It's probably because the ancient Rocky Linux kernel does not support your graphics card chipset. With more recent hardware that could be a problem. In such cases it is advisable to either use a more recent backported kernel, or to use a slightly more bleeding edge distro like Fedora, depending on what you need. In that case your NVidia card's basic features will work with the nouveau drivers. The advanced features (DRM, Cuda, etc) will always depend on the proprietary drivers.

That is some good advice thanks so much, I think it is more of me doing a lot more work with Linux to work through a lot of the issues!

The AMD gpu works, because the drivers it uses were made open source by AMD on linux, and are included with the linux kernel. Same with intel. You install mesa and you're ready to go. With Nvidia, that has historically not been the case, though last year they did release some code I think, and there is a new driver called Nvk that is being worked on and will be complete in a year or so. They've made a lot of progress with it already

Not sure what the hell you're talking. I run an nvidia card and I have no issues, very good fps in games, can work with triple monitor etc.
I'm using the latest proprietary driver (can't tell exact version without checking)
It lacks settings like in windows but that's the same for any hardware under Linux, sadly

@@GalaxyTracker I play games mainly on steam. But I run Linux mint and stay away from specific set ups or distros.
If I run into issues it's Linux and the installer of games or the games themselves having issues with Linux. Not my graphics card (like Diablo 4 and their stupid launcher that gave everyone a headache)

I'm beginning to get mix msges on that even now. First it was AMD is great for graphics. sure NVIDIA had issues, I think some distros don't work well with it either, have had issues and not the only one. But found xubuntu 22.04 to work well with the Ubuntu Pro. See my issue I'm still using an older GeForce but good CUDA capability.

Hello, I am finding that Nvidia GPU support is much better than it used to be as well, I have tried probably 4 different Distros here lately and have had no video issues on my RTX 4070

@@sherrilltechnology Yeah I know that is true kind of, GeForce Older ones, I tend to call RTX one just RTX even they do have "geforce" beforehand. Just specific things needing to stick to the 470 driver version, some linux distros like to install the 515 one, I can't use that. And Just specific issues to specific distros really. I'm not gonna bash em tho lmao BASH lol That what Linux is all about though. Finding the right distro and stability. And of course uninstall some of the bloat or things I don't need that it default installs.

You are exactly right finding the distro that works best for you is a journey and sometimes takes a really long time, but it is very cool to see people using Linux and learning with it. Thanks so much for watching!

My boys both have a RTX 3060 and those things are bulletproof the 4070 seems to be a bit more picky but still a good card. What games are you playing on your rig

@@sherrilltechnology cities skylines 1 and 2, kerbal space program 1, star citizen, armed assault 3, ready or not, uboat, factorio, gta v, red dead redemption 2, Diablo 4 and some others that I can't recall without checking my library.
Im not playing all of them but have tested a lot of them. I play just 3 or 4 games in total.
I have more issues trying to run games like war thunder or world of tanks and setting up trackir 4. But that's not because of the card but me not being a Linux power user and those games being problematic to run on Linux in general.
But on protondb you see a lot of users with 4xxx cards running games properly. And a lot of people having issues with amd cards.
I'm still convinced it's more of a general Linux and/or distro specific issue.
I run Linux mint for this reason - good stability and support. If I have 1.3% less fps because I am not running a "gamer" Distro, so may be it. Some games actually run better than on windows 11, performance wise.
Linux needs more users - and gladly it's happening already thanks to the SteamDeck. With enough users the support for Linux and the development will increase.
One more reason to not discourage the majority of gamers (who use nvidia cards) of trying to run it.
      Thats at least my opinion.

Yep the 7600XT is a little worse in terms of performance but in Linux I agree it is better. I had no trouble though with my 4070 in PopOS but they do have a proprietary driver I think when there is a proprietary driver it works fine but I was trying to use it with Rocky Linux which is an Enterprise version. How is it better? What can you do with an amd card that you can't with nvidia?
I have an 3060ti and absolutely 0 issues. I work on it (triple monitor) and game on it.
Linux mint here. If you chose a broken and badly serviced Distro it's your fault not nvidia or amd or anyone else's
