My grandfather was Ham Hamilton, and I haven't seen this cartoon in over 45 years! Thank you! The animators were hired by Mintz in an effort to "buy" the Disney studio. Ham had bought Walt a pair of shoes for the trip to New York, because he needed them and really believed Walt would see the light (money). Nope. Ham's 2nd child was due (my Dad) and Mintz's offers were generous. My grandma said Walt was very angry but continued to hire Ham off and on over the next decade or so. Lauri
Aw this is just as classic and cute as Mickey. Total Disney stuff I love the way everything moves and draws your eye in. The magic of character, and the expression on these critters is something that you just don't see today. Oswald is the original black and white toon star. And by far the coolest in thing happening in vintage look back today!
i love in epic mickey when you have your back towards oswald, he starts making faces at you and when you look at him, he puts his hands behind his back and starts innocently whislting
Look what Universal pictures did to a character with so much potential, they thought taking him off Disney would be a good move but they destroyed him and everyone forgot he even existed. I think its wonderful that he's back in todays era with a while part to play in our lives.
I have heard of Oswald but never tried to see his cartoons until now. This helps prove my theory that classic cartoons are STILL the best and they will be until the end of time.
Of note (if it hasn't been already): Little Lee Harvey Oswald (yes, THAT Oswald) was nicknamed "Ozzie" after this rabbit - this character was popular in the 50's as well. Lee entered the Marines in 1956, and many of his buddies noted his small frame and generally cynical or mischievous nature, hence referencing and attributing Oswald the Rabbit to poor little Lee. : D
Excellent music! Silent films, which were originally shown with live accompaniment, rarely receive this kind of treatment when they're released to DVD. I'll bet the soundtrack is from the 1931 sound-era re-release.
this is the day. you know how old people say"back in the day", this is that day. personally, I think Walt Disney would be disgusted by all the crap they plaster his name on these days.
This is a fine example of animation when, back then, it was a pioneering feat much along the lines of Toy Story today. Well done on finding this little gem!
I read in a biography about Walt Disney that after Disney was making these films for a while, Mintz "stole" Oswald from Disney because Oswald was not copyrighted. Walt Disney then came up with Mickey, who is very similar to Oswald in some photos.
With all due respect to Disney, Iwerks and everyone who worked hard on this...what a difference a year makes! Not because of the fallout between Disney and Universal, but because cartoons in general had become much more articulate and well designed compared to before. And while I respect these early cartoons, I have to say anything before 1927 is difficult to watch nowadays, whereas I can still get a kick out of almost anything post-1932.
Very entertaining! I have recently gained a new respect for animators as a whole, and I'm really impressed at all the work that went into this thing. And I'm not gonna lie- that was probably the safest trolley track I've ever seen! ;)
I learned this about Oswald- Oswald the Lucky Rabbit was "Kidnapped" in 1928 because ,I think, he didn't have it copyrighted or something and someone took it from Walt. So soon after Walt drew up something like a mouse called Mortimer Mouse and his wife, Lilly said "Mortimer" That's a funny name for a mouse." They she said, "How about Mickey." And the rest is history.
The cartoon you're referring to is called Christmas Comes But Once A Year - 1934, starring Grampy from Betty Boop. I'm certain it's on youtube somewhere.
"I was here FIRST! The fame was meant to be mine! Father loved me, I KNOW he did..." "Oswald...father's dead. He's been dead for years." "You filthy LIAR!"
i vaguely remember watching this 3-4 yrs ago but didn't knew it was Walt's first creation i thought: ''who is he and why don't i know him he's made by Disney''. After that i forgot about Oswald until epic mickey and then i watched trolley troubles again, but now i know all about Oswald he's awesome!
I have some news to tell you guys, In that new game, Epic Mickey, the Real Villian is actually the Phantom Blot, who also wants to get his revenge also not just Oswald here. Also, in that game, your also getting Oswald to trust you again so that he can come out of hiding. So yeah, it looks great. I read it on the Game Informer website.
I started seeing Oswald shirts in Disneyland a few days back and learned about him from various folks. They should really bring him back "Mouse Works" style...
@MegGriffin45 I think the case was more that Walt was working for Charles Mintz, so his boss owned the rights to any ideas Walt came up with under his employment. But yeah, Walt was crushed that his creation was taken from him.
I love how the streetcar has both an overhead electric pickup (and therefore electric motors) as well as a manual ignition crank, suggesting a gasoline engine.
@Twilight14Vampire Steamboat Willie was not the first cartoon with sound. There were others released before that one that contained sound, but the audio and video did not play in sync. Steamboat Willie was the first cartoon where the audio played where it was supposed to in relation to what was being shown. Also, Steamboat Willie was not the first Mickey Mouse cartoon- the short called Plane Crazy was.
I heard that disney was trying to go back to there roots by returning mickey Mouse in a game. Which will bring back Oswald as well, I'm surprise to hear that since Walt Disney made Oswald, Disney and company explain that Mickey and Oswald are somewhat half-brothers. Though i'm getting into classic toons from 1925-2000, that is.
@Robertjblais he drew them anyway... But he was hired by disney for disney under Disney's specifications. Disney named and gave them the personality. He wrote the script of what they do and when they do it. They are Disney's creations though, but also Ub's. Like swarlock said, it was a joint creation. (but to be more exact, Mrs. Disney had actually helped named Mickey, as Disney originally wanted Mortimer to be his name, but she convinced him to change it)
@tacosizgood Makes sense given his background, he was seperated from his father (Walt Disney), who went on to 'replace' him with Mickey, who became far more famous than Oswald ever was. That'd piss me off, having a 'brother' who replaced me in every way and was more successful than I could ever hope to be.
Imagine if instead of Mickey today, we had Oswald. Hmm...... "Oswald Rabbit's Playhouse"? I'm kind of glad Oswald didn't make it to the present, now that I think of it.
I vote for an Oswald trolley ride at Disney World.
My grandfather was Ham Hamilton, and I haven't seen this cartoon in over 45 years! Thank you! The animators were hired by Mintz in an effort to "buy" the Disney studio. how funny he kissed his own rabit foot for good luck. love the scene with the trolly getting wide and thin to keep on the track. very funy toon

It's so sad how Disney got cheated out of Oswald.
I LOVE OSWALD!!!! Best disney character ever created!!!
oswald the lucky rabbit is one of my favorite walt disney charecters
i love in epic mickey when you have your back towards oswald, he starts making faces at you and when you look at him, he puts his hands behind his back and starts innocently whislting
I love the soundtrack.
What an amazing character, I can't imagine why he was forgotten.
Look what Universal pictures did to a character with so much potential, they thought taking him off Disney would be a good move but they destroyed him and everyone forgot he even existed. I think its wonderful that he's back in todays era with a while part to play in our lives.

All I want to know is how Oswald had kids with a cat. Unless they aren't hers . . .
Sure is better than the "Shake it Up" and "Austin & Ally" shit we get these days.
how many people know oswald through epic mickey
This is amazing! I love that classic animation!
Of note (if it hasn't been already): Little Lee Harvey Oswald (yes, THAT Oswald) was nicknamed "Ozzie" after this rabbit - this character was popular in the 50's as well. Back when trains were made of rubber
Man, I'm glad Disney got Oswald back. I'd like to see him get some well deserved acclaim nowadays.
this sounds silly put someone should do a cover of this song. its catchy
What a great cartoon for the time! @ Wonderful Jazz Sountrack...goes with the action perfectly!
Thanks for posting this. I've been wanting to see one of these since I first heard about him.
Oswald was one of the first cartoons I saw on TV as a toddler. Ub Iwerks' "Flip The Frog" was the other that I remember as if it were yesterday.
i think mickey was sketched as an idea in '25, but ozzy here was '27, and thats when they put alice comedies to an end
Excellent music! Silent films, which were originally shown with live accompaniment, rarely receive this kind of treatment when they're released to DVD. I'll bet the soundtrack is from the 1931 sound-era re-release.
THANK YOU FOR UPLOADING THIS!!! You rock! Omg this is an awesome forgotten piece of history!
this is the day. you know how old people say"back in the day", this is that day. personally, I think Walt Disney would be disgusted by all the crap they plaster his name on these days.
His taking off his own foot for luck was inspired. Thank you!

1:19 OSWALD...PAWNCH!!! BD
I see that the bad guy, Charles Muntz in the disney film 'Up' is based on Charles Mintz.
That'll teach him.
This was so fun to watch. I love old cartoons, there's nothing like them today. I'm really glad we can see a lot of the, on TH-cam!!
Oh dear Oswald, it's a real shame that many of us didn't know of your greatness untill now. But to be fair, many of us weren't alive in the 20s.
I liked the part when he was just dumping people out while he was going over the hills.
With all due respect to Disney, Iwerks and everyone who worked hard on this...what a difference a year makes!

another cartoon bites the dust well i still got my epic micky just to keep on seeing him R.I.P Oswald
Oswald is the best!!
I LOVE early animation! The way Oswald escorts his passengers onto the trolley, at 1:26, is very economical.
they need to make these cartoons now... only add couler and improve the graphics a little teeny bit and thats it!
God this is when my grandpa was around
He told me all about these cartoons =)
1:33 wow they had 3D animation back in 1927.
I just found out when this cartoon was released! July 4th, 1927! So Oswald has the same birthday as America does! :D
OMG! I remember watching this when someone showed it to me a few years ago! Shows even people in the 20's knew what they were doing. ^^
The cartoon you're referring to is called Christmas Comes But Once A Year - 1934, starring Grampy from Betty Boop. I'm certain it's on youtube somewhere.
better then all mickey clubhouse
"I was here FIRST! The fame was meant to be mine! Father loved me, I KNOW he did..."
"Oswald...father's dead. He's been dead for years."

I've seen this this episode. I love Oswald! He's the coolest!
Great to see pre-Mickey Mouse Disney cartoons!
Disney and Disney Channel are two differents things. :)
i cant believe no one remembers oswald the lucky rabbit. i learned about the rabbit when i when to walt disney world in florida for the first time
Many were horribly injured that day, the trolley was closed down, and the city sued. Soon after Oswald started looking for a new job.
Epic Mickey status!!! One of the greatest Disney games since the Kingdom Hearts series!!!
It's here and the cartoons on it are magnificent! "Ozzie of the Mounted" may be the best of the bunch.
I started seeing Oswald shirts in Disneyland a few days back and learned about him from various folks.
They should really bring him back "Mouse Works" style...
Walt has always been quoted as saying, "remember all of this started with a mouse." The truth is it all started with a rabbit!
a lost oswald cartoon was found hungry hobos will it be on youtube ?
I was really excited to hear that. I'm really looking forward to how this will all play out.
R.I.P Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks the creaters of Oswald and Mickey.
@MegGriffin45 I think the case was more that Walt was working for Charles Mintz, so his boss owned the rights to any ideas Walt came up with under his employment. But yeah, Walt was crushed that his creation was taken from him.
so very old.... Thanks for posting!
lol these old cartoon were so violent you would never see something on t.v like this now and days
I love how the streetcar has both an overhead electric pickup (and therefore electric motors) as well as a manual ignition crank, suggesting a gasoline engine.
This "trolley troubles" part on Epic Mickey was so crazy fun :3
I love the game so far, and Oswald is so cute when he likes you and is smiling. :D
Oswald merchandise is available at the Disney Store...I hope that he becomes popular, he's so charming.
Oswald is the best disney character ever!
This was great!
Like if you discovered Oswald via Epic Mickey.
How cute. I love his "speech" - reminds me of Woodstock. Real rabbits do make some pretty interesting noises though...
Imangin if Charles Mintz hadn't stolen Oswald, and Walt Disney's employers, a character like Mickey Mouse would never have been created.
I'd love to see Disney release a collection of hand-drawn shorts to reintroduce Oswald and promote Epic Mickey. :D
@Twilight14Vampire Steamboat Willie was not the first cartoon with sound. There were others released before that one that contained sound, but the audio and video did not play in sync. Steamboat Willie was the first cartoon where the audio played where it was supposed to in relation to what was being shown. Wow! Thanks for uploading this!! :D
this is so funny ! ive benn watching it for hours and still laughing
That was awesome!
Man, I find these old classic cartoons better than the new ones on right now.
the little cow don't want to move on... =D

One of my favorites...wonder where you got it (snicker)
He's confirmed for Epic Mickey as the main antagonist.
Ahh, I love these old cartoons! They should make cartoons like this now, for the classic feel
I just noticed at the start, Oswald has a single overall, but when the scene changes at 0:58, it's not there anymore. :D
I LOVE RABBIT OSWALD SO MUCH !
♡ I miss old cartoons like this.
Walt was pretty awesome back in his day. The black and white Mickey Mouse cartoons are the best!
omg! XD I've always wannted to see oswald animated, very cute!
*giggles* That's gold, right there!
@tacosizgood Makes sense given his background, he was seperated from his father (Walt Disney), who went on to 'replace' him with Mickey, who became far more famous than Oswald ever was. That'd piss me off, having a 'brother' who replaced me in every way and was more successful than I could ever hope to be.
oswald is awesome! i wish he wasn't forgotten.
@GoldLiahona Where is in In KHs? please tell cause I didn't see him and I'm going to play it again soon.
oswald it´s to funny. I love this cartoon
I can't wait to see Oswald kick ass in Epic Mickey
@TiCar85
That's probably because Ubbe Iwerks, who did most of Disney's animation (and this one), moved to Warner Bros.
Imagine if instead of Mickey today, we had Oswald. Hmm......
"Oswald Rabbit's Playhouse"?
I'm kind of glad Oswald didn't make it to the present, now that I think of it.
This was the second cartoon in the "Oswald" series, released in July 1927...
