    Ground skimmer diy: use a upsidedown frisbee with a screw in the middle.

    I just 3D printed a ground skimmer and added a bolt to it and I can't wait to try it because it probably cost me $3 or less for the print and the bolt.

    I made my 'ground pod' from a discarded aluminum frying pan through which I drilled a 10mm hole. I use it bottom down for on even, soft ground where I want to be able to slide the thing, or bottom up where the ground is uneven e.g. rocky terrain.

    I have been a big fan of the Cotton Carrier for the past several years. I used to have neck problems when I came back from a wildlife shoot from having a strap around my neck. The Cotton Carrier cured that.

      It's a super awesome piece of equipment! Besides the gimbalhead, it's definitely the best new tool I have to use. I'm in the process of making a cinematic adventure with it that I'll release in 2 weeks or so, so stay tuned :)

    I saw Steve Gettle using the Skimmer Ground Pod when I was photographing a Sandhill crane nest with him. What an awesome accessory I had never even heard of

    I have that same skimmer and gimbal head and have never used them once!! I always end up going freehand!! I guess just less too carry around when birding!! Good video Jeremy!!!

    • @JeremyNeipp
      @JeremyNeipp  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Haha nothing wrong with that! Sometimes the scenario is right to use them and sometimes not. I go freehand about 50-75% of the time as well... although now I'll take my Cotton Carrier on those days haha.

    The skimmer ground pod is going to be a game changer for me. I have only used mine once but it was well worth the investment after just the first use.. I just ordered a new gimbal to use with it, can't wait to pair that up and test it out.

    • @JeremyNeipp
      @JeremyNeipp  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Same! I’ve only used it thoroughly for one day now but in that specific scenario it was absolutely crucial. It’s a specialized piece that is incredibly useful. Hope you have fun with your new gimbal!

    I actually have the manfrotto pixie mini but I never thought of using it as a ground pod! That's actually pretty smart! I have the regular ground pod as well but don't always carry it as it's pretty bulky. Guess I'll keep the Pixie mini now in the bag just in case! Thanks for sharing!

      @@JeremyNeipp On that subject, have you ever noticed that getting too close to the ground can introduce pretty noticeable heat distortion?
      This summer I was shooting semipalmated pipers in a tidal zone just as the tide was retreating. I didn't have a ground pod and used a rock to rest the camera only about an inch off the ground, so VERY close to the ground. When I looked back at my pics, every single one of them (except the safety shots I took standing up) had an ever so slight softness to them (to varying degrees, observable only when peeping).
      It surprised me because while I've definitely seen heat distortion before in my pics, I had never seen it that close to a subject (I was only 3-6m away from them!).
      It seems like because the tide was retreating and the sand was wet, even that was enough to introduce heat distortion from the sun. I don't live near a tidal zone and was on a trip so this was a lesson learned from me! I still got some very nice shots despite that 🙂
      Just wondering if that's something you've also noticed before. I didn't getting TOO low on the ground could have such a downside! For me that's when I decided to pick up the ground pod 😅 as I'm sure had I been only a few more inches off the ground it would've been much better.
      Cheers!

    I find this kind of groundpod a bit to easy to move around aka not stable while panning. So I made one myself of old frying pan. I drill a hole and attach a gimball head to it. It is attached with leveling base and panoramic base. Therefore I can get smooth rapid movement for tracking in stills mode when I unlock the gimbal and lock the panoramic base or fluid even movement with enough drag when I lock the gimbal and unlock panoramic head. Also I get very precise control ofer my level for panning in video. But most importantly I can screw it all to the base edge up to push it around on the ground or edge down to make is stable. Also I cut 6 shallow teeth on the edge so taht I could drive different section of the edge to the ground more easily. Therefore I can always get the base perfectly level on almost all terrain excepto for the rock without adjusting the head.

    • @JeremyNeipp
      @JeremyNeipp  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That's awesome! Yea I've heard of many people using frying pans before, I like your little 6 teeth inclusion though. Smart choice. I guess I like this ground pod also largely because it's light and portable where as a frying pan is much heavier, but you're right it does provide more stability. The only time I ever use a ground pod is on sandy beaches though, and in those environments this thing seems to be plenty steady, so I guess it also depends on where you use it.
