Muslims have always had a special love for cats. The Quran describes dogs as being unclean animals, not worthy of being allowed to live indoors. It doesn't condone abuse towards dogs, just that it's dirty and filthy to share the inside of your house with one. Cats, on the other hand, are considered fine as indoor pets. In fact, the Prophet Muhammad himself had several pet cats, and may have even been a cat hoarder. There's a famous story about the time when he heard the morning call to prayer, but his cat "Muezza" was sleeping on the sleeve of his robe. So, rather than wake his beloved pet, he simply cut the sleeve from his robe so that he could join the call to prayer, and Muezza could continue sleeping!
