    I have to say, I thought your Dad's makeshift post support was going to be a set of bushcraft nun-chucks and I got excited, but still useful nonetheless. I vote to dig out under the stump/trunk of the ash to make a subterranean shelter.

    At the right side of the trunk, there is a little alcove or grotto formed. Pack some dirt at the very back and under to seal the area from wind and rain. Then later when it is raining, you can add a tent roof over the area for a small sitting place. Thanks for the video. Jon

    Great camp! As for recommendations:
    Trunk: Cut it at a diagonal to leave a strong foot support, and use the flat face for carving and charcoal drawing. Great project for small kids.
    Back left of trunk: Small watchtower. Perfect for spotting and filming wildlife, and fits into the theme.
    Right of trunk: A hammock. Sink an eye bolt into the trunk and make a tripod to string it between.

    The out shoot from the tree roots, I think you should use it as a stable point to make a table to eat at. It would be right next to your cooking area.

  • @vorlon010
    @vorlon010 2 ปีที่แล้ว +28

    For the two areas around the trunk, I'm thinking make one the main 'living' area, while the other is a store and working area, and keep the trunk height as part of the division. One of the other comments suggested carving shelves into it and I think that's a neat idea.
    You could maybe look at using some of the clay you're on to make a kiln or similar for making bricks or slate, or possibly use some of the space for tanning or meat/fish smoking. Long term even you could make it a more elaborate workspace - maybe even something crazy like a forge, with a more elaborate sleeping and lounging area on the opposite side of the trunk.

    Yeh, just trim back the top half of the log and keep the bottom the natural length. Maybe level the top out for a level bench, but don't do anything to stress the integrity of the base of it. Great work you and your dad are doing. Love watching your videos. Thank you for another great show!

    Where the trunk sticks out instead of cutting it, I'd use it to my advantage and use it as some sort of table-ish type thing. I would also put some sort of awning type deal in the crook of the tree root to keep you dry or shaded. Just something small to add to the character of the root.

    Personally, I'd be apt to leave that extended portion of the tree root system as-is. The green moss on it is striking, and leaving it more natural helps it maintain it's "wildness" and center of focus for your camp. :D You're already building all sorts of kitchen work area, and other features for comfort and to add options for use so it's not like you "need" to make it into a table, bench or whatever! :D Cheers from the USA

    6:07 Integrate the trunk into a sleeping area. Could you imagine waking up in the morning with the trunk of the tree as your ceiling? And then make it kind of a fold-away kinda deal so you can still use the space for other things during the day or when you're not there. If you want to get closer to nature, sleeping under a tree is about as close as you're going to get, lol.
    Ooh... or better yet... depending on how much work you want to do... Build yourself a small bunker with timber/wood supports and have the entrance be under the tree trunk... That would be really cool, but a LOT of work...
    17:54 The only comment I've got about the kitchen is to overlap some planks over the cracks in the little covering so you don't get water through the cracks if you're trying to cook in the rain...
    19:27 Instead of cutting all the way down to the split on the root, figure out a good sitting height and cut into the top section to make it level where it'll be most comfortable to sit on. You could then adjust your fire position so you can tend it while sitting on the tree root bench. :D

  • @dpax100
    @dpax100 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Trimming down the LH trunk section would make a nice bench or work top. As you say removing it may destabilise the whole root/trunk. A camp hut on either side would be cool. 👍

    I continue to LIKE your thinking on this project. Taking the top section of that root and seeing what happens is sound. I might shorten the bottom root for ease of getting around it when the project is finished. You seem to be creating an unusual structure: roofing it should be a challenge, as well. Beds and benches need the focal point of a fire. This could be your chance to build a 'professional' one with your day, proper mortar/cement, and firebricks for the lining.

    Nice one mate! I had the same thoughts on the last episode on integrating that big trunk more. Glad you did it! On the left side of the trunk i can already picture a small shelter with one bed, tucked in at the side of camp. The piece of the trunk that sticks out could be utilized for a low front wall of that shelter to kind of frame it in or as support for the bed. Looking forward to the next episode, I´m personally hoping for a clay pizza oven ;)

  • @sjoerdmhh
    @sjoerdmhh 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I like the moss covered bit of the trunk. So if you decide to cut it, I'd try and find a nice new spot for it. Also, when you were pick-axing your way into that rough but nice forest soil, all I could think is how that top bit of soil would be awesome for plants. So try and save/collect it, perhaps to make some raised beds in a sunny corner of the camp and grow tall peas and runner beans in it, with some spinach and shade-tolerant decorative plants (foxgloves are probably native in your woods and those with ferns look beautiful). The sooner you start on the gardening bit, the better, because it takes time to grow (and foxgloves are biennial).
    Just some ideas from a plant lover.

    The changes are awesome! If purpose of fence is to deter critters, why not stack half circles of wood into the openings next to tree trunk? For cutting outrigger of trunk, you are wise to be careful of removing load bearing sections. A flat bench would be a great way to make useful without removing too much wood. And don’t do it without spotter in case it splits while cutting!

    That post holder your dad made could also be used as tongs. Like when getting coals from the fire for things.

    You could make a dugout shelter under the trunk with a roof/wall leaned up against it to give more horizontal space. Either tarp it over or cover it in dead leaves and such to make it breathable and water resistant.

    The area by the trunk/roots would make a nice covered seating and sleeping area.

    The ash tree trunk needs to be part of camp 11:50 now you can build a rest area under the trunk of 🌳.
    The camp living 15:32 area is more inviding.
    Will you be allowing hikers/campers 17:44 to stay in nature preserved forest?

    Great work! I'd love to see all that clay put to use in the camp, an oven/fireplace and some pottery would be awesome!
