Testing the Limits of a Subcompact Tractor Stump Grinder

  • Larry needed several very large black locust stumps ground. Tractor Time with Tim takes the Deere 1025R and the Ventrac with stump grinders. We were not sure if these compact tractor stump grinders would be able to grind these tree stumps. Larry uses Vinny while Tim uses Johnny with the Baumalight stump grinder to get the job done.

    I appreciate the honesty of this channel and that you shared your mistake with the audience. I don't have much need for a stump grinder presently, but at first I was sure that if I wanted one, the BaumaLight was definitely not the one I would choose. Then you tightened up the lift arms and it looked a whole lot better. Vinny is a great machine, but for the price, the BaumaLight attachment looks pretty good.

    Hi Tim
    I started thinking about getting a stump grinder again.
    I looked at the Baumalight and its now $3,600
    I kept looking and found the Woodland Mills is still $2,399
    So I looked up other implements I have bought a couple years ago and ended up with serious sticker shock
    The 5 foot Rototiller from Tractor Supply is now DOUBLE what I paid and the 5 foot Scraper is $500 more
    I deliberated on buying the Woodland Mills for over a week
    Well I didn't want to wait for them to raise their prices so I ordered the Stump Grinder and the 6 inch PTO Chipper
    I hope My Wife remembers Me saying I was going to buy them because it's too late now
    Thanks for all Your Videos
    I finally figured out how to get that TH-cam APP on Our 65 inch TV and You are now a TV star
    Much better that the MAC monitor

    they did a great job! last time we had some big stumps (like 10-15 of them) we had a 20 ton excavator over to fill in our pond, so we luckily got rid of them quickly and they were put deep into the ground. We made the land back into pasture to mow for our horses. Just like it was 15 years ago. Take care!

    I have a Woodland Mills unit only because I already had their chipper on my 30hp Kioti HST. One of the advantages of the tractor mounted grinders is the frt loader to deal with the grindings left and you don`t have a truck to back thru the yard. Both huge problems

    I notice it's kicking hard because it's coming at the stump from the wrong side. When it bites or kicks, the rotation drives it further into the stump. You want it in case of a catch to kick itself out of the stump otherwise it will slide Jonny 3-4 inches in a single pass as it drives itself across the stump.

    Where I am at in North Eastern PA, there are rocks everywhere. How well do these tractor grinders hold up with the average snall rocks that could be hit around a stump? I've rented walk behind stump grinders several times now and at some point, I probably should have just bought one. I have a Mahindra 1538.

    Hey Tim - Another great video. Have you ever considered adding how long it took you to do your jobs to your videos, or comments. Would be interesting to see what others are doing in a set period of time. Understanding there are a number of variables that would be different between every person. But for example, how long did it take to grind that 3' stump? Even rough estimates. I have considered getting one of those grinders because of your videos, as I have had several requests for stump removal. Just not sure if it would be a good return on my investment to get one of those.... Just a thought... Good work again BTW, I love your honesty of making mistakes and leaving those in the videos (not tightening your chains in this video)

      Charles Brandee Speckman, as someone who, like Tim, sometimes captures videos of projects then puts it on TH-cam, the video part slows you down. It’s very hard to tell what is video time and what is project time. It’s also inconsistent. It would be not fair to give this data as it would overstate the project time.

    What is smoking behind the tractor at 12:03?

  • @darkwinter6028

    Not having a grinder; I just dig them out with the backhoe. It’s a fair amount of digging; but well, gotta’ work with what ya’ got...

    At the end of your video it looked like your stump grinder on the john Deere was smoking. Was it or what there a fire there. Also I don't think I would want to rattle my tractor that violently so I guess I'll just cut them low and burn them out.

    • @dog01b52

      Looks like the stump that was burning in the 11:13 shot and the ending shot had the tractors in front of it. Just guessing.

    I'm sure woodturners, like me, are cringing as they think of all that good wood going up in smoke! Here in Arizona, it's hard to find good wood to turn.

    you spoke about the perfectionist in you...I know this problem...but the annoying part is it costs much time sometimes....iam the same kind of person...it is a good attitude, but costs time...thats the downside of it.😂

    What horsepower do you have at PTO of Johnny? I have a Kubota bx2370 and curious if it will be enough tractor???

    • @TractorTimewithTim
      @TractorTimewithTim  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We ran it on a dyno in the bx vs 1025r comparison. 1025r has 25.5 pto hp and Bx2680 had 24.5-25.0 pto hp.

    It seems like the ventrac does a better job of lessening the vibration on the operator and it’s not vibrating the hole machine as bad as the John deer does that have something to do with the duels on the ventrac

    • @TractorTimewithTim
      @TractorTimewithTim  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dunno for sure. But most of the time, Vinny vibrates less when grinding. Occasionally it starts jumping too. Kinda hard to control this at times with either machine.

      Works pretty well on normal stumps. These super-hard black locust were unusually difficult. That is why we posted it. We like folks to see the extreme limits of how an attachment will behave.
