I went to watch the film in Coventry. The place was full of northern soul people and at the end of the film the audience danced in the aisles when the titles rolled and I remember the young usherettes saying they had never ever seen anything like it. It brought back all the memories of dancing and all nighters. I feel lucky to have lived during this period when guys danced freely and didn’t care.
50 years ago went on a sunday night to wigan casino , wow , changed my life as a 13 year old boy ,63 years old , wigan casino music , lifechanging time
Good film i became aware of northern soul when i stsrted middle school i went to discos and there were e guys doing the disco and northern soul songs were played edwin starr songs especially i knew all the songs from the film great memories discovering northern soul unfortunately i wasnt old enough to go to wigan casino i was doing my last year in middle school when wigan casino closed down and sadly there was a fire
I started going to the Wheel when I was 15 in 1969 I didnt take any drugs for the first month I went there ,at that age you had the energy to dance all night.I started by taking a few blues or dex and found I enjoyed it but I was a working guy and knew I had to be up 6 am Monday morning for work so everything was in moderation. When the wheel closed I went to various other clubs like the Torch Mecca , Metro Bistro in Wakefield but it was never like the magic of the Wheel.I continued taking the pills but it was only ever for a Saturday night. When I graduated I started to work in the North sea. Some times I would get the Sunday morning train to Scotland from Wigan and all the guys and girls from Scotland who had been at the alnighter at Wigan Casino would be on the train. I went to Wigan on several occasions but the whole scene had changed for me so I decided to stay away. I never regretted the experience of taking amphetamines,in fact Ienjoyed it but only for the allnighters.I still love the music and it will never die for me .
I absolutely loved & still love Northern Soul, & I'm sorry Lisa but the way this film portrayed the drug culture on the scene could've done irreparable damage & influenced any parents of up & coming young Soulies to forbid their children from getting involved in Northern Soul at all
+liam whitcombe What do you mean, it portrayed the reality of the scene for most of those taking part in the early 1970s? I have the evidence to counter if you suggest otherwise. If you are saying, never mind the evidence, we should sanitize the past and present an ideal image - is that what we should be about? Given the widespread availability of drugs since the 1970s, the argument that sensible recreational use has been 'normalized' is it really necessary to whitewash the past when the reality is that young people are far more drug aware than they were in the 1970s? The one point I would agree with was the depiction of moving from pill taking to injecting was too fast and cavalier - people that "cranked" were in the minority and tended to be secretive about the activity, the film brushed over a strong barrier. Irreparable damage is a gross exaggeration - more damage done by DJ's playing sub-standard sounds just because they're rare... sounds that are sub-northern.
+adrewsona I WAS part of the N.S scene. A Casino regular from 76 to the last night 9 September 81 I'm NOT saying drugs weren't a big part & I also have proof of this. It's my younger brothers death certificate helped in part by speed
This film was one of the best British films ever made. The look of the film was spot on. Great acting too. I had 4 problems with the film. 1 how can you have Lisa Stansfield in a soul film and not having her singing, not even 1 song! 2 Way to much music when not in a soul club or party scene. If there was less music you would remember the songs more. Went over board trying to fit every favorite song in the movie. 3 Drugs where part of the scene BUT this is not how we want to remember the Northern soul scene! 4 Female director, so why is the film told with 2 male lead actors and not a female character. Better made film that Soul Boy I like the story in Soul Boy better even if the beginning of it is silly. Did anyone else think the black girl in the film was based on Fran Franklin?
Lisa never went to the casino etc as there was no creche this film didn't make enough money for the producer , sound track brilliant film not so ,,,,,,,,ktf

Lisa Stansfield was talking bollocks, northern soul is about the dance music and escapism, the joy of dancing to the beat, nothing to do with any sympathy with Detroit.

It was an honest portrayal of the drugs culture back them just as This is England portrayed an honest depiction on the E scene.
