reviews. Your childlike excitement is priceless and means so much to me. So great seeing Americans, especially black singers, appreciating ours. I say this with HUGE respect, because in my opinion, for some reason, black singers just know how to use their voices in ways white one don't... Until they hear you first.
The woman with the beautiful voice is Paulini Curuenavuli, originally from Fiji and also a gospel singer. She is another voice you have to listen to! I watched her and Guy live. She is a phenomenal vocalist as well. 🙌🏽
Marcia Hines the judge you see on the panel is one of Australia’s premier female artists with many hits, her I just don’t know what to do with myself a favourite and she has a duet with Jimmy Barnes as well called Fire and Rain.
I remember the finals that year. Guy had a really heavy cold in the last couple of finals and his voice was in danger but he battled through and eventually won the competition. Fabulous.
I had the biggest crush on Guy 🤣 I was in year 12. I voted for him so many times haha The finale was broadcast on my formal night so I couldn't watch it live. I was devastated 🤣🤣🤣
Oh God, he was sooooo young. He had some stiff competition on this show, but he was always going to win. Every show he would pull out something unexpected, make it his, and knock it out of the park. I hope you watch the rest of it.
saw him last night, he is absolutely incredible!!! No words will ever be able to explain his generosity!, He held the concert 15 minutes so people wouldn't miss seeing him perform because of traffic.... He's phenomenal
So pleased to know you have discovered what and who has been my healing potion for the past couple of decades, our hidden Gem & Australian best - Guy Sebastian ❤❤❤❤❤
Ohhhhhhhhh! I still have Guy's original Australian Idol winners single. I went to see him in concert and was blown away. As a singer myself, I don't know if you feel this way or if this happens to you Nick but it always makes me become emotional when I hear a singer sound so beautiful. I cried so many times during the concert. I met him afterwards and he was so genuine and, after my mate told him I was a rock singer, he asked me to sing for him so I did. He gave me a hug and said 'God bless you Shazzy, keepin rock alive, that was amazing' and, like a big sooky, I cried.
Guy won the Australian Idol in 2003 ( at 16 years old ), and is now 40 years old and became a judge/ coach in 2019 on the show! Many, many awards and he has sang here in America. What a phenomenal talent and we’re just been hearing about him in America for the last several years or so ? Have we been living under a rock or something ? 😉😂☺️
He sang at my church! I got the youth group's album signed by all of the band and then a few weeks later there he is on TV!!! Made my year😁 He's just as sweet and humble as he was then, too.
The judge Ian Dickson (Dicko) was a very blunt judge but he was the General Manager of marketing for Sony BMG Australia so had a roll. I guess he was the Simon Cowell type. Marcia Hines came out from the USA as a single young mum and became a highly successful singer and Mark Holden was also a singer from way back. This was 2003 the first Australian Idol
i remember watching his audition on TV back then. this smiley kid with a fantastic fro walks in and announces he's going to sing Stevie. i thought, "are you now? cause if you can sing Stevie, properly, then you can win this whole thing kid." then this happened. i knew he'd win it there and then. EDIT, btw, if youre looking for another Farnsie song to react to, my favorite has always been "that's freedom". people say the Australian national anthem should be you're the voice, but it's a war protest song. thats freedom is a true "anthem" and imo it should be the Aussie national anthem.
Omg that's freedom gives me goosebumps every time I listen to it. It would be awesome as an anthem. John Farnham is literally one of the best make artists anywhere. I listened to him all through my teens and twenties. There's not too many people that have the stage presence and vocal ability he has. Also a huge fan of Guy Sebastian, seen him in concert in my city and he's another artist that is just vocally gifted beyond words.
I remember watching this first season of Idol, it was brilliant! You should watch the performances of the singer who came second place aswell, his name is Shannon Noll and he reminded everyone of Jimmy Barnes, a LOT! So I think you would really enjoy his clips! These live shows where they chose what songs to sing, Guy took it 1 step further and he actually created all the remixes for the songs he ended up performing, so they do have that different flair. We could all tell he just had that something extra special about him that was going to take him far!
You remember when they li ed up a meeting/mentoring session WITH Barnesy for the show? Then they got to go to the Grammies where they saw Farnesy perform from front row?! They were the luckiest group, best season by far since it was also the first!
Whoo hoo..😃.watched all these shows and fell in love with Guys voice. Going to his concert next month.🙆♀️. postponed from last year😥but finally happening👍👍
I went to high school down the road from the church where Guy sang and also near the high school where he did vocal coaching. Needless to say there was a big wave of love gor Guy among the different school in Adelaide's North Eastern suburbs.
I absolutely love the look on your face when you realised he was about to sing You’re The Voice. Like it was Christmas. The Aussie classics got you good! 🤩
The female judge is Marcia Hines who came to Australia from the USA when she was 16 to perform is Jesus Christ Super Star and was an huge star here...you might like to check out some of her songs too
Part 2 would be good to hear. He does When Doves Cry, When I Get You Alone, I'll Be There, Crazy in Love, Climb Every Mountain..... Such great memories to see it again.
I love Guy and he has a fabulous voice, but when he sang You’re The Voice, I realised just how much this song is John’s. Guy doesn’t have the depth of tone here, but of course he has grown into his own and is just a superb performer now with some killer songs. Delta has a version of You’re The Voice that you might be interested in hearing. She does a good job, but that song is iconic because of the tone John brings to the words. Aren’t we lucky in Aus to have such wonderful talents?
So Marcia Hines you see react so amazingly is an African American woman who came in the 70’s and had the lead role in ‘hair’ and then stayed here and released music and became the ‘Queen of Pop’, that was literally her title. She was so embraced by the Australia public. So she saw talent when she saw it. Also her daughter Deni became an amazing Australian artist in the 90’s, look her up. Both so loved here ❤
If I Remember Correctly , His Grand Final Performance of a Song named - When Angels Brought Me Here ! Was a awesome rendition and truely worthy of his title of The Australian Idol 2003 !!
Just found you, mate thank you for doing this, to be honest we don't get enough of it here, you appreciation for our Musical Talent is astounding, you have re lighted my soul. Johnny Farnham, Jimmy, Tina Arena, you range of our music old and new is amazing, thank you from Bowen Nth Queensland.
Check out Guy singing Climb every mountain during his Australian Idol run. It was incredible, he went into win the first Aust. idol. He's our Kelly Clarkson.
Guy's girlfriend was the blonde in the audience and the one he grasped hands with. They have been together since mid teens and decided to be each others "one and only" partners. Jules, they got married, they have 2 kids and are still together till this day.
Hey Brus👋 , Enjoying your Reactions to the Australian Artists that you have listened too , Hope you experience more Aussie Artist's to come in the near future Nick .👍👏👏 Awesome Work Mate !
You commented on his age at the beginning, he was 21 when he auditioned for idol, and he just had his 40th birthday last week on the 26th of October. :)
Truly deeply love both singers ... have been a fan of John before he was rightly popular ... but !!! ... they are both very different singers and absolute masters of their own genres !!!!!!
You gave it away at the beginning with the J. Brooks instagram - I'm so grateful to Jazza for supporting you on here and suggesting great Australian talent. Just so you know, you really need to check Jazza out, he's an Australian legend in his own right! His main TH-cam channel has 5.7M followers - that's where he does all his arty things, and he has numerous other social media channels on all sorts of platforms too! One of his other channels is his music channel where you get to see him sing, play a huge range of instruments, and just be amazing; it's a pity he hasn't uploaded in several years. My favourite song he's done is a version of Hey Ya by Outkast, but very different; the video is at watch?v=Np8ZkIQNKms and should be checked out.
Guy went into the journey a very strong Christian & people were so excited to have a chance at representation that everyone I knew was messaging their friends the numbers to vote for him even if they didn't watch the show or were grandma's. So a lot of people were pretty crushed & stopped supporting him 2? 3? years after he'd won & left for the US that he didn't want anything to do with God. Like anyone I'm sure he was just on his journey. He's an incredible artist but he had a lot of weight on his shoulder too.
When you called the phone number you would hear a recorded message from Guy thanking you for voting for him. He sounded so nice in that message. I said "my pleasure, dude" to the recorded message.
I don't know if you've ever heard of Eurovision, but it's a massive singing competition in Europe and he represented Australia in 2015. You should check that out...I think he came fifth in Australia's first time competing. He also competed in World idol and I think he came 2nd in that one.
20yrs ago he could sing this great, now his vocal ability is off the planet
Oh he won, in arguably the most talented and competitive line up the show ever saw 😎🤘🔥
Duuude there were some top notch singers in that first season
“He looked crap”. Meh. Wait til you hear what this judge, Dicko, said about Paulini.
Great song that one 🤙🏼🍻
Incredible! What a cool job
@@monique8641totally agree with you. Shannon is not in their league. Their vocals are superb in comparison
I voted for him the whole time on Australian idol 🥰🥰 and I cried when he won 😁😁
Guy was 22 here, 2003 and he just turned 40 October 26th. He won and became Australia's first Idol and the rest is history.
I love your enthusiasm for our Aussie artists Nick. This was the first ever Idol in Australia. It was very gruelling on their voices. Guy had a real heavy cold but even so he always gave it his best and never let us down. I pray you do part 2 for us....I loved 'Hit The Road Jack' ....'When Doves Cry'
and Climb Every Mountain which is in part 3. I believe this was what won it for Guy.....
So so much talent in that first series of Australian idol.
Back then it was purely about the talent.
Now
You have to watch part 2. He won off the back of climb every mountain. Unique
Amen - that's the song I was looking for!
YES! I only just watched it again not that long ago. Definitely his most memorable performance!
Yes, that's when he arrived. It was incredible.
I always remember this, his first audition because I was like, WOW! So bloody beautiful!! And hoping he would win the competition, and he did!! 😊
I came here to tell him who she is too. 🙌🏼
Phenomenal voice, and he has always been such a genuinely nice and humble person.
Marcia Hines the judge you see on the panel is one of Australia’s premier female artists with many hits, her I just don’t know what to do with myself a favourite and she has a duet with Jimmy Barnes as well called Fire and Rain.
I'm gunna have to search that out. I really like the James Taylor version but I'm looking forward to hearing Marcia & Barnsey together
I remember the finals that year. Guy had a really heavy cold in the last couple of finals and his voice was in danger but he battled through and eventually won the competition. Fabulous.
He had the dance moves, still does… that’s part of the reason he won… complete performer 💖
Yes - Guy won the first season of Australian Idol in 2003.
Yes he did but I have to say I voted for Shannon noll many many times lol
I had the biggest crush on Guy 🤣 I was in year 12. I voted for him so many times haha The finale was broadcast on my formal night so I couldn't watch it live. I was devastated 🤣🤣🤣
The talent pool in that first series was and remains truly outstanding.
and even after many seasons after that Guy is still the best artist to come out of that show
I voted for the other guy
That was Paulini . She is incredible. So is Cosmia De Vito. This was the first and definitely the best Australian Idol season we had.
Yesss Paulini* and Cosima were among my favourites 🖤
Omg Paulini Angel Eyes is one of my all time favs
I love Guy Sebastian
Thank you ifogot how wonderful he is
This is why he won. Grew up singing gospel in church . Whole range of music talent here
Oh God, he was sooooo young. He had some stiff competition on this show, but he was always going to win. Every show he would pull out something unexpected, make it his, and knock it out of the park. I hope you watch the rest of it.
The judge ate his words when Guy won the whole dang show! 🥳⭐
Guy is amazing , seeing him next month live . He is sublime and sounds exactly same live . He has a great sense of humour too .
saw him last night, he is absolutely incredible!!!

This takes me back, I loved his journey on Australian Idol.
I love how happy you are watching Guy. He just lights people up. ✨
This season had abundance of quality singers. Some great artist in this season
Finally found your name...hello NICK !Nick, I hear a dam good singing voice in you ,luv listening to you Nick and your sister is so so great to !
Battle Scars is my absolute favourite. The first season of Australian Idol was the best one period.
He sang at my church! I got the youth group's album signed by all of the band and then a few weeks later there he is on TV!!! Made my year😁 He's just as sweet and humble as he was then, too.
You should listen to Marcia Hines. She had a string of hits including From The Inside, You, and I Don't Know What To Do With Myself. An amazing voice.
16.35 😍 the moment I fell in love with GUY all those years ago on Australian idol. Still LOVE him all these years later.
I believe it was Paulini when you asked "who's she?" She was one of the more memorable finalists.
Marcia Hines was also trusted to Colin Powell and is Grace Jones' goddaughter. She has connections!
i remember watching his audition on TV back then. this smiley kid with a fantastic fro walks in and announces he's going to sing Stevie. i thought, "are you now? cause if you can sing Stevie, properly, then you can win this whole thing kid." then this happened. i knew he'd win it there and then. Favourite time of my day!! 🙏🇦🇺❤️
HE WON Australian Idol !
17:26 That is Paulini. I forgot she was from series one. She killed her ‘Chains’ cover on this show. Hopefully you react to it sometime.
You're an Aussie sir. We don't care what you say! You're ours now!!! 👌🏻 We got you!
I remember watching this when it happened and could not believe what I was seeing and hearing!!!! Still blows me away today🤯🤯
Marcia Hynes is one of our true oldie worth a look up too she is the only female judge
Whoo hoo..😃.watched all these shows and fell in love with Guys voice. Going to his concert next month.🙆♀️. postponed from last year😥but finally happening👍👍
Kid was a gift to us from heaven..
He sings like a dream
I got chills and fell in LOVE with Guy at that moment he sang "I'd Die for You!" all those years ago when he sang this in Australian Idol.
Thanks for the trip down memory lane!
Guy Sebastian is 40 turning 41 in October the 26th. He was 21 when he won Idol. He has been famous for 19 years now
The female judge is Marcia Hines who came to Australia from the USA when she was 16 to perform is Jesus Christ Super Star and was an huge star here...you might like to check out some of her songs too
Guy won 2003. Awesome Adelaide, South Australia bloke who has a background in gospel music. Sang every week at church.
Part 2 would be good to hear. He does When Doves Cry, When I Get You Alone, I'll Be There, Crazy in Love, Climb Every Mountain..... Such great memories to see it again.
I really like Guy too. Awesome voice.
Whoever did the arrangements for Australian Idol back then loved to put a key change 2/3 of the way through every performance haha
Marcia Hines the judge in the middle. An amazing Australian Talent. Queen of Pop!
I love Guy and he has a fabulous voice, but when he sang You’re The Voice, I realised just how much this song is John’s. Guy doesn’t have the depth of tone here, but of course he has grown into his own and is just a superb performer now with some killer songs. I thought I would hate this. But you got me! Guy got me! It got me good to watch the improvement.❤️🌈
Both so loved here ❤
One of the judges is a singer who came from the USA to Australia her name is Marcia Hines she had success in the 70's worth checking out.
Awesome thank U ✌️🍷🖤
We can officially claim you as an honorary Aussie- you love "your the voice" and John Farnham as much as us!
If I Remember Correctly , His Grand Final Performance of a Song named - When Angels Brought Me Here ! Was a awesome rendition and truely worthy of his title of The Australian Idol 2003 !!
He even sang it as a special guest on American idol
Just found you, mate thank you for doing this, to be honest we don't get enough of it here, you appreciation for our Musical Talent is astounding, you have re lighted my soul. Johnny Farnham, Jimmy, Tina Arena, you range of our music old and new is amazing, thank you from Bowen Nth Queensland.
Great reaction bro and love Guys voice. Should react to his winning song “angels brought me here” he even sang it on American idol as a special guest
I hope your enjoying what’s been just waiting for you man, cheers.
Check out Guy singing Climb every mountain during his Australian Idol run. It was incredible, he went into win the first Aust. idol. He's our Kelly Clarkson.
He leaves Kelly Clarkson in the shade.
This was awesome to see again, especially with your reactions and insights. We all knew Guy was beginning something special.
Great reaction to guy Sebastian But no one reacted to Ricky Lee From Australia idol She's another great singer 🇦🇺😊🙂
He won!!!
Lets go! Constant uploads, great content. Thank you! :)
When I drop em man they drop heavy lol
Guy's girlfriend was the blonde in the audience and the one he grasped hands with. They have been together since mid teens and decided to be each others "one and only" partners. Jules, they got married, they have 2 kids and are still together till this day.
Hey Brus👋 , Enjoying your Reactions to the Australian Artists that you have listened too , Hope you experience more Aussie Artist's to come in the near future Nick .👍👏👏
Awesome Work Mate !
I always loved Guy's look... Still do.
You commented on his age at the beginning, he was 21 when he auditioned for idol, and he just had his 40th birthday last week on the 26th of October. :)
Just wait to get to the section where Guy sings "Climb Every Mountain "
Guy is an amazing singer, but hearing him sing You’re the Voice makes me realise just how incredible John Farnham is.
Truly deeply love both singers ... have been a fan of John before he was rightly popular ... but !!! ... they are both very different singers and absolute masters of their own genres !!!!!!
Once your request list gets shorter - chk out his brother Chris... his journey is just as good and they are an immensely talented family.
Guy Sebastian and Jimmy Barnes, both garned their fame from Adelaide.
I spent a small fortune on phone calls voting for him to win.
Amazing!
Guy is a judge on The voice Australian now!
He did win and has got better and better since. His newest song Believer is one of his best in my opinion.
I remember watching this with my mum and her saying "I bet he wins" she was so right haha
You're going to have to react to his brothers 'Chris Sebastian' winners journey on The Voice (where Guy was a judge!)
When you called the phone number you would hear a recorded message from Guy thanking you for voting for him. He sounded so nice in that message. I said "my pleasure, dude" to the recorded message.
Guy is freaking amazing.... in saying ain't no body able to sing THE VOICE like johnny farnham !!! It's an Aussie anthem! Sang ! By John!!!!
Two out of three of the judges are also singers Marcia Hines and Mark holden
Oh he won ;) i had his winner cd when it was released
He didn’t look crap, he is cute as. Loved his fro.
I don't know if you've ever heard of Eurovision, but it's a massive singing competition in Europe and he represented Australia in 2015. You should check that out...I think he came fifth in Australia's first time competing. He also competed in World idol and I think he came 2nd in that one.
❤️❤️
Bro do the rest of his journey! Climb every mountain is the best
You have to listen to some Marcia Hines. She was our Queen of Pop for years. Amazing voice.
Oh yeah,he won!!!!
