  • Campbells Quarry a 16mm to the foot scale battery operated layout to show working Ruston Bucyrus excavators. The dragline loads sand into skips which is then transported to the other end of the layout. The skips are then unloaded automatically. Once unloaded the skips are moved to the lower level where a face shovel reloads them.

Wow - just as I remembered the gravel pit I worked in. This is fantastic realism - a credit to you for sure. Long may you enjoy.

Seen it a number of times at shows, could watch it for hours on end. Especially those excavators, just magnificent

Fabulous working models of a cable excavator and a dragline on a compact and detailed layout.
And everything worked!! Too many layouts at exhibitions are let down by lack of action or faulty operation.
Well done Sir, I salute you!

It would appear that the steam shovel was the harder machine to make fully functional as the trick is to get the dipper to move in and out. The drag line by comparison is a lot easier to make fully functional.
Both machines require several motors, gearing, cabling and wiring.
    Tricky stuff.

It does require a lot of concentration as I believe that the controls are pretty much as the prototype except without the foot pedals!

Each individual part would be wow . But put two unloading points, two loading points by two different methods and a train moving it round. Just fantastic. Well thought out and well done. Especially in such a small space. Big needn’t be best as this shows all too well. Amacf

One of the great features of this layout is that it is self contained and in vision, so the sand is dug out of one pit, taken by train to the second pit, dug out of there and returned to where it started from all without behind the scenes subterfuge

+Christine Woolley Glad you liked it Christine. John tells me that after this show he has had several invitations to take the layout to other events, and he's also adding several improvements to the layout. As he helps preserve and demonstrate the real machines he does have quite a feel for how they operate and part of the reason for building the layout was to try and find ways of duplicating the operating characteristics of the real machines in miniature - have a look at my Leighton Buzzard Railway video, half way through and you can see a real RB face shovel in action.

    • @MrRnipperBrockleBroadcasting
      @MrRnipperBrockleBroadcasting  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

16mm to the foot or 1:19. The track is 32mm or “Gauge 0” representing two foot narrow gauge track, the whole layout is about the size of a dining table

I suspect that this quarry is some Accountants tax dodge, a loss making business to hide some funny money business elsewhere?
Seriously though, it's a great working model and it must have taken ages to work out the motors and controls arrangements for not one but two machines. Even though it is "the size of a dining table" at that scale it qualifies as a Micro Layout! 😅
I will admit that after spending many hours in the backyard sandpit with my Tonka machines that I am more than slightly jealous!

Either that or a Government work scheme! 🤠 If I remember correctly the size was limited by the maximum that could be fitted in to the owners car, and yes I believe that it did take some time to design / work out, and that the controls closely mimicked those of the real machines except there weren't any foot pedals. Unfortunately I don't know if in 2024 it still exists, but the 2024 National Show will be on Saturday 27th April at Stoneleigh Park, and I know there are already several Aussies coming!

It would look better if he emptied into one then collected from the other every time. When he immediately collects from the very same one he just emptied into it looks a pointless excercise straight away rather than extending the illusion.
