I think the main problem with the new Larry is how clean he is
2006 felt like a "Manhunt" level, while the remastered feels more like Antoine, it's just too clean

Yeah, that's why bosses in dr games are usually pretty bad even though the core gameplay is good.
I mean, that's the key part of zombie media is how we humans react to it. The existential threat of zombies brings out our innermost selves.
Honestly it feels like too many zombie movies and shows are now just “Humans…are the real monsters…” when no, it’s the zombies

The lighting makes Larry look more terrifying in the remaster, but the design of the original Larry is scary all on its own. All in all both are pretty good, but personally I think the older version was way more disturbing.
If there is a positive I can give to the animators for censored Larry is that they certainly made him look unhinged with those eyes of his. 👁🫦👁
My only problem with the new one is he actually dies while in the original it always looked like he fell asleep lol

The redesign makes him more into the idea of masproduction of meat and compsumption that original butcher didnt had. He felt kinda random as a boss fight and now its slightly more intresting.

I felt like Larry in this version looks way more Caucasian than he does Asian especially with his voice, it sounded More Southern than Northern joe. I don't know if they wanted to americanize Larry or something. Again I have no clue it just he felt a lot different to me

New Larry is still designed to look Asian, just not stereotypically. His last name is still Chiang. He’s also voiced by Japanese American actor Brent Mukai in the remaster.

Friendly reminder that Capcom is a Japanese company, and Japan and China have been at odds with each other for AGES and they both have horrible stereotypes about one another. So this was one of the stereotypes that Japan has in regards to the Chinese. I'm glad this was changed in the remake.

Putting aside the differences in graphical quality, I have mixed thoughts on the new design vs the old one. I like the fact that Larry looks more professional rather than looking like a serial killer. I know a lot of people are divided on how he isn’t _as_ Chinese, although the original design definitely was a bit problematic, but I don’t mind it. The only real problem I have is the voice acting, the new voice actor they chose doesn’t really have the same feel as the only one, he doesn’t really sound Chinese. Even if he is supposed to be mixed, there isn’t a reason for him to not have at least a little bit of an accent.
Overall, I can see why some people are concerned about the Deluxe Remake, but it’s definitely not “Woke” in any sense of the word.
It's literally changed so much of the game as things were considered problematic that sounds pretty woke to me. What's the point of remastering something from the past if your gonna change it, I prefer the message in the beginning explaining that some of the content may be offensive than outright changing the content cause it could offend people. This one in particular is kind of obvious, though, as from my understanding, a Chinese studio took part in remastering the game.

The original character design looks so much better. He was clearly insane and low IQ, but physically menacing. The new Larry is clean, fit, and sharp. It's a different character entirely. This is shameful to treat the original fanbase this way

I honestly prefer the character change. It fits more thematically in an ironic sense. Carlito's quest for revenge was against the "fat Americans". So having a sterotypical fat, American looking butcher there to churn him up into ground beef hits harder, lol.

Even by 2006 standards the original was always a bit of a Chinese stereotype. Considering japan and China dont have the best relationship its not suprising the developers chose to have him look and sound like that. I have no problem with the new version since it functions pretty much the exact same as the original but its too clean. The original felt grimey and dingy and sweaty.

I'll be honest. I heavily prefer the new version. He's not just some caricature now, and his new design, his rather clean appearance combined with the cleaned shop in comparison with the old reflects the man's reputation that has become his fixation, his obsession in the madness when he snapped, much like Adam.

Why people defend things of a fictional character using "real world" things...Is a Rated M game for Mature audiences we were ok with the original game but now that M turned into M for modern audiences. Are those audiences with us? The peak of players on Steam was close to 5k but now the average of players is reduced almost by half. Again...this game was mend to be played by adults...dogs are dogs...cats are cats. If China was the problem they have to use this 3D model for their version, you can't please 1% of players in order to bother the 99% rest. A change that nobody wanted. I won't be surprised at this point if Mai in SF6 is going to be "adjusted" for the not found modern audiences 😓😭

Honestly, this change doesn’t bother me at all, and the whole argument over his race is a big nothing burger. How the scene is presented, whether he looks too clean, the creep factor, his voice acting, how the boss fight plays out, and whatnot are all things that you can debate over. Those are subjective preferences. But if your biggest sticking point in this whole scene is that the guy is no longer an Asian or that this change makes the game "woke", then your priorities are in the wrong place.

The cutscene dialogue for new Larry is really terrible.
Instead of just remaking it, they had the exact same dialogue spoken which sounds very stiff and weird since I'm assuming that new Larry is American and English is his first language.

Interesting how they kept the tattoo in for the remake but as a logo for the company. Still though the original looks way better with how dirty and disgusting it looks compared to the remake
Controvertial opinion but I like the new one better.
The original Larry is obviously iconic, but the new Larry feels more like an actual butcher, not swanning around a mall in a sweaty t-shirt and wearing hygienic stuff.
More importantly, the entire point of the story is american greed, and it becomes ironic that while Carlito fought the industry to avenge his home and family, he nearly dies again to a crazed American butcher. I think it works better thematically than a scary chinese guy missing teeth.
