Canon 50mm 1.8 ii vs Canon 50mm 1.8 STM | Worth the Upgrade?

  • We’ve had and used the Canon 50mm 1.8 ii lens for many years, but recently I picked up the new Canon 50mm 1.8 STM lens. This lens came in a bundle that included the Canon 10-18mm. I really wanted to see if there was much of a difference between the old 50mm and the new one. Take a watch and see for yourself. Most of this video is based around video needs. Hope this helps you make a decision as to whether you would keep you current 50mm or move up to the new STM version!

    I got myself the STM version for a great price $90. I never had the original nifty fifty as I started taking photography seriously relatively late in 2017, but I have huge respect for it because it's the predecessor to the STM and should I say the OG of the portrait lenses for a lot of beginner, novice and high level amateur photographers.

    Just bought Canon A2 and the stm 50mm. Looking to get back into analogue photography. I switched to Sony last year and sold my old cannon dslr and lenses one of them was the 40mm stm pancake lens and it was fantastic and quite silent so hoping the 50mm is similar. I can use it on my Sony mirrorless camera too. Nice review btw

  • @ItsaCampingThing
    @ItsaCampingThing 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    After watching the comparisons a few times I thought the STM version locked in focus just a fraction quicker. Also it looked a tiny bit sharper too. Especially in the B-roll. I have the none STM version and I am considering buying the newer STM model for video.
    As you say if your primarily going the use the lens for B-roll then maybe the audio isn’t such a problem. As you rightly say you’d probably cut the audio out anyway in that scenario.
    I would assume you could always use a lav mic with the older version for the times you do a piece to camera . It’s a tricky choice if you already have the older version already.

    • @gregtoope
      @gregtoope  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Paul Blackwell thanks for the comment. It really is a difficult decision if you already have the non STM version. I don’t think I would buy it again. Just not enough gain. But since I have it it is the one that I use. Plus having 2 isn’t horrible for those Multicam shots.

      Cruisn Canada I’ve just trying 50mm mk2 with a lav mic and recorder ( Sony ICD-UX560 ) and only then could you not hear the clicking of the old lens. So that’s probably the way to go for me. Thanks for the video. It was very helpful

    • @gregtoope
      @gregtoope  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@XtianApi so why is the 18-55 STM, 10-18 STM, 15-45 STM and many other STM lenses incredibly silent? For the most part those STM lenses are quieter than most of my USM lenses. But not the 50mm 1.8

      @@gregtoope I have noticed that the smaller cheaper stm lenses are not nearly as quiet. My pancake 40mm stm is far louder than my basically silent 10-18mm. I would think that is the size not allowing for sound dispersal. But just a guess.
