What an awesome project! Love the execution! Those fan starter caps rarely go bad, even in 15+ year old fans. Most likely the bushing were crooked from when you pulled the shaft out and put it back in. Happens all the time when I take fans apart. Trick is to put some decent bearing lube in the bushings, put the fab back together and then with a tiny hammer, tap the shaft head on once or twice, then it should spin. With the shaft spinning and the propeller attached, get in behind the prop and repeatedly tap the daft right near the from of the housing. The vibrations help center the shaft in the bushings and make the fans run much smoother. Cheers
Sorry for all the typos. As you figured, shaft alignment is critical. There is only a millimeter or two of clearance between the rotor and the electromagnets :P I'm 100% sure your first motor worked because it was making a good sound, was just stuck. If you had kept on it it would surely have worked

Such are the trials and tribulations of establishing a fan base. Love your music selections on your videos, keep in mind I am 65 years old and what I like is probably not in line with the musically illiterate.
Those style fan motors have self aligning bearings that don't quite align themselves correctly. Sometimes what you need to do is give them a tap with a mallet or hammer to set the bearings right. Matthias Wandel mentioned that in one of his videos. After taking a motor like that apart and putting it back together, I found his advice to be true. The motor ran horribly and overheated until I hit it a few times. After that it spun right up without issue.

It would be cool if you added gears that spun around inside the fan casing. Attach it with the main motor and just use for aesthetical purposes.
