  • Dr. Theresa Larson (movement health & inclusive wellness expert, Movement Rx founder) joins us to discuss her work with adaptive athletes, what it was like to join the U.S. military after 9/11 and as a woman, and what you need to take full ownership over your pain. Mayim discusses first learning breathwork through Dr. T and they break down movement healing, downregulating the nervous system to improve mental wellness, why social support is so crucial to recovering from physical and emotional wounds, and practical ways to improve your daily ergonomics. Dr. T recalls growing up in a physically competitive household, her shift in self-esteem after her mom passed at an early age, and her job searching for land mines in Iraq. She explains her struggle to advocate for herself when her disordered eating impacted her military service, why disordered eating can feel extremely lonely, its prevalence amongst military personnel, how she was finally able to ask for help, and how her recovery led her to living with more intention & becoming less of a people-pleaser.

The precious thing I’ve learnt in this fab episode: Allow yourself to feel sorry for the one who’ll accompany you all your life: yourself. Let ourselves to feel self-compassion don’t thinking of it as a weakness, specially to those seen by others as the strong ones, the caretakers/providers in the social group.
And then, with that, exceptional Dr. Maté’s episode rises up and resonates in me again and again.
    Homework checklist after this episode:
    1. Look at previous injuries
    2. Look at and prevent body’s asymetries. Align ergonomically your body.
    3. Don’t try to progress too fast. Give yourself time to recovery
    4. Listen to your body
    5. Make intentional time to talk with loved ones and find social support.
    6. Sleep enough
    7. Eat well and enough during the day, limiting sugar not eating few hours before sleep time: let your gut rest, it’s your 2nd brain.
    8. Move often, even if you’re in pain and remember pain feeling is individual and relative.
    9. Learn to relax: mind is our sixth sense.
    10. Learn how to breath properly.
Bit too much? Work in process yet even not knowing that some things were already being done. This podcast gave me tools in past episodes! Forever grateful! 🫶🏽

Dr T's bulimia is one manifestation of the many that can be suffered by someone who is the caretaker of others, whether they are marines, patients/relatives with Alzheimer's or dementias, profoundly disabled quadriplegics..Something that society forgets, but that those of us who’re arround that caregiver also forget. How much I regret now not having been much more aware of my sister’s health/problems while she cared her quadriplegic hubby along with our old parents..My deepest regret in life.
On a funny side, how I love this sympathetic skeleton Dr. T has there! A sweet reminder to all of us & a lesson of humbliness: we all will end being only just that!

Differently abled is my preferred term. Disability implies you're missing something based on one idea of what a body or human should be. We're all just different. No ideal "perfect " human. And not all abilities are physical. Also people don't for the most part think of certain things as a different ability, wearing glasses,ADD etc, We're all just different not less than. Loved this conversation. ❤

All respect to your opinion, but both as a physically disabled person and someone who's been involved in disability justice, I absolutely preferdisabled and disability. I'm not differently abled. I have a disability. The world is designed for people who can walk on their own two feet, and I can't. It's that simple. So you'll absolutely get some pushback from a lot of disabled folks if you use that term. You might be disabled yourself, so if that's the terminology you're comfortable with, go for it. But I truly have never heard it from fellow disabled folks. Just my two cents.

@@charlotte7554 and @ Amore Thank you for this honest, insightful conversation - I teach inclusive pedagogy theory and methods in an attempt to help German educational stakeholders increasingly align with and implement the LernKompass Agenda 2030 SDG 4 across all 16 federal states and train personal and teaching assistants to better understand and serve the needs of their clients. In Germany, we are still learning how to think and talk about diverse needs and abilities in respectful, empowering ways as opposed to categorical and stigmatizing ways that also don't diminish or deny people's experiences and struggles.
When I asked ChatGPT what kind of nomenclature is appropriate, this is what I got:
Here are some expressions that meet the requirements of being respectful and inclusive when discussing special needs children and adults:
"Children/adults with special needs" instead of "disabled children/adults"
"Individuals with diverse abilities" instead of "people with disabilities"
"Unique learning styles" instead of "learning disabilities"
"Differently abled" instead of "handicapped" or "disabled"
"Neurodiverse" instead of "abnormal" or "mentally ill"
"Accessible environments" instead of "disabled-friendly spaces"
"Supportive services" instead of "special needs services"
"Inclusive education" instead of "segregated education"
"Adaptive technology" instead of "assistive devices"
"Person-centered planning" instead of "managing disabilities"

    • @charlotte7554
      @charlotte7554 ปีที่แล้ว +3

@Susan Byron That’s so interesting! I lived in northwest Germany for a short time. I'm in the US now, but I will say there's a big difference here between disability justice communities/language and best practices for inclusive pedagogy. Disability justice language tends towards disability first language "disabled person", while in education it tends towards person first language "person with disability". There are some exceptions though, especially in Deaf culture, at least here. The interesting thing is that the language is ever evolving, and I think the more words we have to describe disabled experience, the better!

I have a very rare autoimmune disease, partially blind, in chronic pain since age 6, so I have been in some respects at different times in my life been sick, very sick, in the Hospital, sick at home, very tired, handicapped, disabled, doesn't really matter to me, doesn't change what I deal with or how much I cant do or how much I cant work. Whatever the name its exhausting, painful and depressing. What matters to me is to try and keep going everyday! To keep striving, to not give up! To keep communication lines open with drs, family friends. to not get too discouraged or isolated. To be thankful, to keep praying.

I would love an episode delving into the effects of working in a direct care giving role. I have worked for several years teaching children with Autism. Work like this can be incredibly emotionally draining. You might be physically attacked several times a day, depending on the people you are working with. (Obviously this is not always the case and is in no way a description of everyone with Autism or a developmental disability). People with these types of disabilities primarily use aggression as a form of communication where no other form exists for them.
I wonder what kind of long-term health consequences people in this role will face, when constantly having the physiological response of essentially being attacked, and having to respond in a way that is both calm, and prioritizes the safety and well-being of the person trying to hurt you. Don't get me wrong, the work is beautiful and rewarding, but it also takes it's toll on what is often an underpaid and under appreciated group of workers.

For me, working with a skilled physical therapist was critical to learning to live alongside, and down regulate pain from numerous dislocations secondary to hyper mobility. I trust my PT to know when my pain indicates damage, and when it is just communication. Changing the way I think about my pain, and no longer fearing it, has allowed me to work through it and to recover more fully.

In the past couple years, I’ve broken some bones and cannot run or do the exercises that I used to first time in my life I am finding myself turning to bulimia.

I went to a rehab for a week just to shut TF DOWN. I’d been trying to shut down for weeks and couldn’t do it at home. I’d read and watched and listened to everything I could get my hands on! I’d known for weeks I wanted to get a copy of Your Body Keeps The Score. I’m a nurse for 30 yrs and want ALL THE WHYS… Long story short…in this inappropriate setting for my needs/rehab (lol), in this half ass little gift shop, on the shelf amongst the other books was a single copy of Your Body Keeps The Score. I decided then that my time/stay wasn’t so wasted. Why would I go to rehab instead of inpatient mental/emotional treatment? It’s what my insurance paid for. It’s what my life allowed. Single mom can’t be away for too long. I’m just surviving yo. Love you Mayim ❤❤❤ PS I have to say!…this chic is a tad female version of John Mulaney. She’s a beautiful Irish lass with brains n soul. I really liked this episode. As a wife of a Marine and a mother of a Marine it pains me how the support of our military people have not changed. Hubby joined the Marines 25 years ago and was in for 8 years, son joined 2 years ago and I’m sure Dr. T is in between both and the mental health support is still not there.
My dad passed away in December and I was able to have my son come home (he is overseas) and he told his friend (I was listening to the conversation) that there is no counselor for him to talk to, just a religious person (he is atheist) so there goes his support. My dad would call him every week (he mostly did not answer due to time difference) and was a very loving dad/grandpa. It was a huge loss and no support for him. With a hubby with complex PTSD that had to fight for his discharge psychiatric evaluation I worry constantly on our troops and specially I worry for my son.
Hubby has chronic pain and although he is in therapy mental and physical, that brain washing thing of “push it down” is still in him as he comes from a military household.
I will recommend this podcast as I do of so many you do, one of these days he will listen to me! 😅

I went through PT and learned about pain management, other than medicine. I have nerve and muscle issues still to this day. I can function, but I still have those bad days. I'm scheduled to see a doctor next month. I hope he might know something that can help. I don't want to take a pill if possible. I'm open to alternatives. I have an electro device that helps. I use essential oils like frankincense. Massage helps. Magnesium is wonderful.

I can relate well to her comments on the military structure, but not the eating disorder. The stresses women in the mid to late 80's were being in squadrons that were male dominated and you were 1of 2 women among hundreds of men. That made the overall environment one that was not accommodating if not outright hostile towards women. There were issues with women constantly being pursued by multiple men. Many of whom lacked self control or morals, and then there were those who would outright assaulted women. Often the mentality was one of, what do women expect is going to happen when they choose to serve in the military among allen?
In all the environment was be tough, man up, and if you had problems there was no place to get help. Or your help was a male officer with 30yrs in service who was bucking for General and still had the same attitudes of, mental health problems in the military are just a matter of you needing to accept you are in the military and you need to overcome your weaknesses.

I don’t like to listen when he’s on because he’s just beyond annoying, contributing zip. It’s not that you just plain don’t need him, he’s actually a detriment to your success.
