  • Matching the Arc to the Bend creates a Straight Line Path of the Rod Tip - this is the axiom of fly casting that generates a True Loop! A True Loop is a loop with Parallel Top and Bottom Legs. When combined with a Smooth Application of Power and Proper Timing....well, that's it. That's all you need right there.
Maximize your efficiently, get big flies moving fast, and shoot them a long way. This is fly casting!

A total a-ha moment watching this! Totally get why some of my rods react differently than others. Great video Gunnar!

Excellent illustrations during your casting tutorial between two completely different action or flex rods. Thanks for sharing.

Dude, that was super informative! A few months back I noticed I was occasionally getting a more efficient cast so I spent the summer trying to focus on making that happen more often. Just by feel and practice I'm now maximizing efficiency on about 75% of my casts. This going to help me improve even more. Thanks man!

A rep for Scientific Anglers told me that grass casting was very hard on lines, a major factor in premature line wear. This was related to a back and forth discussion on choosing a streamer sink tip line to suit my fishing and gear. I guess it would depend on how short and gritty the grass/ground is.

If you hold back as you unload that flexible rod, you'll cast that rod fine, no tailing loop
. With that fast action rod stroke too.

i bet this is why my casting sucks, a lot of my fishing is with fiberglass rods, and my two go-to rods are a glass 4 and a glass 7, then when i pick up my carbon 11 i suck at casting it for the first couple hours before i figure out 'wait this isn't my overlined glass 4 weight, this is a carbon 11 weight with an appropriate line' and then i start throwing darts. i still have a hard time getting past 70 feet with any rod and i think creep is part of that. my line tangling at my feet also isn't helping.

Great information. Finally authorized to practice again after a broken wrist and major rotator cuff/bicep surgery. Last night I was doing the reverse...matching the bend and arc to the diminished athleticism. Not as satisfying😂

What do you change when using 14-16wt rods and sinking lines? Feel Ike I’m going to get a large fly stuck in me each time

Hi Gunner! Interesting video. I'm not sure if it applies to me being that I'm in a wheelchair but we shall see. Give me your thoughts.
