I know I am late to this video; however, I have spent hours attempting to shade gemstones in vain. I understand highlights and shadows and a three color palette--plus blending other colors. You made it so easy! You spoke in the language I understand! Thak you again!. Mine doesn't pop as much as yours--but it's passable! Blessings! I also subscribed!
I'm late to the party but just watched this and really look forward to trying this, thank you. Was so easy to understand, captions are brilliant ( need captions as hearing impaired). Thank you
Very helpful. Thank you so much for this. I followed the tutorial and just doing the rough sketch showed me how beautiful they would be with a good hour spent on them. 💜💜
This was very helpful! The only suggestion I would make is perhaps put little swatches of each color along the bottom or side of your page to help someone who is trying to pick out a good set of colors. This would help no matter what brand people have 🙃
I love your tutorials! Please do quartz! Something a little fractured not seethrough all the way through but with parts that have light coming through, like holding a unpolished rose quartz in direct sunlight
OK, this is the first time I am viewing your vids and I am looking to expand my sketching. If you could PLEASE talk about the blender pencil you are using - I have never heard of any such thing - I would be most grateful . =)
@@danishlee9162 Oh- i forgot i made this comment haha. I made this novel for fun only. I putted it in my drafts. The novel was about this planet that had 5 lands on them. each and everyone one of them had a queen and king. This planet was strange by the way. They were like aliens, but with powers. The queens were the ones with most power. Sometimes they can turn into great big monsters but they don't do that or they will scare the little ones, plus it's for battles only. This one queen had an abusive husband and was forced to have a baby with him since of there parents. So basically they did. When she was pregnant, she killed the husband. She cried and cried but she knew it was worth it. She hid the body under the ground, 6 feet, burned everything that had in touch with the gun or his blood and boom. It was done. She went to sleep in fear. One day, she went to the hospital by herself since she started feeling a little pain on the bottom of her back. BOOM There was a explosion on the other land. It was so big, all of the other lands saw it. Millions were killed. the novel was interesting tbh, i loved it. Wanna hear more?
You are so welcome! And Pearly lookin ones are on my video To Do list!! I hope to be good enough at doing them to do a video by like next week!? fingers crossed!
A good clear video. Thanks! Could you show some designs for going around the gem?Comparing different pencils would be good too.I am new to this and am Loving it!! Good for learning coloured pencil blending.I will be looking at the faceted gems as I found some cabechons in my stash. Judy
very welcome, and thank you for the video suggestions, id like to do at least one of those. i only have 3 different brands of pencil, so it wouldnt be a great comparing video. hopefully i will be able to do that in the future tho.
Thank you, All I do is gems, I don't really do any other type tutorials I do have a tiger print gem though. Here is the link for that. th-cam.com/video/It5k6g_4tPs/w-d-xo.html
thank you! Yes you can grab a whole bag off of amazon or find them at your favorite hobby store, here is my affiliate link to them on amazon amzn.to/39IFLon
Nice video. I'd love to see different shapes, how the light/colors would look. Or even faceted gems. Not sure I like the looks of the gel pen highlight. How would I go about that highlight without using the pen? Would I simply "map out" the highlight while coloring the darker top?
Thank you so much. I have a written faceted Gem tutorial on my etsy if you would like. also to get the highlight without a gel pen you could use acrylic paint or map it out like I did in my first ever 'gem' video. here is the link for that th-cam.com/video/wnKiVER7Cpo/w-d-xo.html and here is the Faceted gem tutorial!! www.etsy.com/listing/453425220/pdf-faceted-gem-tutorial?ref=shop_home_feat_4 I hope you enjoy!!
VERY nice video! thank you so much for sharing. I look forward to more! If you get the chance, would love to see some turquoise with some cracks. Thanks again!
Love this tutorial, helps me practice my shading a lot (which is quite terrible), but how would one go about incorporating watercolors into Gemstone sketching? I've tried to use it with varying success. Any tips?
Thank you so much may god bless you and everyone with all the happiness and success in the world Amen can you please teach technical drawing of gemstone or jewellery basic
I scratch it back and forth on a scrap piece of paper to get if flowing first, then I use it lightly and barely touch the paper, Its more like touching the gel itself to the paper and letting it flow out :)
Fantastic! I am absolutely a newbie when it comes to gemstones. As a matter of fact, this is my first tutorial video on the subject, but I'd really like to learn. I have a few coloring books that have pages that include gemstones, which is one of the reasons why I'd like to learn, but now that I've watched your video, I think I have fallen in love with the idea of them even more, which is why I have asked to join your facebook group! I do have a question about the Sakura white gelly roll pen. I was wondering if you could substitute a white colored pencil for it. Would that work, or would the results not be as good? I ask because I know that many times gel pens and colored pencils do not mix. Thanks again for a great video. I've subscribed to channel and plan to keep up with you!
Hi Cindy! Gems are so addictive and thank you! To make the highlights and have them be very white in order to stand out no, you can't substitute a white pencil. however if you draw in the hightlights first and them color around them using the paper for the white, that can work. :)
No there isn't , these are just a student grade pencil so the name are like yellow green, light green, dark green and so on. I don't remember what all I used. But that is kind of the point, if you don't know then you can use whatever you would like ^.^
mzcroppycat i have some online classes on etsy for gems. But if you mean in front of people like a classroom no. There is not enough local interest for something like that
Nowadays that is almost all I do is faceted gems, they are my favorite!! I have both written and video tutorials on how to do them on my etsy site. etsy.com/shop/vitruvianart and you can see mine and lots of others on facebook either on my art page or in my gem group
Thank you for sharing your experience with this technique. Colouring gemstones looks so intimidating, but after watching your video, I thought, "Hey, I could totally do that." I've watched a couple of other videos, but they just left me mystified. Thanks for making the process so plain.
Only correction....possibly put indirect v direct light sources on separate bits of card but next to each other.....make it clearer for absolute beginners. Do one first THEN the other, because the two couldn’t be next to each other in “real life”.
Thank you! You make coloring gemstones easy and they look real. And you don’t use a confusion of 15-20 colors to get to the finished result.
Thanks for easy demonstration!
I know I am late to this video; however, I have spent hours attempting to shade gemstones in vain. I understand highlights and shadows and a three color palette--plus blending other colors. YAY! I am so glad that I could help!
I would love to find out how to do a faceted cube or emerald cut gemstone to please!
Thx for keeping these recording up I refer to your recordings often.

Excellent! !♥♥
What do u colour the outer rings on both of these, pls?
im not sure what you are asking Cleo, I didn't color the setting on either of these.
So it's wax colored pencils and what about the paper,,,? Can you use any type of paper or is there an specific type of paper
you can use any pencils and any paper.
Can u do it with watercolors?
Yes you can
Also my gel pens don't write that well over Prisma coloured pencils. Too waxy?
it could be? it could be that you need a different gel pen.
What brand are the pencils? They color nice?
I don't remember, maybe Prangs?? I made this quite a while ago
Vitruvian Art wow I'm surprised, they have that brand here at Staples and they don't cost much at all. :-)
