So I had to look up exactly what the superstructure was for as despite the wonderful high resolution footage nowhere on this video is this structure actually explained. It turns out it's absolutely fascinating so I guess I will do it.
It turns out the super structure is used to support the massive gas storage tank which rises and falls depending on how much gas is being stored or consumed. The function was described as telescopic which implies a solid structure as opposed to one that inflates like a balloon. That's pretty cool.

The correct name of these are GAS HOLDERS they are purely storage vessels and not meters as your name implies. All three gas holders in the footage are complete, the two vessels without columns are Spirally Guided gas holders, you can just make out the movable guide rails in the footage. The one with the superstructure is a column guided gas holder

The correct name is also "Gasometer" as the video title says. Either name applies to these items.
"A gas holder or gasholder, also known as a gasometer, is a large container in which natural gas or town gas is stored near atmospheric pressure at ambient temperatures. ... Typical volumes for large gas holders are about 50,000 cubic metres (1,800,000 cu ft), with 60 metres (200 ft) diameter structures."

@@Mr_Mz518 I disagree Mr Mzz. I am a retired gas engineer and associate member of the institution of gas engineers. The correct term for these vessels are Gas Holders. Gasometer refers to a measuring device whereas a Gas Holder is purely a storage vessel.

@@barmcake321 I can see what you mean and appreciate that. I just wonder why they seem to be refered to as Gasometers in most texts?

@@Mr_Mz518 I think it is the fact that the most common types are seen to rise and fall depending on the volume of gas being stored which has probably led to the term gasometer

Hi DrRobinJ, i love this video of yours!
I am just beginning to try animation and am working on an idea that involves a gasometer. Would it be ok if i used your video as a reference for drawing some of the frames?
    :)

Is there any gasometer’s in the UK that still rise now or are they all decommissioned?

@@Mechanicalrob There are several along Old Kent Road in Southwark, not sure if they are in use, but they are there.
