‘What if this is the best version’ part truly hurts

    Best scene from the movie.
“No, I mean, I just, I wish that you liked me.”
    “Of course I love you.”
    “But do you like me?”

1:06 Laurie played this perfectly. She tries to open the door and backtrack but doesn't because it finally hits her what Lady Bird meant.

Please explain what Lady Bird means.

@@TaakeItEasyy Obviously, I can only speculate as to Greta Gerwig's intent with that dialogue, since I didn't have any writing input on the movie xD
That being said, I think can take a pretty good guess. From mid-high school to just out of college, I struggled a lot with the insecurity of "what if this is the best I can do with my life?"
I wasn't a troublemaker, I got pretty good grades in school, there wasn't anything *wrong* with my life per se - but I still felt like I didn't quite have my shit together. And I didn't know if I was ever GOING to get my shit together. And... that was more terrifying than any specific worries about my future, like "what if I don't get a job right out of college?" or "am I going to be 30 before I even start getting comfortable with dating?"
So yeah. I think that's what Lady Bird is trying to convey here: the sense of worrying that the "bad" parts of your life or who you are as a person (whether those are internal or external factors) are never going to go away, or that you'll never find a healthy way to manage them.

@@iantkach6640 I really appreciate your detailed answer, thank you! This is an issue that we can relate to. Would you please also explain how she came to the name Lady Bird and what this could mean?

    • @iantkach6640
      @iantkach6640 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@TaakeItEasyy That part I can't really make a guess at, unfortunately. I know she chose the name "Lady Bird" for herself when she was auditioning for the play (or possibly earlier?), but I don't know what her reason for picking that name specifically was.

@@TaakeItEasyy The idea is that Lady Bird is trying to find her own identity as she is going to move out on her own very soon. She feels unseen by her parents, so, being her somewhat dramatic self, decides that she isn't going to stick to the name that they chose for her. They want her to be Christine, so she will be someone different. Someone that will attract people, be cool, and gain the acceptance of her true self that she so deeply wants. It's why at the end of the movie, she says to the guy at the party, "People will use the names their parents gave them, but they won't believe in God". Because she realizes that faiths and names and things like that should be things we get to choose. She's been trying so hard to create a cool, outsider persona and avoid being a boring suburban person that she misses out on creating real connections with the world around her. At the end of the movie, she realizes that her life at college is no different than her life at home, because she hasn't changed at all. So, she starts calling herself Christine again - because she is CHOOSING to connect with her loved ones instead of hiding in her "black sheep" persona.

laurie metcalf is so good in this. i feel like it's rare to see movies where a parent relationship actually feels authentic and believable, but these two totally do.

“[ lady bird] why can’t you say I look nice.
[mom] I thought you didn’t even care what I think
[lady bird] I still want you to think I look good.
[mom] ok. I’m sorry, I was telling you the truth. You want me to lie?
[lady bird] No. I mean. I just wish. I wish that you liked me.
[mom] of course I love you.
[lady bird] But do you like me?
[mom] “pauses for a moment” I want you to be the very best version of yourself that you can be.
[lady bird] what if this is the best version?
[mom] “looks at lady bird with a blank face”

Honestly, this is exactly what many parents think/wants for their child. When Laurie Metcalfe as Lady Bird’s mom just slightly dips her head - that’s such a great and funny moment. It’s a moment where she basically says, in equal measures, “you can do better” and, “I believe you are destined for greater things.” Equal measures of disapproval and encouragement. Passive aggressive. It reminds me of when my Mom said to me, “you got a heart of gold, but you’re gaining weight.” 😂

The context is stronger......Lady Bird, feels like her mother doesn't like her because of how they fight too much. The criticism is just another part of their conflict
