if he defended himself saying that he was on vacation and entitled to take it without having to worry about work, it wouldve been a better defense.
MPs just gave themselves a pay rise due to extra work caused by covid last year. WTF? Whilst I waited a year for cancer surgery and delays in other depts almost cost me my sight. Front line staff deserve and should be paid higher wages. Would you rather pay more tax to cover MPs wages or those that educate n medicate us?

I'd like to be able to be seen by a dentist instead of local hospital pulling the covid card backlog excuse, don't live in that big of a town, know fine well people have pulled this excuse so they can have an easier time doing next to nothing while still getting paid.
Russel is a fantastic "Boris Johnson to English" translator.
BoJo is a great example of the class of grifters, like JRM or Jordan Peterson, who use the colloquial symbology of what laypeople heuristically use to determine intelligence and education to make their laughable tosh seem impenetrable and therefore sophisticated. They're the kid on the playground who realized other kids would think them smart if they used big words where little ones would suffice.
It's a very old trick, relying principally on the fact that people are reticent to admit genuine ignorance (although there's really no shame in it) by revealing that they don't grasp a concept and asking for clarification. Requests for clarity always bamboozle charlatans, because it's something they, by definition, cannot provide.

One thing that I chose to be sworn in on if I ever made it to a political position was the Denver public libraries audiobook copy of lioness rampant by Tamora Priece. Because it was my favorite audiobook and the first audiobook that I ever got to listen to as a dyslexic girl

The Ukrainian president proved you wrong on people not needing comedians in hard times. Also, I was very grateful for comedians during lockdown. Granted, not comedic politicians, but yes we do need comedians in a crisis

Also, in my experience, comedians often seem to be the most intelligent, progressive, humble, self-reflected and empathetic of people (except the ones that simply can't make a joke without shitting on others), so that's the kind of people you'd want around in any case. And laughter in hard times is priceless.
Boris is an incompetent clown in a crisis (and on any other day) - and a corrupt politician...well, also on any day.
Zelensky used to be a Comedian and has become a politician who really stepped up in times of crisis.

I doubt he's doing one liners as he shoots invading Russians. The difference between Zelensky and Johnson couldn't be plainer. One rose to the occasion and is attempting to save his country, the other sank to the depths of Tory sleaze, taking his country with him, and thinks it's all just a humorous chapter in his internal life story.
I wonder which country should be considered a global presence now? A large majority of the world is watching with admiration how the Ukrainians are handling the invasion. They are paying attention to Ukrainian needs and pleas and largely acting in that country's best interests. And off to the side, facing the wrong way, stands Johnson, the UK's mouthpiece. Mumbling about how it's so hard to sanction aggressors, they don't like it.
There is a Russian connection between the disasters befalling the UK and Ukraine, the whole world can see it Only one of the two countries seems to be doing much about it.
It's a fair point, but people aren't turning to Zelensky for his comedic skills in this period. Just because he was a professional comedian (also has a law degree) doesn't mean everything he does is comedy.
And while comedians are helpful in processing a crisis, nobody's asking for one of Stephen Colbert's (love him!) razor-sharp monologues in lieu of, say, cardiac surgery, hilarious and incisive as said monologues may be.
That sign language interpreter should have just signed "I have no idea what this bozo is saying, I think we need to contact his carers because he is behaving like he has dementia and needs to be in an old folks' home."
When Russell translated that one part, what I was hearing come out of BoJo's mouth made more sense, and I was hearing what I imagine drunk Dr. Seuss having a stroke would sound like.

It always makes me laugh that foreigners know more about American law than Americans who should know better.
I blame the state of American schools.
Right now, they're trying to ban the teaching of nearly all American history, quite a lot of world history, and _the entirety of WWII history_ to avoid upsetting the white supremacists & conspiracy theorists.
It's insane.
Because Americans are taught that they're the best and everything else is irrelevant

I feel that MPs should be a fair representation of society BUT that the ones who make it to the Cabinet, by law, should be qualified in the subject they are addressing, such as; Minister for Health… senior doctor or surgeon or nurse, minister for Transport… should be an infrastructure professional or logistics person. Chancellor of the Exchequer… a senior financial accountant! Not Dave from down the road who worked at Costco for 5 minutes during his gap year, nor anyone who went to Eton.
LOL, I see people online going on about the entitlement of the artist formally known as Prince (Harry). They don't understand....he went to Eton.
The difficulty is who decides what qualifications are sufficient. Currently ministers are supposed to know what they are doing, as decided by the government and primarily the Prime Minister. They will generally have ministerial experience, but often political factors are deemed more important than experience in the specific subject of their department. The theory is that the civil servants provide that expertese, the minister just has to give them direction.
If its not the elected government that decides if someone can be a minister then someone else must hold that power. Civil servants? Judges? House of Lords? If power is abused by an elected official the people can vote them out. If its abused by an unellected person it can be a much more permanent problem.
A Health Secretary does NOT need to understand eg how cancer treatments work!
They need to know how to reduce waiting list times!!
