quincy endicott and margueritte grey were buried next to each other in the cemetery too. to the right of quincy’s headstone you can see the period-accurate 1700s style unnamed skull headstone, which would have been placed during the same time that the french rococo style decor was gaining popularity. their mansions are connected to each other in the unknown because their burial plots are connected. furthering the idea that the unknown is a symbol for the afterlife/purgatory.
The Unknown is not purgatory, it's an real and physical dimension they went to and the Beast rules the woods and followed them because he's the antagonist and not Satan himself, the Beast is just a demon.
i think greg is good at navigating the unknown because of both his childhood innocence and because he does deep down have somewhat of a recollection of it. its often said that very young children have one foot in the spirit world, and also are more likely to remember details about their past lives. i think the unknown is a purgatory that people in over the garden wall are then literally or figuratively reborn from if they can overcome their flaws and purify their souls, depending on if they enter truly dead or not.
I love the idea of The Unknown being purgatory and I actually thought the show’s creators meant for this. One episode in particular that set this idea is the Potsfield episode. When Wirt bumps into the girl pumpkin/skeleton she doesn’t think he’s not suppose to be there just that he was too early. (Not decomposed yet). Also on the last episode where the woodsmen gets to see his daughter is when I believe he was finally able to pass over and finally reunite with her. Her being able to pass over because she didn’t hold any ill will towards her father and had no regrets where her father had to stay in The Unknown due to the fact that he couldn’t accept that she was gone and was duty bound to the Beast. I love this show so much and always watch it in the fall seasons at least twice ❤️🥰
Wrong, the Unknown is not Purgatory it's a physical dimension which the Beast rules and Wirt and Greg physically go there through the portal in the lake they fall into.
No, Anna never died because she ran away from the Beast before she would be harmed. The Woodsman never went home because he couldn't stand seeing his daughter's things and he thought he lost her.
The Beast literally says that, "All who perish here become trees for the lantern." Which means that the Edelwood trees are made from dead people not just children.
@@Super50ldier this is a really interesting way to interpret the show that I didn’t think of , but it still makes sense with the lake being a portal and Anna not dying but actually escaping the beast. I’m super curious to what you think the people within the tavern are with regarding your theory! Are they toys made into npcs made by the beast? Or are they lost souls as well? Does that mean that all the characters in the unknown are lost souls or just other members of this dimension along side with the beast? Really love your theory!
I saw somewhere that someone had a theory similar to the “Greg has been to The Unknown before” one, but even stranger! In short; in the Cloud City episode, Greg’s wish to the cloud queen was basically to go back in time and repeat their experience in The Unknown. It’s suggested that a “previous” experience had mistakes and perhaps they weren’t able to help everyone. Greg wished to go back, and knew what to do this time; hence why he is so calm and carefree about almost everything in the version of events we see. Seems like a weird theory to me, but thought I’d share it anyways.
I have the OtGW artbook, and while it states in there that they wanted the turtles and their meaning to be somewhat obscured, the book also calls Auntie Whispers a "sin eater" of sorts, which is interesting given that she collects and eats the black turtles. If you look closely at her, her mouth and teeth are black, and her teeth are also...not in the best condition. So it seems like while her task is important, it's also taking a physical toll on her.
This is probably one of my favorite cartoon network shows that they've ever made. I remember when it first came out I saw the name of the show thrown around on youtube and wanted to watch it but never got around to it. Last year I decided to give it a go and I watched it after 6 years. I'm so glad I never watched it when it first aired because I would've been too young to truly appreciate the entirety of the show. This show truly gives you a new perspective on life and I wish they would make more shows like it.
I never see anyone bring it up in these discussions, but the Beast's source of power is a lantern; the name Lucifer literally means "light bearer." You do the math.
Part of the reason I love this animation so much is because how well they nailed the New England setting. I've lived in a relatively rural part of New England for most of my life and the overall feel of the show just reminds me so much of autumns of years past.
The backstory on Fred the horse is kind of interesting to me. Especially when he tells the judge about the highway man. The story seems comical (as y'know, talking horse), but it is also interesting in the sense that in some states in the U.S. there is an old law where horses can act as legitimate witnesses to crimes. Granted I'm not sure how that law actually works in court as it has probably never been used since cars became common. Even if it was mere coincidence, it's still a neat one when you know weird old timey laws.
Also, my favorite voice actor was the guy who did Fred the Horse... "I wanna steal..." Af for the turtles, I always saw them as the embodiment of "danger" or "evil," and when Auntie Whispers eats them, she's keeping Lorna safe from the danger (which is why her teeth have rotted away - the evil has rotted her teeth). When they infest a living creature, the creature turns evil, and characters throughout the series are always trying to keep the danger/evil away by getting rid of the turtles. I'm very open to being wrong, though.
I think the thing about Greg being familiar with the unknown makes sense if you think about reincarnation. Babies could be seen as souls from heaven, hell or purgatory that just got reincarnated so it would make sense why a child would be more familiar with the unknown. It's something they've more recently experienced compared to a teenager or adult.
I'm personally hesitant to equate the Beast with Satan, but perhaps it's just a personal thing (I really don't like the balck/white morality of good/evil). I more see him as the personafication of decay, entropy, a force of nature that we all fight against. This series is very meaningful to me, I often remember it in my darker moments. The Beast's song especially: "Sorrow and pain is easily forgotten, if you submit to the soil of the earth" - so reassuring and comforting, but in those moments of darkness, it helps me to remember, that I should not fight for this comfort, but against it.
The Beast being a wendigo makes sense, but I do want to point out that wendigo don't have antlers in the original Algonquin legends. That was made up by Algernon Blackwood, who was not Indigenous
How do you guys feel about the ruler of cloud city being the Beast? Haven't seen anyone say anything about it. But when Greg is talking with the Beast the Beast says "we had an agreement didnt we?" After Greg talks with the ruler of Cloud City.
I think they survived because they were being “chased” by the police and probably the officers saw them climb the wall and they went around the wall or climbed it and saw them fall in the water, or the train operator saw two kids fall in the water and notified someone to go check on them since he can’t stop the train to go save two kids. As for their journey in the unknown, I think their souls did go there but that was from the time they first became unconscious to waking up in the hospital. There is a saying that our souls leave our bodies when we sleep and maybe they go to other universe in other bodies and that’s our dreams. That’s what I like to believe.
I remember avoiding spoilers for this show like the plague, because I had a feeling it would be something special when I first learned of it and I wanted to go in as blind as possible. Pretty much the only things I knew going in were the names of the brothers and the bird, the lost-in-the-woods aspect, that there was an antagonist called The Beast, and that Elijah Wood was involved.
Another thing that shows the inspiration of Americana, and specially the location being New England is the music. Specifically in Pottsfield, the music they are singing is being sang in the Scared Harp style, and was clearly written in that style too. If you listen to the full version, they even do the Sacred Harp solfege before. All this to say, is that this music originated in New England and is prominent in early North American tradition. It still remains popular there as well as the South. (But there are even groups on the West coast that get together to sing this music.) Great video!
This show came out on my birthday, and I distinctly remember when it came out and hearing the opening song and falling in love with everything this show had to offer, and as I rewatch it now as a young adult who adores storytelling and film, this is without a doubt one of the best animated shows I’ve ever seen.
i found the show through the songs, the blasting company was recommended to me on spotify and i loved the songs found out they were from a show that i ignored as a kid lol
8:55 I always thought about the fact the Fred the talking horse liked stealing showing by how he was convincing others to steal items from Quincy Endicott's Mansion. Yes almost all of them were gonna try to steal but only 2 pennies while fred got lost and tried to take other stuff. Him being a horse partnered with the fact that he likes stealing made it a perfect opportunity for the Highway Man
Me and my sister watched Over The Garden Wall all the way through for the first time today, i was not disappointed. Greatest series I’ve seen in a very long time.
The thing about the Beast being a Wendigo is that the Wendigo isn't actually a big werewolf-deer monster. In actual Anishinaabe folklore, it's an emaciated humanoid, sometimes even a giant made out of ice. The Beast doesn't exactly match that description
22:40 I wonder if Greg is used to the unknown because (maybe, I have no idea but I'm guessing lol) the Unknown isn't just a place for dead souls to go to or if it is, the only places to go to aren't just heaven or hell? Maybe since Greg is young he still kind of remembers being reincarnated or something and the unknown seems a bit more familiar to him
23:18 In Japanese folklore it’s said that when children are born they’re closer to the spiritual realm and not fully on our side (physical word) and that each first for them makes them more and more human (first hair brush teeth brush nap, eating) so maybe that’s why Greg had more hindsight
I almost screamed when I got recommended this video, I love the series so much! I got my sister into wanting to watch it with the premise "Think of Gravity Falls, but not as many characters or episodes". She also loves the series now-
No. This show isn't religious in the slightest. I've seen bloggers and other youtubers drawing parallels between Dante's Inferno and OTGW and they miss the mark completely. There is no deep, meaningful message beyond what's presented in the show. It's a story about two boys caught in a journey between life and death. The Beast is a folklore character much like east England's Lantern Man or Russia's Baba Yaga. He lures souls into the woods and when they're lost and have given up hope, claims them in the forest. It's a classic folklore tale inspired by early American settlers where their greatest threat wasn't religious in nature -- it was nature itself.
@@theaggressivesalesman2424 The Divine Comedy references are definitely intentional, I am not saying that the show is religious in nature nor do I know where you got the idea that that was what I was implying. If the Inferno references are as obvious as they are in the show it is safe to assume that the writers would take inspiration from one aspect of the poem, When Greg and Wurt go deeper into the unknown they end up in a snowy part of the woods which is very likely a reference to Inferno where Dante and Virgil go to the ninth circle of hell, a frozen lake. Dante and virgil see the devilin that place, similar to how Greg and Wurt end up finding the beast in the snowy place.
I'm not saying it is not inspired by American folklore too, because it is. But the decision to call the creature who scouts for souls in the deepest part of the unknown "The Beast" is very deliberate.
I'm friends with the brazilian voice actor for Greg! Mattheus se você tá lendo isso agora, desculpa por te encher o saco pra cantar batatas e melado o tempo todo kkkk
The Highwayman's dancing is based on Cab Calloway's appearances in old Betty Boop cartoons. He really did dance Like That, they rotoscoped him in and it's rad as hell. Also the old Black Train is a fairly old concept in americana, said to take lost souls to the afterlife. Just thought that worth mentioning since it got its own mention on the iceberg!
I love this video, i just rewatched OTGW, and all the little details you brought up make it such a better story! So well researched, but i was getting a little lost during the transitions between topics. Maybe including the graphic of the iceburg to show which layer youre moving to? Or having other text over the images to spell out what youll be expanding on next would help my ADHD brain create segments. 💕 looking forward to more!!
In the artbook of over the garden wall it's mentioned that Auntie whispers actively fights the evil of the beast by eating the turtles but got corrupted (only physically though).
To do with the after life theory: long story short I completely agree… if you listen to the song *Old Black Train* which plays in the pre penultimate episode where Greg and Wirt fall on the rail way tracks and first “enter” the unknown, the entire song is about passing into death. You don’t need a ticket it’ll take you in its time, where it goes you can’t come back from, and most importantly *come on now young stranger, you were someone’s son, why are you at this depot, it’s not where you belong*. Essentially the song sums up the entirety of the theory, they weren’t meant to die that day but they were on the ,quote on quote, “black train” passing through to death.
This is my favorite show of all time! As for my favorite voice actor, there is no one more perfect for the role than Elijah Wood. I also love Chris Isaac and his song Patient is the Night is excellent and gets stuck in my head often
Today I watched this mini series for the first time on CN's youtube channel. It's absolutely beautiful. I live in the tropics, where autumn and Halloween are pretty much nonexistent, but there's something about the show that speaks to me.
I'm surprised the third sister didn't come up. In Adelaide's house, one of the wall tapestries depicts three female figures standing side by side. It's believed that one is Adelaide, one is Auntie Whispers, while the third figure remains unknown. I've heard two theories about who the third figure is: Mrs. Daniels, the lady who Greg raked leaves for, or the Queen of the Clouds. Another thing I was expecting to hear about were the early episode drafts from the series' pitch bible that were scrapped. For example, Wirt and Greg were originally going to cross paths with a character who carved dice out of children's bones. There was originally going to be 18 episodes, so that's why the concepts got cut (and also probably because that would've been way too dark).
The song "Potatoes and Molasses" is probably banned in North Korea because of the famine in the 1990s. North Korea actually has a song called "Potato Pride" that was part of their incentive/propaganda program.
I really like the interpretation of the black turtles, the witch, and Adalaide. I always thought it was just a simple reference to Spirited Away (while it could be both). Like the witch sisters, with one being good (Auntie Whispers, Zeniba), and the other being malicious (Adalaide, Yubaba) and the black turtles were similar to the little black, slime bug that kept Haku under Yubaba's control.
another theory on this show is Greg's wish. most people initially believed Greg's wish was to take Wirt's place in becoming an Adelwood tree. another theory on this is that Greg wished to go back for a do-over starting in episode 1. there's a great video on this here on youtube, my apologies for forgetting the name. It would explain how Greg had an intuition for the unknown and how things would play out.
The two pennies to get on the ferry gives even more credence to the afterlife theory. In a lot of cultures, two coins are placed over the eyes of the deceased. This is thought to originate from the Greek obols that would be used to pay the ferryman for passage across the river Styx in the underworld. Every detail of this show is so well thought out!
I think the what's her bucket was actually collecting, cooking, and eating the Turtles to limit the beasts influence. At the end of the episode she's actually a good person whose trying to keep her sister from eating people. Also the beast has the same eyes as the dog creature that ate the Turtle and became a black wolf lookalike.
To the last theory about Greg visiting the unknown, idk about him having visited the unknown before the events of the show, but in the comics that they released, Greg and Wirt end up revisiting parts of the unkown in their dreams! And Greg is particularly aware about traveling to and from the unknown
The Highway Man's dance reminds me a lot of the dance scene in that old Betty Boop cartoon with Cab Calloway rotoscoped as a dancing, singing walrus. Additionally, the dog's form with huge eyes reminds me of old illustrations of The Tinderbox by Hans Christian Anderson.
The original idea of over the garden wall kind of reminds me to infinity train, another Cartoon Network miniseries with the concept of a train that works like therapy, it is a really good show and kind of reminds me to over the garden wall, not because of the vibe or story but because of the dark topics and scenes the show involves.
Man Elijah Wood is such a treasure of an actor. He's passionate about his work, and amazingly humble too. He clearly chooses his roles carefully based on roles he WANTS to do, not just because he wants the money. Awesome guy.
20:53 sorry if someone else has said this already but i interpreted the "epilogue" as the clips shown of the characters the brothers met along the way having their own happy endings. (spoilers lol) the woodsman and his daughter reunite, lorna and auntie whispers are happy, ms. langtree and her husband are together again, etc. by that idea, if they were all dead and caught in purgatory because of issues they needed to overcome, now that they have overcome them they get to have their versions of heaven, which is a kinda lovely thought imo
13:39 Another very minor thing, in The Inferno, Beatrice acts as a sort of holy figure to bless and guide Dante along with Virgil. In my opinion, Beatrice doesn't represent Virgil at all, Greg does. What leads me to think this is the very close, almost brother-like bond that Dante and Virgil form (from my reading into it, at least). Another clue is Beatrice being a bird, who floats above the two like an angel, making me think she's not Virgil. (In the book, if my memory doesn't fail me, Beatrice didn't really know Dante in life and was just his lil crush, so that may explain Beatrice acting distant to Wirt? But that also doesn't explain Wirt acting in the same manner... hm) Idk, I haven't watched the whole theory and I'm very half-awake, so feel free to call me out on this lmao Edit: Oopsoopsoops big dumb time, I forgot Sarah existed, who I agree is Beatrice. Idk what's up with bird-Beatrice though 🙃 Maybe they're both Beatrice-like characters, Sarah being the living Beatrice and bird-Beatrice being the heavenly Beatrice? I am very tired and confused
23:37 also, i hadn't realized, but that scene where Wirt is in laying in the bed while Sara is sitting, parallels almost perfectly with the scene in "Submarine" where Oliver is laying in bed while Jordana is sitting by his side
Nice man I was looking for something good to watch, perfect timing I’ve been watching all your content and I’m stoked that your still pushing out entertaining stuff man
The dog was starving and looking for it’s family. Greg put the candy on the turtle. Then the dog saw the candy and ate the turtle. Which corrupted him. And he was following the candy and also recognized his home and went to it aswell. So when he spit out the turtle he turned back to normal

The people in the Unknown don't go to Heaven because the Unknown is a physical place they live in.

So it seems like while her task is important, it's also taking a physical toll on her.
her black teeth always scared me
This is probably one of my favorite cartoon network shows that they've ever made.
Woah really??? That’s crazy
Huh. I never thought of it that way
@@bluxcid1620 Haha, I'm definitely not sure about this theory! :D

Greg could actually be twelve years old since Raph from Transformers Prime looked like a child but he was twelve.

I think Over The Garden Wall is a masterpiece
How do you guys feel about the ruler of cloud city being the Beast? Haven't seen anyone say anything about it. But when Greg is talking with the Beast the Beast says "we had an agreement didnt we?" After Greg talks with the ruler of Cloud City.

@@averyscott9467 thats what i thought
And the little angels had red devil horned looking hair
The Queen of the Clouds is not the Beast, she's knew that the Beast claimed Wirt's soul so Greg sacrificed himself to the Beast to save his brother.

The thing about the Beast being a Wendigo is that the Wendigo isn't actually a big werewolf-deer monster. In actual Anishinaabe folklore, it's an emaciated humanoid, sometimes even a giant made out of ice. The Beast doesn't exactly match that description
Weirdly enough the Beast resembles a Leshy a lot more, exept that's a creture from Slavic mythology.
22:40 I wonder if Greg is used to the unknown because (maybe, I have no idea but I'm guessing lol) the Unknown isn't just a place for dead souls to go to or if it is, the only places to go to aren't just heaven or hell? 23:18 In Japanese folklore it’s said that when children are born they’re closer to the spiritual realm and not fully on our side (physical word) and that each first for them makes them more and more human (first hair brush teeth brush nap, eating) so maybe that’s why Greg had more hindsight

Since in the end it was revealed that the whole story was but a dream, i always thought the beast represented death and how it chased Wirt and Greg

Tome of the Unknown. A Tome is a thick book...
Wirt: "Fred is a talking horse, he can do what he wants."
Fred: "I wanna steal."
There was originally going to be 18 episodes, so that's why the concepts got cut (and also probably because that would've been way too dark).
right!! the three sisters thing should definitely be on the list
I convinced my 7 year old brother to be Greg this year for Halloween so I can be Wirt and I am so excited! I love this show
How did the costume go?
The song "Potatoes and Molasses" is probably banned in North Korea because of the famine in the 1990s. North Korea actually has a song called "Potato Pride" that was part of their incentive/propaganda program.
Interesting thank you
I really like the interpretation of the black turtles, the witch, and Adalaide.
What if you renamed yourself as Cocktor Skipper? That would be cool, I think.

Everyone saying that Wirt looks like an "animal crossing villager" yet blatantly ignoring the parallels between Wirt and Snufkin from Moomin.
Holy shit your right
Two pennies for a ferry, much like how you would need two coins to ride the boat in the underworld in greek mythology...

I feel like with how Greg acts I could see him having a near-death experience once before
Man Elijah Wood is such a treasure of an actor. He's passionate about his work, and amazingly humble too. He clearly chooses his roles carefully based on roles he WANTS to do, not just because he wants the money. Awesome guy.
Sooooo we're not even gonna mention the "the unknown is the afterlife, but not (just) for people, but for stories" theory?
20:53 sorry if someone else has said this already but i interpreted the "epilogue" as the clips shown of the characters the brothers met along the way having their own happy endings. (spoilers lol) the woodsman and his daughter reunite, lorna and auntie whispers are happy, ms. langtree and her husband are together again, etc. by that idea, if they were all dead and caught in purgatory because of issues they needed to overcome, now that they have overcome them they get to have their versions of heaven, which is a kinda lovely thought imo
Over the Garden Wall... in this day and age?? On my feed?? Sign me up.
Bless you, Doktor Skipper.
I'm at work, I'll watch this tonight!
But that also doesn't explain Wirt acting in the same manner... hm) Idk, I haven't watched the whole theory and I'm very half-awake, so feel free to call me out on this lmao
Edit: Oopsoopsoops big dumb time, I forgot Sarah existed, who I agree is Beatrice. Idk what's up with bird-Beatrice though 🙃 Maybe they're both Beatrice-like characters, Sarah being the living Beatrice and bird-Beatrice being the heavenly Beatrice? I am very tired and confused
