That was an excellent review! One of the biggest misconceptions about mixing especially for those starting out is that you need some expensive monitors to get the most out of it. Your comments on the bass is absolutely correct and like anything else, once you get used to its true nature, you can made those adjustments to balance things out. I have done almost all of the mixing and mastering using these headphones for my ambient electronic music and I can say the results are rather good. You made me laugh about the blowing up speakers in car comment because that is exactly what it sounded like for a couple of my tracks as the car is my second "studio" for audio listening tests. I know exactly how my car's stereo and its interior sound is like, so it was not hard to go back and make a few adjustments to get it right. Keep up the content and rock on!
Thanks for your comment. Yes, you gotta love the car stereo for all things bass. I've never hit the off button so fast as I did on my first few mixes. 💣
That is an honest and spot on review. I bought k701 last week and I totally love 'em. These really are an acoustic magnifying glass. The bass is present enough but it's not overtaking all over like people are used to, I love that, it's like low end is kindly giving some of his presence to mids and highs. 20 years ago I would consider k701 trash, but now I really appreciate the balanced and detailed sound they produce since I often find myself in a situation when I need to do some headphones mixing. I'm sure no edm/electronic music producer will go for these but I'm not giving mine away, never 😎🎧. I think it's love 'em or hate 'em situation going on with k701.
I think you have steered me towards these instead of the Mackie CR3 monitors I was thinking of buying. Love the recordings you've done too. Amazing guitar work.
Good to know - and thanks for the input. Mackie used to do some good stuff way back when but those monitors in particular are pretty awful by most accounts. Enjoy the headphones...
you have to spend a lot more on speakers to get the same audio quality comparing to a decent headphone amp and headphones. 100% go for the headphones in my opinion. The 701 (and 702 as well as 612pro) are very very good headphones. In my opinion the 612pro has a bit more low bass and slightly flatter high mids and highs.
Good choice. The 712 pros are the only headphones I'd upgrade to - but I'd still keep the 701s as I'm totally used to them by now. Let me know how you get on with them. Cheers....
The biggest problem with the 701 and 702 is their fragility. if they fall to the ground it is very likely that one of the drivers will break. It happened to me twice, falling from the table (70 cm) onto the parquet, and in both cases one of the drivers was gone. And it's not a soldering problem, I opened the headphones and the connections up to the driver were perfect.
I must agree. They're not the sort of thing you'd take on the road. It's the reason they are NOT my daily-use headphones as much as I love the sound. I use the DT 770s for every-day stuff. I've sat on those and they didn't flinch :)
Haha, you could be Neil Finn's younger brother...yes,you're absolutely right with these great headphones. I love their airy feel ("stage" and comfort)...I have the "made in Austria" model and i wonder how the successor, the K702, compares to it...
Ha. I'm sure Neil Finn would have sleepless nights over that.... I've got the Austrian-made model and I have compared them to the 702s. Very VERY similar but I preferred mine. Just a fraction smoother across the whole range. Cheers. 👍
Mixing with this cans for more than 15 years now: still brilliant ! Your remarks are spot on 👌👍👍 Can you please tell me what cans you use to check the bottom end? I'm relying on my Dynaudio monitors but it would be easy to be able to check this spectrum on cans .
Sorry for the late reply. TH-cam has stopped notifying me about comments. Anyway... I've been using the Beyer DT770s 80 ohm for the low end. However, I changed the earpads recently and the bass seems to have suffered a little so I'm getting used to that again. I also have a pair of AKG K712 Pro which I will do a video for. The bass is way stronger than the 701s but the rest of the can is weird. Should be a good video though. But I still love the 701s. I'm used to the bass and the rest of the spectrum is superb. Mine are Austrian-made. Probably makes a difference. Cheers...
Best mix phones and have been for years, you want the ones made in Austria, even better with sonarworx that will give you more bottom end on them .I disagree about small monitors .Some small monitors are still fantastic quality and far better in small bedrooms than big monitors. Room treatment is more important that the speakers you use .
I agree some small monitors are actually pretty good as nearfields. The iLoud Micro Monitors are a case in point. So too the small Genelecs. However, most small monitors the same price as the 701s just don't compete at all. That's what I was hinting at. Thanks for your comment. PS. Mine are Austrian. £60 secund hand. Gotta love a bargain...
@@Frazer777 I done an experiment and got some creative t10 £ 30 speakers and run sonarworxs with them. Some of the best translating mixes i ever done .Its a mad world lol
I'll look out for those. As a 'check' speaker I've been using this God-awful Bluetooth box I found walking the dog. It's terrible but the bass is so boomy you can really zoom in on low end problems. Car stereo in a box, so to speak...
try the bass mod on these :> you'll find a how-to here on youtube and it is fully reversible, if you don't like it. I did it to my K712's and it just sets the low end to my liking. give it a try ;)
Yeah, I've heard good things about this mod but didn't fancy taking the cans apart. I didn't know the 712 Pro needed any modifications. They're a wonderful product. Might have to splash out on a pair of those at some point. Thanks for the comment 💪
@@Frazer777 they are quite a bit too sterile for my personal taste. the soundstage, high end resolution, non-annoyingness is all great but that mod makes the low end much more exciting, just right for modern music styles. i can highly recommend to try it out :) and looking at the k812 graph...well I see some similaritys in the low end between my modded headphones and these.
For the low end I use a pair of DT 770 Pro 80 ohm. They have a solid, reliable bass and it helps to readjust the ears when mixing entirely on headphones. I might do a review of them soon. Thanks for your input. Always good to get other opinions.
Thank you! An Excellent and Beautiful verbal description of these headphones. I am Zero Point Giant (Check my music out anywhere). I have been on my hunt for the perfect studio monitoring headphones,. Im also creating video feedback of each. And after many, I am STILL searching. (And you have perfectly described the many issues with sound from studio to speakers. I, like yourself have found I need up to 3 pairs of headphones to get all frequencies precise without the multiple sources and monitors ive needed for previous albums Ive put out.). Picking a pair up of these tomorrow thanks to your video! Thanks again! Cheers from South Florida!
Thanks for the comment. You won't be disappointed with these headphones - only your mixes :) They are so revealing. Let me know how it goes with them. Cheers...
You’re intro was awesome lol right to the point but I’m going to watch the whole video

You're full of life dude, keep doing what you do! Also, I'm gonna get these as my Samson SR850s broke! Thanks for the detailed explanation.
Thank you for this accurate, and professional review, helped me pick this baby up!
How are you finding them? Mine are old and Austrian and still the best headphones I own. Interested to know how the new ones are sounding.

If you want cheap little monitors you wont get better than the 104 jbl .Incredible for the money

hey, just wanna say this is the kinda headphone i like to see! Keep it up man!
Thanks for that, Gabe. I use these headphones for all critical work so I thought a vid might be useful. Cheers...
Headphone review* is what I meant to say before. Great job man, loved your information.

Its always worth getting a crosstalk plugin like can opener by Goodhurtz for headphone mixing .The image is more dependable for mixing
Thanks for been sincere … I need an headphones for good mix and mastering which I can here the eqs very well & bass
I'd go for the AKG K712 Pro. They seem to cover all bases pretty well. And they're excellent for everyday listening too. Thanks for the comment.
