- I was feeding my lizard, Sonora, and I took her cave out of her cage so that the crickets wouldn't go inside of it...and I had Rocky on my shoulder, and he climbed down, and investigated the cave. Soon, I heard him chirping, and what do you know, he's inside of it.
Such a silly boy~ [Who then proceeded to bite at me when I was taking the cave away...tsk]

Rocky is an 8 year old male cockatiel, and I have had him for 8 years now.

My bird does not want expensive toys. He wants boxes. He loves boxes.
Bonus points for him because he never poops in them (keeping his ''nest'' clean).
My bird likes to lay at the bottom of his cage, which I lay down multiple paper towels now to keep it dry and keep the poo from sticking to the bottom of his cage too. I tore up paper towel but he used to it like build a small wall around the cage. He also keeps his area where he likes to lay at , back left corner, very clean. He is level with my face if he is at the bottom of his cage. If he is on a perch then he is about 2ft above my head and has 2 mirrors to look into and talk to "that " bird he sees. LOL
They know when they are being entertaining and amusing, that's for sure.
A Krenwinkle It's definitely nesting behavior, especially since Rocky feels so cozy inside. Give him a female friend and he will get busy. If he doesn't kill her first, that is. YES, I meant what I just said! Research it!

I had a small box just big enough for a cockatiel and my bird climbed in there and started whistling too! They loves boxes and things like that!
I never knew that. I haven't come across a lot of helpful info, but i am not looking either. I try to interact with him as much as I can and I rarely close his cage door or pull the sheet down over his cage unless he is too noisy and I feel he is over stimulated. I have loved having him too.
The joy and happiness that these birds give me is irreplaceable. Cute birds have a special place in my heart
As you can see, the cave cockatiel In his natural environment can be very aggressive toward any other animals attempting to approach his territory, like the lion or the rhinoceros, which the cave cockatiel can easily frighten off with his frightening calls. if combat is necessary he can inflict serious wounds on any opponent with his powerful six inch long talons and powerful beak which is strong enough to snap a tigers neck in one bite.....

Too cute! This reminds me of my feathered friend Jojo and, when he was much younger, used to hide underneath my dresser over at my grandparents' house whenever he got near it. He didn't whistle like Rocky did here. But he would happily chirp every so often and noisily chew on the wood. Whenever I came too close, he'd charge out and be ready to bite me at moment's notice. I never understood why he'd do that. But the nesting and finding a mate scenario MIGHT be a possibility, idk.

Author4Croix The owner of the petstore I go to lost a bird recentry. The bird died because she couldn't push an egg out. She was 14 years old and it was her first egg ever. The owner was sure ''she'' was a ''he'' for 14 years.
Nesting behavior is for both male and female cockatiels. Both of them make the nest, sit on the eggs and feed the chicks.

Halpin2006 Oh not always, if you notice soon enough you might save the bird. (Basically, warmth, high humidity and rubbing lubricant to the cloaca to help the hen push the egg out.)
If you can rush the bird to a vet they might be able to save the bird... or sadly the bird can die on the way to the clinic.
The sad thing about birds is they are very good at pretending they are perfectly fine untill they really can't hide a problem anymore and by then you don't have much time.
It can be a good idea to go to the vet anyway even if you manage to help the hen push the egg out as there might be another egg stuck for the same reason the previous one did (ex : calcium deficiency).
A lot of females never lay eggs because their first egg turns and jams up their birthing canal. Males will 'talk' while females rarely 'talk' and instead just do the typical cockatiel fire alarm low battery chirp. You should get your bird sexed so you know if you need to get a birdy c-section done if it hasn't laid an egg while it should. It'll cause premature death.

and here I thought it was only my weird ass bird that liked playing in 'caves.' except I make them out of blankets. she'll sit inside them and churtle and tweet but if I try to get close she hisses and bites at me.

Rocky wants to mate and have a family. The dark cave reminds him of a nesting box, or a nest. It's in his genes. He's so sweet.

My tiel broke his wing while fledging so during healing I made a playlist of videos for him to watch while I work. Rocky is at the top of the list. BirdieBoy likes all males that look like him, but Rocky is a favorite, I could put this video on loop and he's good. Thanks for all the good times!

My parrots have always had sleeping boxes - even the boys. My current boy Sun Conure Phoenix lives in a huge cage outside and his box (a cockatiel nesting box on it's side) is where he hides if a cat comes by or if he just want's to chill. He also sleeps in there, it makes them feel safer and less exposed. As you can tell from Rocky, they also like the acoustics.

So, just found this video...Nelix is about 13, one day about 3 yrs ago I put a long soda box on top of fridge an put a couple colored jelly beans in it. He went in and was moving them around an setting on them. If I tried to get get them out he'd attack me. I've since upgraded his box to a nice square one with several jelly beans and chroched blanket. He protects those fake eggs with his life..and does not go poop in it. Good to know mine isn't the only one who loves his box, he's not wierd. Think if there is male and female they both share in caring for the eggs...He thinks these are eggs.
I have a cockatiel that I had gotten from a mom and her teen daughter. I love him to death and it looks like him in this video. LOL My rocky likes to act like he is going to bite you but won't plus he spreads his wings like that too. i couldn't recall if I had left a message and figured I would leave one before I scroll down to check. i love him to death too and I know he is old. I am going to miss him if he passes away too. But for now , I can still give him love and a happy home.
