Melchizedek came with one purpose, which is to bless Abraham. Jesus came to preach the word to people, save the lost, set the captives free etc. In all these Jesus/Melchizedek never talked about tithing because that was not the purpose of his coming. So Abraham opted to pay tithe to Melchizedek.
Tithing is by faith. First, the first time a person paid tithe there was no law for a person to pay tithes. When Abraham paid tithe of all, there was no tithe laws. So out of Faith Abraham paid tithe of all. Jacob also paid tithe yet there was no law for a person to pay tithes. Today we can also pay tithes even there is no statement in the new testament to do so. We're Abraham seed and we can follow his faith steps. One can say, for example, if God save me by giving me His Spirit, I will pay tithes of all. This is faith by the person who made the pledge. We are not paying tithes because it is a law but because of our faith that God will bless us. Having said this I don't believe in any preacher who says tithes are not for Christians.
