Kibum knew we needed that bit of silence at the end just to absorb the PHENOMENAL fabulousness we just experienced. As an 80s kid (‘81), this slays every bit of nostalgia heaven for me. I haven’t found ANYONE that slays this genre like Kibum/Key. Sure, there are those who do a good job, but Kibum OWNS this concept. He doesn’t just emulate the era-he drags it into the present and makes it HIS.
Btw, this is the third installment of his trilogy… “Bad Love”, “Gasoline”, and “Killer”. You think the MV is cool?! You should see the FIVE versions of this album…and the multiple versions of the other albums. Space Ray Guns, VHS Tape packaging, Floppy Disk packaging, Cassette Tape for the QR code album, Video Game Case packaging, and one that looks like an OG TV Screen with interchangeable images to place in the front. He’s been planning and dreaming of this concept for over fifteen years and he fought tooth and nail to see it brought to life the way he wanted. The other MVs are just as freaking EPIC. Like I said, NO ONE does this concept like him.
Kibum (stage name Key) debuted in 2008 with the legendary Princes of KPOP, SHINee (consisting of Jinki (stage name Onew), Jonghyun, Kibum (Key), Minho, and Taemin). Key is a force to be reckoned with…an immense talent who was the only person selected out of 8000 when he auditioned. He’s a true all-rounder and I’m thrilled you’re enjoying his music!
Some more info on Key (Kim Kibum - 23 Sep 1991): he wears many hats (both literally and figuratively) - he’s a Vocalist, Dancer, Rapper, and Official Fashion Director for SM Entertainment. Shawol Fandom Name-Lockets (he’s our Key). Kibum also calls us Lil Freaks (inspired by Lady Gaga’s lil monsters…he’s our Captain Freak). Kibum is also an actor, former fashion editor for ELLE Korea, MC, and has a skincare line with Youlief entitled “Face” and a collaboration with the cosmetics line Espoir. He’s a longtime cast member of the weekly show, “Amazing Saturday”, is currently a member of the “I Live Alone” television series, and is an accomplished stage actor. Furthermore, he is known as one of the best-dressed men in Korea and began designing SHINee‘s concert attire in 2015 besides also working on his solo work designs for himself and his backup dancers. Kibum is constantly going viral for something, randomly appears on the news, and has been memed multiple times. In fact, one of his viral memes from years ago recently turned into a real-life endorsement with McDonald’s! Shawol was blessed with the release of this highly-anticipated repackage: “KILLER”, which (unsurprisingly) slayed the industry! What else should we expect from our all-rounder KEY-LLER, though?!

Everything you see and hear with "Killer" has Key's signature stamp on it. It's his title track from his repackaged album, which is a follow up to his previous "Gasoline" MV and album. if you like "Killer", you will love all of his other solo songs as well. So far, he has 5 solo albums that all have a retro vibe, but because he is a member of SHINee, none of his songs are anything alike.
There's a lot more to the story. To understand more of the story, you have to connect things from his other MVs, such as "Gasoline", "Bad Love" and "Hate That ...", etc. And,
From his outfits to the backup dancers looks, to the set design and story concept, as well as the song lyrics, and the whole album -- including the album packaging -- was designed or chosen by him. Key is involved in the entire creative process when it comes to his solo work and everything you see and hear is what he envisioned for this entire album/repackage concept. Every aspect is all part of his design.
Key said his style is more like retro '80s/'90s MTV, so that's the treatment they used to come up with his solo concepts and styles. So far, the retro aesthetic is the look and feel he has had for all of his solo MVs and albums. And he has only dove in deeper with the retro concept after he came back from the military.
Even all the merchandise and album packaging that was designed to look like vintage toys and games, etc. were all conceptualized by him. I mean Key lives in the world of vintage-cool. He knows how to take a style and concept and own it.
Since gaining artistic control of his solo releases with his "Bad Love" album, he has been building a whole world based on retro sci-fi TV shows/movies and comics, etc. Therefore, at least his solo storyline could very well be connected between his MVs.
When it comes to Key's solo stuff, you never have to question who was the stylist because I guarantee that it will always be him. Key is our fashionista of the group, who is SHINee's designer for a lot of their MVs and stage outfits. He has even been given the official title as SM's Director of Fashion, and he is often consulted on fashion trends when it comes to SM projects. He has gained a reputation for his fashion, so he is involved in all aspects of the styling for everything he does these days. And because Key was involved in creating the storyline for his MV, he was also involved in the whole look and feel, including clothing choices and costume design.
I interpret the song to be about how he is telling his former lover to "remember that I am the Killer," and I warned you that I was no good. Their relationship was like a action thriller, it starts out fun and full of excitement, but along the way things go wrong. Key was the one who ended the relationship and he is saying that he is the cause of all the toxicity. In other words, he is the bad guy and he wants the girl to remember that he is no good for her. They had their fun, but now he is done and he doesn't want to go back. He is also saying that in order to preserve all that is good about the girl they need to end their relationship because all he will do is cause her pain and ruin her life, etc. "Stop looking at me with those innocent eyes," you are making it hard for me to leave and I warned you before we even got started that I was no good. He can't help being bad because he is like a killer who is incapable of reciprocating her love, etc., so before things really go bad, they have to end their relationship. And in order to get over him, she needs to remember that "I'm the Killer." In other words, you might think you love me, but if you keep trying to hold on to what we had, you will only get "killed." He is saying he is incapable of giving her the love and affection that she deserves, so it's better for her to think of him as the bad guy and to end things before they get worse.
As you are starting to discover, SHINee are known for having some of the best singers in all of Kpop. If you were to listen to Key singing a cappella while performing this intense choreograph for "Killer", he would sound just as flawless as in the MV. That is why, even as rookies, senior artists would stop what they were doing to watch SHINee's rehearsals on music programs because SHINee's vocal talent is that impressive.
When SHINee debuted in 2008, all the members were teenagers -- Key was only 16 -- and they were one of the youngest groups at the time. However, even then, they were shocking everyone with their talent. SHINee was the first group to demonstrate how it was possible to sing live while performing intense choreography and still maintain stable vocals. And as you are discovering, they have only become even more impressive over the years. Key's solo work is the perfect example of what make him the complete package and demonstrates what it means to be a true artist.
And although, as a member of SHINee, Key is considered one of the top vocalists in the industry, he is also a lead rapper. So he can literally do it all.
As you have seen, Key is an unbelievably skilled dancer, who can take any dance and make it his own. Now you have to check out Key's dance practices for "Killer." As the title of the song indicates, this choreography is killer and when you see it without any cuts or edits you will die. LOL
SHINee are always on another level and they are constantly outdoing themselves with every new project. It amazes me after more than 15 years that SHINee can still continue to reinvent the Kpop industry with every new release, whether it's as a group project or one of the member's solos, and yet they do it every time without fail.
SHINee are the originators and trendsetters of everything you see Kpop groups doing today.
As you are starting to realize, with every new song and dance SHINee comes out with, it's expected to be different than the last. Therefore, you will never see the exact same style or sound from them in any of their songs or dances. Nothing you hear from them as a group, or the members' solos, will ever be exactly like anything you have ever seen or heard before and, yet, it will be very much "their style." They raise the bar even higher with every performance. And that's what makes them SHINee. :D

Key is that boss b!tch. Totally my Shinee bias. We stan talented kings. He's one of my fave soloists too, right up there with Bibi and Taemin. And he's so sassy irl. He gives princess energy. 🤣 I just really love Key a lot.🫰Happy you got rec'd him.
Oh, also, Gasoline. She serves so hard for no reason. The looks. The make-up. The fashion. The skirt and knee-high boots. Key slays it. Very androgynous. And it's totally in your lane. Not as much synth but big BIG cinematic marching band vibes. Feels like a victory song. Legendary. Iconic. Bad Love is more like Killer, but honestly check out Gasoline first just to switch up the vibes.

You're going to absolutely adore 'Bad Love'(Key) and "1of1'(SHINee). Killer is amazing but Bad Love is at the PEAK of the million tries kpop had at synthpop/synthwave - along many other great songs. And 1of1 is just pure gold. SHINee has tried many different styles and is never the same and let me tell you, between all of those songs(korean title tracks), 1of1 is my favourite, and the competition is ridiculously high. It's a must listen. It has that 80's 90's boygroup vibe, very colourful and playfull, it just makes me happy whenever I listen to it. It's also a great intro to previous SHINee stuff. Oh I just now you're gonna dig it.

The first time I saw Key was about 15 years ago. He became my first ever kpop bias and still is my favorite guy in the industry. Taeyeon is my female bias and overall ult and you don’t understand how lucky I feel that these 2 are besties with a perfect chemistry and a single shared brain cell. People just aren’t supposed to be as lucky as I consider myself with these two.

As soon as I saw the thumbnail of your video on my page I was like oh boy you're going to love this because of the 80's synth. This song gives very The Weeknd and MJ inspiration. Great reaction. Another one you might love from Key is Bad Love.

  • @MrEmemo
    @MrEmemo ปีที่แล้ว +4

OOhh I've been waiting for this!! Key doesn't have a signature sound but he fits this retro concept so well!!
He had a "retro trilogy": three different realises inspired by the sounds and aesthetics of the 80's - and in Killer and Bad Love, those influences bleed into the title tracks. You are going to ADORE Bad Love, it's THE BEST.
For this era of his solo career, he was also heavily involved in the creative process - from chosing the demos, requesting songs from producers, writting lyrics and even album packaging. He worked really hard and even mentioned having to "fight with the company" for things to come out his way.
I think that between the SHINee members, Key may have the easiest voice to recognize for new fans - it's very nasal and metallic, sharp and LOUD. He does both the rap and vocals in SHINee songs, he can go both low and high, has a crisp belt and is also the member who learns the coreography the fastest! There is nothing he can't do, so the company gave him the nickname 'Almighty Key' and debuted him as the lead-vocalist, lead-rapper and lead dancer of the group(and I personally think he is the funniest and most down to earth member too).
Once you had a bit of his solo work you are going to be able to recognize him in group MVs - and if you are having trouble just check for a small scar in the left eyebrow.

Indeed, each member of SHINee is unique and incredible, and together they make magic! Key is the savior of 80-90 retro sync, and pulls it of like no other. It is perfect to his strong vocals, and he knows how to use it, and yet his ballads are so soft and stunning on its own. Next of Key I would suggest MV of BAD LOVE and ANOTHER LIFE, and also his spectacular GAZOLINE. If you look for something slow, I would suggest HATE THAT (feat. Taeyoung), or "My 18". Good old Hip-Hop you will find in VILLAIN, and something sassy in BOUND! Hope to see your reactions soon!!

Next up please react to Key's
    - Bad Love MV (I can guarantee that it will be your next instant playlist 😅)
    - Gasoline MV (My favorite dance Anthem!)
    - "Easy" special MV (My favorite b-side from Key. He made special video for his fans and it's a pure ART!!!)
    - "Another life" special MV (His English song, another MV he made for his fans)
    - "I wanna be" MV (from his 2018 album)
    - "Forever yours" MV (My favorite positive vibe song 😅)
You'll be more shocked when you react to Minho, Jonghyun and Onew 😂😂😂 Trust me, Shinee has 5 top tier soloists! When they're together it's overwhelming ❤

So glad you reacted to Keys Killer first. Like Taemin, Key is an amazing performer with loads of charisma, style and unique visions. He nails the retro concepts. I love him very much for that, his captivating voice and dancing and his sass.😊❤ You should also react to Bad Love, Hate that (a duet with Taeyeon), Gasoline and the performance of Bound. His music is absolutely great. Loved your reaction, you will love his whole discography, I am sure.

Everyone is recommending Gasoline album. Of course. It's brilliant. Make sure to check out Bad Love too. Really Key has no bad songs. Shinee are legends. Jonghyun was a genius and superstar, Key is a born performer and director, he gets every detail exactly right. Taemin will be an artist that future generations of artists will be trying to emulate for decades. Minho is the glue and a hella sexy and classy soloist is his own right. And Onew is THE voice and has his own wonderful, magical vibe.
EXO is technically my ult group but Shinee is like 1.5. I always say that my favorite between them is whichever group I'm listening to at that moment. It's so hard to say one is better than the other because they really aren't. They are different but equally amazing. I wouldn't give one up for the other.

I love all the SHINee guys so much, even their solo work, so I always purchase their music. However, Taemin and Key have more the type of music I'm into. They are very similar in their choices, and I obsessively listen to Taemin's and Key's albums along with SHINee. With them you get a full group, five excellent soloists and the best live performers you'll ever encounter.

SHINee was the first group I fell hard for back them, until I met EXO and fell in love with them and took the spotlight, but still, SHINee is one of the most incredible and talented groups out there.
