  • This month Mikael ties his mean night fly - Kraken. A version with influences from one of his other proven night fly patterns "Barrett Bimbo". The fly is designed to have a great silhouette, a lot of motion, a bit extra “sound” and pimped with phosphorescent “glow in the dark” materials. A great fly that can be hackled in different ways. Mikael shows three ways of using the ostrich body feathers to create both extra motion and volume.
If you want to tie or fish your own Kraken we offer you customized packs with fly tying materials and ready flies. Buy one-time packs, or better-join the subscription and get the packs delivered to you automatically every month at a beneficial price.

Thanks Micke that's a very good night fly.
I have started to like the butterfly model most ! I notice as I'm fish this on a intermediate that's a killer! I prefer them to be pretty large to achieve even more silhouette! As we know at night it's very important to fish high in water column.
Thanks for show us how you tie them.
All people do it bit different and that's personal touch. Best regards Lax Björne

Fishing for sea trout in the dark is my favourite type of fly fishing, it's so exciting! However, I once hooked a large fish on a deeply fished sunk lure, "must be well over 10lbs" thought I, and it was but, sadly, it was a salmon and not a sea trout. I have never been so disappointed when landing a salmon before or since ;-)

Thanks for the video. Awesome instructions.
Salmon don’t see the fly only from underneath. You don’t present your fly right over its head. They do see the jc and the stuff on the side of the fly. They are indeed lower than the fly but not under it. Of course we can catch fish without jc, what a funny question. Actually , it is true about all the materials we use. That doesn’t mean it’s useless. Anyway, thinking the fish only see the flies from underneath is a major mistake.
Keep posting those vids. They are great.
    Cheers and tight lines!

well thats correct... what i say and mean is from behind and underneath... ofcvourse few fish see it straight from underneath - but the point here is that very very few fish see the fly from the tioers perspective so we need to bare this in mind while tying... sorry If I was a bit sloppy in my comments. i have been talking about the fish perspective so long so maybe i take some of it for granted ...

Hello and thank you for the many fine videos. I find the butterfly versions very effective at night not only sea trout but large resident brown trout as well. I have noticed that the Ostrich feather over the body is easily damaged or torn to the point it has to be removed in order for the fly to swim properly again. To remedy this I simply use the ribbing to fasten it along the top of the body after the feather is tied on. It remains mostly undamaged for a longer life for the fly. I hope this is useful for you.

Nice video and very nice tying! Can you say something about the hooks you use on this fly?

Hi, Thanks i use my SALARE hooks doubbles and trebles on this fly.. but i bet a singel would do the jobb to. Slow water fly so not to big hooks - balance is important!
