In the eighth century, Arabs conquered modern-day Tajikistan and brought with them Islam. Conversion to Islam occurred by means of incentives and gradual acceptance. Islam spread most rapidly in cities and along the main river valleys. By the ninth century, it was the prevalent religion in the entire region. While many cultures had settled the area throughout history the modern Tajik people trace their ancestry back to the Samanid Empire (875-999 AD), who ruled the area from nearby Samarkand and Bukhara.
