gangAvataraNam🙏 - Emperor asit of (ikShvAku dynasty) had two wives, elder wife gave poison to kill younger wife's foetus, however due to grace of bhrgu maharshi, younger wife gave birth to a baby 'with poison' (sa gara) called sagara. - Emperor 'sagara' of Ikshvaku dynasty who was very righteous and had 2 wives (dakshiNa nAyakatva), 'kEsini' who also was dharmiShTa (righteous), and 'sumati' who was the most beautiful one and the daughter of ariShTanEmi (pseudonym of Kashyapa prajapati). However, they were unhappy due to childlessness. - So, all 3 of them went to Himalayas for doing penance to please bhrgu maharshi, who appeared and said even before they asked for any boon, and said, "one will give birth to vamshakara and other gives birth to many sons". - Instead of humbly accepting rishi vAk as prasAdam, wives asked out of curiosity, who will be who out of those two? bhrgu smiled and said, "why don't you choose yourself?". Then, first wife kEsini asked for 'one son who is vamsha kara', and sumati asked for '60,000 sons who would be famous and enthusiastic (mahOtsAhAn bahu putra)'. Then rishi said "tat astu". - Asamanjasa took birth from kEsini and sumati gave birth to a cluster of 60k embryos (premature babies), who were incubated and nurtured in pots. - Asamanjasa had a sadistic habit of killing other kids playing with him, by drowning them in sarayu river. People were scared to complain to his father sagara, but one day father came to know and excommunicated him by banishing him from the capital. Though he is the elder son on whom the father has extreme love, he got rid of him only to support dharma as the ruler. This example taught Rama that to stand for dharma, his ancestor even excommunicated his eldest son (dharma > love). - Asamanjasa already had a son, 'Anshuman', who was extremely brave, righteous, kind and compassionate. With assistance of grandson Anshuman and also assistance of 60k sagara-kumaras (sumati sons), grandfather sagara also performed 'aShvamEdha' yagna. After mentioning this, Vishwamitra tried to proceed, but Rama humbly asked Vishwamitra to explain further what happened next. - The horse left in aShwamEdha was hidden by Indra through mAya. In search of horse, 60k over-enthusiastic sons with their diamond-strong nails, dug out the whole earth which is 60k yOjanas (1 yOjana = 12.8 km) into pits and even reached pAtALa but couldn't find it, and went back to their father. They saw dishA-gajas, elephants carrying the weight of earth in four cardinal directions: 'virUpAksha' (east), 'mahA padma' (south), 'saumanasa' (west), and 'bhadra' (north), which vAlmIki mentioned in the auspicious direction of pradakshiNa as sign of respect. - All rishis, devatas, yakshas, kinneras, kimpurushas, went to caturmukha-brahma to protect Earth from sagara-kumars being spoilt by digging with nails, killing so many lifeforms, caturmukha brahma said: "yasyEyam vasudhA krtsnA vAsudEvasya-dhImata: kApilam rUpamAsthAya dhArayat anisham dharAm tasya kOpAgninA dagdhA bhavishyanti nrpAtmajA:" Meaning: This Earth belongs to Vasudeva, He always protects it, why should you even worry about it? He will take care of it in His own terms for the disrespect and abuse done to earth". This also taught Rama (and to us) that nobody can own even a bit of earth, it is only human stupidity and illusion that somebody owns a piece of earth. - So, Indra tied the horse outside the hermitage of kapila maharshi, son of kardhama prajApati and dEvahUti, the avatAr of viShNu. Sagara-kumaras immediately thought kapila stole the horse, and went on a fight with Him out of their congenital nature which is over-enthusiasm. Kapila's tapas was disturbed and angered, resulting in a 'hunkAra' (sigh of "huh") that generated 'kOpAgni' (fire of anger) that turned 60k sagara-kumaras into 60k heaps of ash. - Anshuman went in search of horse and found horse tied near kapilAshrama and 60k ash-heaps of his uncles, grieved their loss, worried and ran to find water to offer 'jala-tarpaNa' to his uncles before taking horse to his grandfather. Then Garuda appeared in front of his nephew, Anshuman (Garuda is brother of sumati) and said, water of this world cannot quench their thirst, only heavenly river water of Ganga can give sadgati to his uncles. This taught young Rama (through Him, to humanity) that taking horse back to his grand father (to complete yajna) is not more important than offering tarpaNa to one's ancestors. That's the only way to quench their thirst and facilitate their sadgati. - Finding no way to bring Ganga, Sagara, his grandson Anshuman, and his son, Dileepa all ruled earth with dharma, but always grieved that they couldn't offer water to their ancestors. - Dileepa's son Bhageerata heard the story from his royal Gurus, and felt very grieved, and took a vow to bring Ganga (bhagIratha pratigna) thereby sacrificing his whole empire and went to 'gOkarNa kshEtra' (Gokarna) to perform tough penance (ghOra tapa) in favor of brahma by doing 'Urdhva bAhu:, pancatapA, mAsAhArO, jitEndriya, for 1000-years. Brahma was pleased, appeared and asked what he wanted. Bhageerata told that his 60k great grandfathers' prEtas were not releases due to lack of jalatarpaNa, and also askwd not to ever have childlessness in his dynasty. Brahma immediately granted his second request, and told that earth cannot bear the cascading force of falling Ganga, only 'shUli' (the one with trishUla, shiva), can bear the force of Ganga, and disappeared. - Now Bhageerata started second penance in favor of shiva as 'vAyu bakshO, nirAshraya, acala: sthanuvat' for 1 year. Shiva pleased by him appeared and said He would bear Ganga (out of extreme compassion, even before Bhageerata asked what he wanted). Shiva opened his locks all around the universe and looked above towards Ganga. Ganga saw this and smiled assuming that Shiva cannot hold her force and jumped on the auspicious locks of Shiva for several years. Shiva observed this and stopped even one drop to fall down to teach Her a lesson, which rotated like a whirlpool for several years arresting her flow. - Bhageerata did penance again to please Shiva to giveup insult of Ganga and release her. Shiva was pleased and released small stream gentle enough for the earth to bear. Flowing mother Ganga followed Bhageerata, which was observed with awe and surprise by all worlds how Ganga shined on earth with her beautiful flow, with her full of life, how she followed chariot of Bhageerata. Observing Ganga that touched shiva locks ran to Ganga and came in vimAnAs from different worlds to dip their hands and sprinkle on their heads. - Rage of Ganga flow washedboff the yaga-vATikas, ashramas of jahnu maharshi, enraged by which he did just one Acamana and drank off all water of Ganga. Seeing this, Bhageerata fell on jahnu's feet to excuae the nature of a river to wash off anything in its course. Jahnu was eased by Bhageerata and released Her from his right ear, as His daughter, jAhnavi. - Ganga flowed further close to kapilAshrama and washed off the 60k ash heaps releasing their prEtatva and sending them to swarga lOka. Seeing this Brahma came on His swan and appeared in front of Bhageerata and told that this is near-impossible for a human being to have accomplished what he did, he probed that nothing is impossible if had strong will to do it, exceptional deed, from now the tripada-ga Ganga (flows in three worlds, heaven, earth and pAtALa) will be from now be called as 'bhAgIrathi' as your daughter. - This is the highest example of human possibility, determination and perseverance. Hearing this, Rama was awestruck with His ancestors, His heart was filled with happiness and values held high by His ancestors, and also felt huge responsibility to live up to His ancestors. - Valmiki did not give phalastuti (@ 1:33:40) to any AkhyAna except gangAvataraNa and shaNmukhOtpatti in Ramayana. This proves their exceptional auspiciousness. After this, the way we look, feel, drink, or bathe in Mother Ganga should change with respect towards the great sacrifices of our ancestors. 🙏🙏🙏
