I feel like kayak fishing has changed the game and it's going to get so many younger folks off the bank and on the water. I'd love a video on how you break down water on your kayak since you don't use a fishfinder and how you have applied what you've learned from college fishing to the kayak.
flat stern canoe with trolling motor is the answer. Actually works to paddle manually, great range on the battery because its an efficient hull, can actually carry stuff and move around, can go on the roof of your car.
I don’t have alot of money but I go fishing in river and the sea, every now and then I would go to a lake and if I get a kayak probably to the lake way more so which one do you recommend for that
Hmmm I would fear the stability and space of a jon boat that small. Not sure anything like that exists. I think you want to have 10' at a minimum for jon boats.
My first boat ever is a 2019 Alumacraft 12' Jon Boat. Then I needed a trailer so I got a Harbor Freight cheepo that I put pressure treated plywood and carpet on. Then I needed a trolling motor, then I decided that was way to slow so I got a 6hp outboard Mercury. Then I put swivel seat bases and seats in it, a Bimini top modified to fit the 36" wide hull, Walmart cupholders and industrial double back tape... Then I needed the safety gear required... All in all counting everything the Jon Boat cost $3,500 give or take for everything, but it's all new with warranties and it was a fun project! My Lifetime Cruze sit in Kayak was $213 with tax and came with the paddle, yeeah that's pretty much all it needed besides a pfd and a sun hat and you are good to go. Joking aside I love both of them to death!
got a Classic Accessories Colorado XT inflatable pontoon.... my girlfriend and I both own one and it's awesome. Threw the oars away and put a trolling motor on... just sweet
You should try out fishing out of a float tube. They are amazing on small ponds and it allows you to hit the angles. It will blow your mind how much more fish you can catch. Where as with a kayak or John boat you're fumbling with stuff most the time
It honesty just has to fit you. I ordered one from Wal-Mart for about 150 dollars. And there are tons of attachments. You just need to look around and find on that suits your needs. I use kick fins on calm days (that's what I prefer) but on windy ways flippers are the way to go or the wind will drift you away haha
One thing I don't think you considered was the cheaper plastic 2-man "jon-boat" type boats like the Sun Dolphin pro 120. Can easily slap an electric trolling motor, or use a paddle, and that option for a 2nd person is always there. The biggest issue I have is storage, and getting it to/from the lake. a Kayak can easily be slapped in the bed of my truck or on my wifes car even, and I can launch it pretty much anywhere there's shoreline good enough to walk up to. with a bigger jon boat, not so much. probably need a trailer unless its smaller and can fit in the bed of my truck, and probably not gunna be able to 1-man lift it in/out of the truck and in/out of the water... That being said, I'm not a fan of the sitting position and how low to the water it is in a Kayak. I like being able to stand, and sit in a more normal chair sitting position as my situation needs.. Edit: Also, what about 10ft "pontoon" style boats? like a Pelican 10E?
Great points! Thank you for sharing this detailed comment - I certainly appreciate you adding value to the community :) the smaller boats such as pontoons and the Sun Dolphin as you mentioned are certainly a good option as well. I personally wouldn't want to bring them anywhere that has too heavy of wind, but that tends to be the case for a kayak as well. The reason I chose to speak about only a kayak vs Jon Boat is that I know people are making their decisions between the two and I have experience with both. I have less experience with the boats you mentioned so I didn't think to bring them up. Regarding your thoughts on the kayak, I completely understand that. You might look at the FeelFree Lure 11.5, which I will have a new video on tomorrow. This kayak is big and sturdy, so you can stand comfortably. It also features an incredibly comfortable "gravity seat" which can be moved up and down in height. Thanks again for your feedback! Have an excellent day!
I kayak fish when alone or limited access lakes, dragging and lugging through woods. Jon boat for wife or kid fishing on flat lakes and pond. its a proven fact the more watercraft strewn across your yard, the more stable you are are.
I’m in this exact position. I was just about to pull the trigger on a 2019 Vibe Sea Ghost 130 but today I’m going to look at a 14’ Jon boat with 2 mounted seats, a 3.5 hp motor, a trolling motor, and a trailer for the same price. I’ve fished a boat many many times but never owned one myself and I’m also not mechanically inclined, so I’m not sure about the Jon boat. I fish the Escambia River and the delta flats for bass, reds, and specks. What do you guys think? Vibe Sea Ghost 130 or 14’ Jon boat??
Personally, I’d go kayak solely because I find the process so much more fun. That said, I’d go test paddle the kayak and see how it feels. Then think whether you will want to take a friend with you when you fish. Depending on those two answers, I think you’ll be able to decide. Can’t go wrong either way my man! 🤠👊🏽
Online Outdoorsman Yes indeed, pros and cons to both. I like the portability and minimal maintenance of the kayak as well as the “at one with nature” aspect. I like the ability to take someone along and cover more water with the Jon boat. I fish a river system and delta “most” of the time, so I pulled the trigger on the Jon boat this morning. It was just too good of a deal to pass up at the moment. I’m going to add a simple, detachable, carpeted front casting deck to her. Next summer I’ll get the yak...maybe then I can get a 2019 model at a discount. But I’m on the water and off the shore now! Look out you fish, I’m coming for ya!! Thanks for the videos, brother. Keep up the great work! 👊🏻😎
Thank you! I’m glad you got something that fits your style!! I would definitely keep your eyes peeled for kayaks in the fall; some dealers get rid of demo kayaks for next to nothing. Holler if you ever have any more questions my friend 🤠
We got a Jon-Boater in the house! They can be super badass rigs; I will definitely own one again someday. Probably more of a 16' semi-v boat I can camp out of too.
I've seen these fishing paddle boats at Academy sports here in Florida. Do you think it's just as good as a kayak? Planning on getting a kayak right now, but if a paddle boat is better and can hold three people that good also.
Great question - I would personally say that a fishing kayak will be a much more comfortable ride which will cover water more effectively and will perform better with regards to fishing. With that being said, if you put a trolling motor on one of the little plastic scamps, that can be a good boat for small waters as well which will hold two people rather than one. Let me know if you have any follow-up questions!
For sure! I’d say that you can bring that on either option to be honest. Many of the kayaks on the market today have space for a cooler and gear. It really depends on what you are comfortable with on the water. If you want more room to move around, obviously the jon boat could be a better route.
Kayak I think is what I'll go with then. Easier to move, and when I don't have my truck I won't be able to move a Jon boat without a trailer. Don't want a boating license right now which is why whatever Jon boat I get would be paddles. Just can't bring my friends without a kayak or canoe lol.
Yeah, it can be a tough decision but I don't think you will regret it. Kayaks are super fun to fish out of. Make sure to do some research and look at several so you find the right boat for you. Best of luck :)
The jon boat is better you can turn that into an air boat with harbor freight motor and reduction drive and prop. For getting on the water fast the yak is better. I'd choose the jon.
100% agree! That is a super under-valued part of kayak fishing that we need to talk about more. Gotta love getting a good exercise while catching fish!
i hate siting in a kayak trying to fish ...i have done it but sitting in a swivel chair is Way better Jon boats are not very stable unless you get at least a 14 footer and above My vote is the build an old style wooden Garvey Much more stable than a Jon
Love the kayak, I have an out back, I can go anywhere a boat can go’ and now with an added trolling motor, I can zip around anywhere ‘ sea or lake ‘ adventure, fun, and awesome when fish on ‘ off a kayak ! Boats to big, heavy and cost the earth !
Yesssss Anthony I think we would get along just fine :) sounds like you have an amazing rig! Would love to see it; if you have instagram, you should send me a pic!
Yesss!!!! My husband and I have been debating Jon boat vs kayak! This is a great start to help us rule out which to get! Thanks for this I will definitely show him!! Totally off topic but maybe like a getting ready for spring video? Like what would catch the biggest bass?
Great suggestion (actually was planning on it anyways) - That is convenient that I uploaded this when you were thinking about it anyways! Let me know if you have any questions :)
You didn't cover anything lol....you only said the most obvious to anyone with more than five brain cells - you need a vehicle that can pull a trailer, more space and things with motors break. :D
I feel like kayak fishing has changed the game and it's going to get so many younger folks off the bank and on the water.
I'd love a video on how you break down water on your kayak since you don't use a fishfinder and how you have applied what you've learned from college fishing to the kayak.
Killer suggestion buddy! I will keep that one in mind for sure :)
flat stern canoe with trolling motor is the answer. Actually works to paddle manually, great range on the battery because its an efficient hull, can actually carry stuff and move around, can go on the roof of your car.
Love this idea my man! I should have brought canoes into the conversation as well, as they are a super fun option! Thanks for commenting 🤠
I don’t have alot of money but I go fishing in river and the sea, every now and then I would go to a lake and if I get a kayak probably to the lake way more so which one do you recommend for that
Great video from back in the day
Thanks buddy!
Kayaks are great for river fishing too. A good quality kayak is built to handle hitting logs or rocks.
Absolutely - I meant more for the anglers that would like to get around quicker without damaging a boat (versus fiberglass). Great point though!
How about a small Jon Boat that will fit in or on my 1991 Colony Park Wagon? Is there such a thing (6 or 7 feet long)?
Hmmm I would fear the stability and space of a jon boat that small. Not sure anything like that exists. I think you want to have 10' at a minimum for jon boats.

@@FishAnything I love it, very special as it's my first boat and got me back into outdoorsey stuff again :-D Thanks!
I don't know if you have done it but I would love to learn how to fly fish. Everything from seting up the poles to the fishing.
Excellent suggestion... I will certainly keep it in mind however I am still learning as well :)
got a Classic Accessories Colorado XT inflatable pontoon.... my girlfriend and I both own one and it's awesome. Threw the oars away and put a trolling motor on... just sweet
That sounds really cool Ben! Thanks for sharing :)
I have a 10ft jon boat and I put it on my roof rack lol works good for me and my boys!! And yes I load it my self.
Sounds like a good setup! You must be jacked 💪🏾💪🏾😺
@@FishAnything 😂😂😂 5'11 150lbs

@@FishAnything I mean I dont like to brag but you know lmao
This is what I need!! Thanks for sharing
Don't discount the versatility of boats like the Pelican Bass Raider 10E or Bass Hunter boats. I absolutely love my 8' Bass Hunter.
Awesome suggestion John - thanks for sharing! This completely slipped my mind but you are so right :)
My choice, too.
I always see em at dicks sporting goods at cabelas, they look kinda cool but they’re so big and bargelike

Love it gonzo! Why choose between the two when you could have both?! :)
Online Outdoorsman thanks, keep your videos coming I enjoy your enthusiasm
Why in the yard? I put the Jon Boat in the shed out back, and threw the Kayak on top :-P Out of sight, happy neighbors lol.
I am using a jon boat in my area. We have something called alligators here . Nice video tho.
Haha that’s fair! I don’t have any of them to worry about in MI!

Jon boat all the way. Still take them to the river, and lake.

Wait if I want to bring a cooler full of cold drinks and a tackle box? Seems like a Jon boat can hold more or at least bulkier gear than a yak.
For sure! I’d say that you can bring that on either option to be honest. Many of the kayaks on the market today have space for a cooler and gear. It really depends on what you are comfortable with on the water. If you want more room to move around, obviously the jon boat could be a better route.

Loved the video.
Haha glad it worked out! Yeah I drink a lot of coffee and that was truly a part of this series when it used to run weekly.
Online Outdoorsman I love it too bro. I’ve recently moved to Australia, and the coffee here is simply heavenly. Starbucks did not develop here.
I tend to prefer the caddis navigator float tube, I like the feel of water between my legs
You are a strange, strange man Pook
I really have a boat, and a kayak, with no way of towing the boat (no trailer hitch on my suv yet) and the kayak has to go through the trunk😂
Hahaha now that’s dedication!
Where u get that shirt ?
Amazon - I just linked it in the bio! It was an amazing find :)
I like the kayak because you can exercise while fishing
100% agree! That is a super under-valued part of kayak fishing that we need to talk about more. Gotta love getting a good exercise while catching fish!
I live 30 minutes from Manhattan! Really love the jersey! Go Cats

Jon boat with trolling motor 600-1000. Kayak with ft pedal 3-4k
I think we can all agree there is a massive spectrum of prices for both!
I have a kayak and a boat. The longer I keep the boat, the closer I get to getting a divorce. It is just expensive to maintain.
Wellllllll I would vote kayak in that case!
:)

Why settle? Just get the best of both worlds in one... with a _canoe!_
Love a good session in a canoe! Not quite as comfortable as a kayak but definitely gives you some great options!
A canoe might be best if you want to stick with one boat. It's not the best at anything but it's pretty good at most things.
