I traveled through the US in 1999 and coming from a British person there is no doubt in my mind that the “southern states” were the most genuine people I met, whether you like them or not they’re honest. When I was in New York, jersey and LA I have never met a bunch of smug, egotistical, self righteous, spoilt pricks in all my life.
Yeah, I’m from the South and moved to California. People I worked with would make fun of southerners in front of me, and when I tried to defend them, they would tell me that southerners aren’t “my” type of people. The condescension was incredible. It usually comes from a bunch of ignorant people who’ve never been to south and just believe all the stereotypes like everyone’s racist, poor, and dumb. They’re the dumb ones for thinking that.

My experience was excellent, the people were absolutely hospitable, the scenery was serene and pretty and I just fell in love with the culture and fascinating history of Mississippi. As a non American, Indian British man, go to Mississippi. It's a lovely state.

I’m 34 years old. I was born and raised in MS, and lived there until 2016 when I left for a my career. A couple of observations from this video. 1) This is not an accurate portrayal of MS. There are well educated, hard working people in MS. While people may look down on the state as poor and part of the south, what they miss is the genuine hospitality the people there have for one another. 2) While this video tries to show MS as the poorest state with nothing but racism and ignorance, they only interviewed white males. What about the other people from other walks of life?! As someone who has traveled the country and met people from various walks of life, I guarantee that you will find ignorant and racist people in each and every state. This video solidifies more that Bill Maher and his show is just a way to belittle people and doesn’t fully state all facts and perspectives.
@jamesstricklin4056 yes they are. The rich ones are like this too with just proper English and they are better at hiding their views but not that good. I know because I've been around them. Southerners have no idea how they appear and sound to others in the North and Midwest. The culture is stuck in a distant time.
You can find horrible people in every state to “represent” it. This show has a political/social agenda and they’re going to build their narrative even if it’s dishonest.
Having spent the first twenty years of my life in Mississippi, I can tell you that this video accurately depicts the very worst that this state has to offer, the bottom 5%. Mississippi isn't a state of wealth, nor will it ever be with the way the rest of the nation looks at us. Do most people who live here get to make a lot of money? No, but that only conditions the people here to appreciate more the things that they ARE able to have. It makes them a very grateful and hospitable people, and it makes them no less intelligent that the other forty-nine states.
@Cameron Broadway Okay which is weirder? Replying to a 1 year old comment, or that commenter from 1 year ago replying immediately? It doesn't really matter. Regardless, a lot's happened in a year, it fucking sucks here, avoid this state at all costs. If you wanna see an Elvis Museum, go see the one in fucking Tennessee. There some nice people here, but there are many more nice people literally everywhere else you go. Thank you sir, and have a nice day/afternoon/evening, depending on where you live. 💙
It makes them a very grateful and hospitable people, and it makes them no less intelligent that the other forty-nine states eh? Well, I'm a Christian and grateful for everything I have. But I have a college degree with honors from a university who's business school was ranked 8th in the top 10 in the country at the time. I've had post graduate study too. So what you're saying is THESE people are as intelligent as me eh? Hmmmmm..... And this is the bottom 5%? I always thought the bottom 5% were black sharecroppers living in shacks on someone else's land! And why ISN'T it a state of wealth? When Trent Lott was your senator, he kept getting all that money appropriated to build factories and plants down there! Where did all that money go? Plus, he got more homeland security money appropriated for Mississippi to protect cotton fields than states like New York and New Jersey who had the bridges, tunnels and ports to protect!

We may be the poorest state but we are number one when giving to charitable causes and don't forget that Mississippi had some of the first responder in NYC during 911. I know because I was a Mississippian living in NYC during that time. People need to know that we are good people and proud whether we are white, black or native Americans. Mississippians are real people who care. We may be poor but so rich in ways that other people will never understand.
They why do you consistently rank as one of the worst states for Non Religious People, People of Non Christian religions, Biracial Couples, Feminists, Immigrants, and LGBTQ people to live.
This documentary stinks. I am Brazilian, I lived about ten years in this state. Most people are incredible and welcoming. There is racism all over the world. Today I live in Rio de Janeiro and I see here in Brazil a lot more racism than in my time in Jackson city. Before the pandemic, I traveled to the United States every year, and whenever I can I go to this state, which is incredibly beautiful and has a great history.
President Lyndon B. Johnson once said, "If you can convince the lowest white man he's better than the best black man, he won't notice you're picking his pocket. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he'll empty his pockets for you."
As a Mississippian, I grew up in a area where African, Caucasian, Asian, Hispanic, Muslim, Jewish, and many other people lived and I grew up understanding the differences in people and how at the end of the day everyone is human, my grandmother always told me "never to judge people because of color but to acknowledge that we all bleed red" I don't know where racism happens in this state but if there are racist people here it's extremely ignorant yet rare
Your state continuously ranks as one of the worst states in the Nation for anyone that isn't White and Christian. B*gotry is not rare in Mississippi, it's very common and you're just a m*ron that doesn't know what they're talking about.
@@ethandollarhide7943 I guess that just depends on what town you go to. The town I was in has many different kinds people and different relegions in it. My point is that this state can only be racist depending on what area you go to, and I'm blessed to live in a town where there aren't any racist people residing in. If what I see and know from experience makes me a moron who doesn't know anything than the best thing I can tell you is go to places like Laurel or Hattisburg and see for yourself, looking on the internet instead of going to the towns I recommended will prove me right that this state isn't how it looks and how it only depends on what town you go to that can be toxic and my reason for saying why it's rare is because I never had an experience or seen someone have an experience of being judged because of color. Am I going to doubt that racism happens in this state? No, racism happens everywhere no matter where someone is at, we can't control that but the best thing we can do is love one another no matter who they are because it's better for us to do so, and I love you. There's good and bad people everywhere in the world, no matter where you're from or what the colour of your skin is. I actually did enjoy listening to a lot of the people here. They just expressed their opinions, and coming from England, I have heard Americans from the Deep South have great hospitality.
I lived in Natchez, and I never once saw racism in-person (again, in my presence), but I sure as hell saw it in Cincinnati and Southeastern Indiana. The biggest racists I ever saw were Hoosiers. The racism against Blacks was so extreme in the Indiana town I lived in that I would not allow any Black friends to come visit because of my fear that they'd be harassed. The South isn't all bad, and the North isn't all good.
If you are white, how would you identify it especially if it is subtle? That would be like asking Stevie Wonder to tell what colour shirt you are wearing!
I have lived in the state of Mississippi for eighty six years.Ninety nine percent of the white people I know are not like the ones you chose to speak for us.

I actually laughed watching this video because for every man they interviewed I could find ten white men to say the exact same thing! But whatever everyone has an opinion, just like an asshole.
Tyler Cole Jackson, the Memphis metro region, and some of the larger northeast and gulf coast towns are not that bad. Vicksburg, the Delta region, and most of the smaller towns are. I have been told many time that I was going to hell for my beliefs or lack thereof, and I even had a 10 year old try to invite me to a KKK rally.
Lmao love how they tried to act like there’s a correlation between poor states and conservative states. California was Republican when it grew to the #1 economy. Free market principles made America.
This is so dishonest. I'm a Mississippian, and I love how you only interview poor WHITE MEN, in a state that is majority female and 38% BLACK (the blackest state in the country per capita) and where only 13% of white people live in poverty (vs ~30% of black people, because systemic racism is a thing) and say this video is representative. By the way, how are you going to say we are the "most conservative state"? 43% of Mississippians voted for Obama in 2012; about 40% voted for Hillary; 48% voted for a Democrat for governor in a 2019, and 46% voted for a black Democrat (Mike Espy) for US Senate in 2018. But we're the "most conservative"? Are you kidding? Have you ever heard of West Virginia? Bill Maher, you're trash. Yeah, this was cherrypicking.
This is such a sad representation of Mississippi. You should be ashamed to claim that this is what all Mississippians are like. I grew up in Mississippi and it’s full of the most kind and gentle people around. You would be lucky to get to know the people in this great state.

For whatever reason I can't see the upload date, but as a Russian who lives in Norway and has lived in America before, specifically Texas for 7 years, Mississippi is far from the most conservative. There are many majority-black Democrat counties. It's a lovely state with great history and culture. This man definitely did cherry pick, Mississippi tends to be more conservative than some other states, but many people there are completely sane people who vote for the candidates they support in good faith. How can you claim 40-50% of a country has malicious intent just because they vote for a certain person? I'm not a huge fan of the current GOP and two party system, but I think the people of Mississippi politics aside are definitely some of the most down to earth and hospitable people I've met. This stereotyping of hard working Americans needs to stop.
Yes but white Mississippians are arguably the most conservative or at least up there, they have alot of black people who are majority democrat 40%+, yet the state still heavily votes conservative due to white Mississippians.

It's not about how hard they work. It's about how they treat others and Southerners are awful people when it comes to their treatment of others.
@@ethandollarhide7943 Well I’m sad to hear that that’s your experience, but it’s certainly not mine. Southerners are some of the most respectful and down to earth people I’ve met, they treat me much better than Norwegians do right now
@@yurippp634 Dude, Southern States consistently rank as the worst places in the United States for Non Religious People, People of Non Christian religions, Biracial Couples, Feminists, Men that are more Feminine than Masculine, Immigrants, and LGBTQ people to live. The South is a very bigoted place and their hospitality is just another word for being fake. You are living in one of the Real Greatest Nations on Earth. The United States is more like a Christian Theocracy because of this people. So Stop acting like you know more about the South than someone that has been trapped in it their entire life.
@@ethandollarhide7943 I’ve lived in Texas myself as an immigrant and at the time an agnostic and visited other southern states quite often, so an argument from authority isn’t particularly applicable here. Yes while Norway does on paper have higher living standards, I miss the higher salaries, lower taxes, quicker and more convenient and accessible (albeit expensive) healthcare system, etc. In Norway it is very depressing during the winter and the town in particular where I live has a suicide rate well above the American national average. “Christian theocracy” is just an irrelevant over exaggeration that I don’t find to be true at all, many countries in Europe including Norway have declared Christianity as its national religion, USA hasn’t. Also, in the USA, as soon as I learnt the language and grasped the different customs and values, everyone instantly saw me as an American, that is not the case in any other country. Here I’ve been told to learn the language before I move here (which I in fact did almost a year in advance) just for asking someone to repeat something for not speaking clearly. I’m not disputing that different people have different experiences at all, but neither should you
As someone who has never lived anywhere but the south... these viewpoints are certainly a minority. Perhaps they conducted all of these interviews in an extremely conservative county. But the plain truth is that even 'country boys' are unlikely to say things like this.
I'm not conservative nor Christian, and I've never run into anyone who has given me trouble for it.
As someone who has also never lived anywhere, but the South, these Viewpoints are how a majority of the people of the South are and you need to stop lying. You're just trying to make our p*thetic part of the Nation look good and Hospitable when in Reality, that's one of the biggest lies that has ever been told. You haven't run into anybody that didn't give you trouble not being a Conservative Christian because you didn't tell them you weren't a Conservative Christian. They assume that everyone is a Christian, they assume that everyone is conservative, they assume that everyone is Straight,, Etc. You're just a idi*tic 🤡 that has no idea what they're talking about and is contributing to all the prejudiced in the South by trying to cover it up. You're being just as R*cist, S*xist, H*mophobic, Tr*nsphobic, Etc. as they are.

These people were cherry picked for their poorness. Not to mention there are plenty of black people in Mississippi. Also there are younger forward thinking people as well as a fair share of rich people. The state is poor because of the low, sparse population and the fact that people would rather live on top of each other in california while farming in deserts close by
Oh, my gosh. That anyone would believe for a millisecond that this video wasn't jobbed to the hilt... :) Go on, have your day.

Of course!🙄
This is not a representation of mississippi. There are people seen in this video that are found in every state of the nation and in every country in the world.
It's accurate to how 99% of the South is.
The fact all the unreasonable hate and contempt towards Southerners comes from the side that claims to be "tolerant and welcoming" is absolutely ironic.
They just don't want to admit their own hypocrisy.
It's not " unreasonable hate" Prejudiced Theocrats should always be mocked.

I couldn't agree more. The video WAS grossly edited. Does anyone realize that Mississippi has produced Miss America's, accomplished actors, musicians, recording artists, politicians, scholars, scientists, and innovators of all imaginable kinds?
I was born and raised in Mississippi but I have never encountered people like the ones cherry picked in the video. It took visiting the hills in Tennessee with church groups to experience people of this caliber. What is the point of misrepresenting the entire state to this degree? It gives those who look down on an entire population of a state the false sense of superiority while helping them rationalize their own pathetic lives.
Bro, it's just the facts that the Southerner parts of this country including Mississippi are more Theocratic and more Prejudiced than the rest of the Country.
They are proud people. I like that in people. I am french Canadian and i love the southern accent. If i was American i would have loved to find me a wife with a deep southern accent, they are lovely and true.

The segment, to me, was interesting but I felt like they showed one demographic: old white men.
This is pretty ridiculous! I’ve lived in Mississippi my whole life and I’ve only seen a few people like this. Their is much more diversity of people than they show. Though there are lots of republicans there is also democrats and people the exact opposite of what they are showing!
