Lake Bacalar - The Lagoon of 7 Colors in Mexico

Bacalar was founded by the Mayans around 415 AD. by the name of Sian Ka’an Bakhalal. For centuries, it was harassed by pirates due to its commercial importance in Central American merchandise and for being one of the places where the dye stick abounded, coveted by the English for dyeing textiles, due to its indelible dark pigment.

A very frequent activity in Bacalar is wood carving in various forms. The dye stick is used to dye traditional clothing that can be purchased locally, such as hand-embroidered huipiles.
