I witnessed a road tragedy in 1996 and I still remember it all. This is the story..

Thanks for sharing this, Its all too easy to make a simple mistake on the roads that has disproportionately negative consequences.
You mentioned he was just down the street from home and had probably navigated that junction thousands of times without any issue, do you think complacency might have played a role in this crash?

@@FiestyFez Thanks for your comment.. complacency could have been a factor, plus I think he was in a rush and didn't want to be stuck behind my car

You aren't wrong in any way... I am perhaps a little jaded. I hope this taught you to be respectful and understanding of healthcare workers who deal with this sort of thing every day.
Our attitude to driving in Australia is rivalled only by our asinine obsession with sports. It is what it is, it won't change in my lifetime.
It's not hard to drive defensively, but I am the only one I see doing it (in Brisbane and Ipswich). Everyone tailgates, people barely pay attention and no-one has any patience. The most frustratingly common are the absolute wankers who do 90 in 80 zones and 90 in 100 zones... I seriously wish great harm on these people. I frequently find myself passing people who 2 minutes ago aggressively and dangerously changed lanes or cut someone else off. This is MOST people, the outliers are the people who drive at the speed limit (that means 100 in the 100 zone and 80 in the 80 zone and 40 in the 40 zone), between driving and dealing with the public in Brisbane, it is so hard not to have an extremely poor impression. Most trained dogs are better behaved than most adult Brisbanites... probably freer thinkers too.

@@user-um2uf9zq4c I agree with a lot of what you say. Many cars I drive don't have ABS, so I keep my distance from the car in front.. and often someone merges in front of me. Oh well, just got to adjust spacing.. I do wonder whether people think ABS means they can tailgate.
One thing to consider: I once bought a new VW group car (in the 90s, pre GPS speed measurement) and wondered why everyone passed me on the highway. After getting an RACQ Master Check before the warranty ran out, I was told my Speedo was nearly 10% under the actual speed. From then, I did an indicated 109 in 100 zones. Perhaps the 90km/h drivers think they're doing 100? Doesn't excuse 90 in the 80 zone.
