You should be so proud of what you have achieved, your allotment is lovely, well cared for, and your allotment diaries are an absolute joy to watch. You deserve a pat on the back, a cup of tea, and a present from a wish list. I watched in awe as you battled your way through clearing your new plot, Look what you have achieved so far, Well done Emma! xx

The sweetcorn look amazing, your whole two plots are a credit to you. You have worked so hard especially with the new plot and you don’t give up, and please don’t.
I’ve been gardening for years and the way we learn is really by things going wrong and keep trying. Thanks

A few videos back, you asked a question - half jokingly, I thought - about snails coming back to the place they were removed from.
One part of my garden is surrounded by a 6 foot tall brick wall. On one side is my back garden where I grow all my stuff. On the other side is just lawn (and associated weeds!). I’ve been going out mid-to-late evening most days, collecting up the snails from the back garden and dropping them over wall.
On more than one occasion, I’ve noticed the next day in daylight, several snails climbing the wall heading back from where they came.
I now have to gather them up and transport them across my access road and dispose of them over a second wall; my second line of defence, if you will.
If it continues, I’m going to mark some of them with acrylic paint to see if they really do try to return.
Slugs don’t enjoy the same catch-and-release privileges. A size 11 boot sorts them out.

Please do mark them and let us know. 😮

Hello silly ol' Emma, you need to hear that you are fun, delightful, adorable, helpful, encouraging, caring, and one of my favorite youtube vloggers to watch. Not to mention those gorgeous sweaters you wear. I am such a dirty gardener, I ruin things first time I wear them.
I would not watch your diaries if I did not want to see what you're wacking in.
Im an OLD Urban backyard garden lady that grew up in the country. I try to grow as much food as I possibly can on 100ftx25ft portion of my city yard and whatever we dont eat or preserve for the winter, I give away. I intentionally grow a lot so I can give it away to food pantries.
I watched you today talk about growing Corn. Until a few years ago, I direct seeded all my Corn but the Squarrels, Chipmonks, and Mice kept eating the seeds overnight and if by chance a seedling grew a few inches, Robins came along and snapped the plant off at the ground. So I started planting the seeds in pots, planted them out when they got large enough that the Robins didnt bother them and the seeds were no longer capable of screaming to the Squarrels, Chipmonks and Mice to come eat them.
In my first years of growing my own food, I didn't understand how Corn on the Cob actually happened until I did some research into why I wasnt getting any or the ears were not formed or full. To grow a full ear of Corn Kernels, we need to understand how that happens.
The Stalk is what grows from the seed. In time the Tassel begins to grow out the top of the Stalk. At the same time you begin to see where the ear of Corn is emerging from the side of the Stalk. As the Tassel matures with Pollen, the Ear matures with Silk... the hairy stuff at the tip of the ear. When the Pollen is ready to spread through the air, the Silk is where we want the Pollen to fall. Each strand of Silk is in fact attached to inside the husk on the Cob- the ear of Corn where 1 Kernel of Corn will form. Every strand of Silk is a potential Corn Kernel. If a strand of silk isn't pollinated, a Corn Kernel will not form. Corn doesn't happen when Pollen mingles with Pollen. When we plant all our Corn in a single row, the chances of getting all Silk strand Pollenated are much less. If planted in a group, the chances are better. When someone talks about Cross Pollination, they are talking about the Pollen from one Variety of Corn falling on the Silk of a different Variety. There are Mad Scientists that work very hard to provide us growers with the best possible Varieties of Corn by cross Pollinating one Variety with another on purpose with hopes to come up with some really awesome Corn. Cross Pollinating isnt a bad thing, unless we count on a particular Variety- Say- Super Sweet or Cream and Sugar.

Hi from the Netherlands here, and same story with slugs and snails. Mayby you could try to get some hedgehogs on your alotment? Lure them with piles of branches and leaves where they can crawl under and stay dry. I live in a pretty 'brick'/pavey area, but my garden is overgrown lol and the hedgehogs love it. I have one now, and he/she is doing his/her best with eating a lot of them, I see a lot of slug house parts here and there and have a lot less plant damage since a week or 2. If you don't have hedgehogs, I hear that walking ducks are also great at eating slugs and so, and do not much damage to a garden. You could also put a trap(sacraficial) crop around the plants you covet.

That shady first bed should have something like spinach or mint in it!! Mint would also come back year after year and it would cover the whole bed, look and smell pretty and you would not have to really bother with that bed ever again! :)
    Looks great so far!

Hi Emma, lovely video, and your care of the plot really shows well. I use long yoghurt or cream pots with holes in for the deep roots, that way you can grow them on a bit longer in the plots so they are up to slugs and snail attacks as well as can take the transfer better. Well done, you're really becoming a good allotmenteer. I always enjoy watching, thank you. X

13:22 - 15:30 My approach to such a weeding task is to loosen the soil with a digging fork first. That way I get out more weed roots so they won't immediately grow back.

I aim for an organic vegetable garden. But if I get no harvest what's the point? I use a slug killer one time early in the garden season, couple of months before planting, to reduce the numbers of slugs and snails, and therefore eliminate their potential offspring. Seems to work very well.

I do the same. I grow a cover crop very early to attract them and bait them. I cut the cover crop. Remove from my beds. Things are so much better for my food crops after. If I don’t do this, it’s a battle always.

I do the three sisters planting method.. and put my sweetcorn in a spiral which works well with squash and dwarf french beans so it doesn't get a tangled mess ... also while sunflowers are allelopathic, which means that they exude chemicals that act as herbicides to the surrounding plants which means they inbit other plants growth ..they seem to be OK with sweetcorn, maybe because it is a grass!! ..Swift F1 have been the best producers for me so far especially in our climate in Cumbria 🙂

You're doing a great job. Work in a garden is never really "done". Suggestion: if you're worried about pollination of your corn, you could always hand-pollinate them. I've done it in a garden that was protected from wind, and it worked.

    You can Hand Pollinating Sweetcorn
Carefully detach a tassel from the top of the plant - scissors are best to prevent the pollen from being jolted free too soon. Then simply dust the tassel back and forth over the silks, taking care to cover every single. Good luck Emma!

When I plant corn I grow iron blocks and plant very close together. Like 3-6 inches apart. In the space you used I would have put like, 30. I know it sounds close but it's worked ! Just an idea for next year if yours don't work well

Hi, love ur allotment. U taught me something i didnt know about not planting different varieties of sweetcorn together, thank u. I dont know if any of this info will help u but I grow sweetcorn every year and I start in pots to, when I plant out I plant them a little deeper like u can with tomatoes and that can help stability. Also u might need to do hand pollination if its not windy enough, i found this out last year, just shake the plants ,its because every hair/silk needs pollinating or ur sweetcorn will have some plump kernels and some missing spaces as each strand is to develop 1 kernel. Hope that makes sense. Also sunflowers can stunt other plants growth because they are allelopathic, they secrets toxins from their roots to stunt the other plants growth. Good luck 🤞

Emma before I watch your new awesome blog, I tried find one where you were trying to drown slugs to put a comment on. Today I resorted to salt but it's ugly to sprinkle salt direct on them or chop with scissors 🤢 but I've made about half a pint of salt solution with water and those little buggers don't come out. I tried beer traps, strulch and all sorts but didn't work. They'd just leave the beer garden half drunk along with their mates from the other plots...

i think the thing about sweetcorn cross-pollinating and going bad is a bit of a myth. what variety a plant gets pollinated with should not affect the appearance of the seed. for example, if you grow green peas next to purple peas, you don't get purple peas on the green pea plants. that colour cross will only appear in the next generation. if you think about it, the corn seeds you planted are already hybrids formed by the exact cross pollination you mentioned (unless they are one of the 1% of open pollinated corn varieties). also, i think corn actually have very shallow roots, not deep like you said. i have sometimes had to stake corn if there was a bad storm coming in the summer. having said that, your corn seedlings look great and i reckon there is a close to 100% chance you're going to be harvesting a lot of corn this year!
