Kathleen, thank you so much for re introducing these videos for all of us who have no idea where to begin. You are so patient and clear in your instructions. It sure is helping me to set goals for myself and not feeling overwhelmed and thinking i have to do this all at once. I love your idea of "formulas". I dont have a printer and am saving for a sewing machine. I have less anxiety after watching and listening to you. Thank you. ❤!!!
I am so impressed that you have notebooks with "recipes" for your journals. That never occurred to me! But, I mostly fly by the seat of my pants. Ha! But, these folding patterns, and your formula, while I do them, having actual plans for them is brilliant. This was a really helpful video, even for seasoned journal makers. Thanks so much, Kathleen!
So many creative tips and tricks included in this video! It was really fun to watch you choose and then mix and match each piece. Your notebook filled with ideas and measurements was a huge treat! AND your penmanship is beautiful! Thank you so much for sharing!❤️🤗
Thanks Kathleen, that was really great! Following your formula should make putting a signature together much more easier. Thanks again for covering these essentials.😊
Kathleen: good tutorial. Since crafters are so creative having a plan is good, but wonderful surprises usually happen along the way. And that’s what it is all about. Fun watching you do your crafting. Thanks, Carol from California
This is just the video I needed today🌻 I don’t know why mixing in paper sizes is such a challenge for me. Everything is symmetrical, folded exactly in half, edges trimmed neatly. Your signatures are so much more dynamic ❤️
New subbie here. I’ve been making junk journals for years and I’m finding everything you do here (I’ve been binging all week) so inspiring and fresh. I love the way you break it down and make it all so clear. I took a break from making journals for a few months and I just assembled a new journal that I plan to decorate with all of your fun ideas. Thank you for your amazing inspiration.😍🌻👍
I love watching your assembly of signatures, Kathleen. Having a formula/system, even if it’s just a guide, makes my brain very happy! 😘 After watching you for a long time, I knew that you would have a process for doing this. Thank you for sharing it with us! 🥰 You have another awesome journal on the way! 😀💞
Kathleen, it was fascinating to watch you put the pages together for the signatures. I had to laugh when I saw your on-screen "...don't mind my muttering." I do that! Somehow it helps me get things clear in my mind. This journal is working out to be so pretty. I don't remember if you intended it to be a fall journal or not, but the soft blues and the oranges look very much like autumn to me. I'm loving it. Thanks for all the tips and tricks that you shared. I truly appreciate your teaching; it is very helpful. You probably notice I've picked up ideas that I learned from you, such as stenciling with a scroll stencil. It adds such a pretty accent. I'm looking forward to Monday to find out what the surprise is in the paper tied with string.
Thank you Linda! BTW, the video was an hour long, thanks to my muttering and indecision. Maybe you noticed all the cuts, haha. The journal is not particularly autumn, but it also reminds me of this soft season. The leaves are starting to turn here and things are drying up, but the blue sky and the golden light is spectacular.
@@BeAgainBooks Indecision must be my middle name. I had to edit mine down a lot for today, too. Your edits were nicely done and I didn’t really notice. It’s nice to know I’m not alone in trying to decide. Your video was great and very helpful.
I just want to thank you so much for this! It is nice to have a guide to go by, it makes it all come together so nicely! Thank you for taking time to teach!
You’re just making me blush Sioned, haha! I’m really glad that you are excited about all of this and feel confident to go forward. Hurray! Thanks for watching.

Hi Kathleen! I also have some reader digests books that I could use for a journal. What size did you make your signatures for that particular journal series? My general question is do you generally leave a 1/2” shorter signature pages than journal cover? Does my question make sense? Thank you
Ohhh! I do not leave that much room. On a very large book (it seems to me) that might work, but I think 1/4” would be as much as I would go - at least the top and bottom measurement. I often use the end paper as a guide, especially in the Reader’s Digest cover. It is usually just a little less that 1/4”. I may cut a little more off on the opening edge, depending on what I might want to hang over the right edge, right? But I can always trim off later if I have a large fabric ruffle or large tabs. but that would be a personal preference. In general, for a Reader’s Digest journal, I usually trim the regular papers at 7 1/4” by 10 1/2” and then fold. Thanks for making your question more clear for me - Covid brain is real, haha.
Terry - I always choose a cover before I make signatures, so the paper gets trimmed based on the size of the cover. I don’t always decorate the cover, but I usually know the size. If, for some reason, I don’t have a cover chosen ahead of time, it would be because I’m using an unusual or special paper. If that happens, everything else is cut to fit around that. Maybe I’ve misunderstood your question. If that’s the case please ask again. Thanks so much for watching and for reaching out.
Are there any artists who decorate the pages before binding? Have you ever done so? It seems like it would solve some problems, but create others. 😂 But i ask because I keep having post-binding problems and regrets. And working in tight folds by the spine, etc. But the probs might be because it's only my second book. Thanks for any thoughts you have on this.
@@eetoved1758 Oh yes! Many people seem to do their pages first. I have done this only occasionally. I much prefer to bind the journal and then decorate. I think it may be because I generally make writing journals and the focus is on the space for journaling, rather than decoration. Binding the journal first limits the decoration to what will fit in the spine. This, of course, leads to the issues that you have run into - tight spaces and the risk of gator mouth (which I really do not like) AND ending up with a giant book that is difficult to use. Some decorating has to be done before binding, so there is planning that has to take place, haha. But, in general I bind first, and if I run out of room for decorating ideas, I just finish up and make a second journal. It just depends on what you like and what the journal IS meant to be - in my mind. Thanks for asking.
