    Your storytelling on this one was next level outstanding. The TH-cam tile telegraphed a tire issue. The opening was a great point in time teaser for things to come. You lulled us with a nice cooking demo along with the sketchy red truck…..then hit us at the end with a catastrophic wheel loss. I really appreciated your openness on the initial shock reaction in not believing your eyes….thats exactly how most of us would react. Bravo!

    Wow, what a difference between a wheel disaster in an RV Fifth wheel compared to a Class A. I saw a TH-cam video where a blowout basically destroyed the Class A because it took out so much of the control system and much of it didn't even seem to be documented. Something to consider. I'm glad that this situation worked out so well for you both.

  • @artking2994
    @artking2994 หลายเดือนก่อน +37

    Per one other person mentioned, your low fuel mileage was due to the wheel bearing going out, basically like a brake on one wheel continually on, till it finally blew out. I always check each wheel every so often to check if a bearing is heating up (lack of grease or too tight/loose). Be careful as a wheel hub could get red hot, and checking the wheel/rim first to see if it's hotter then check the hub if you feel it is different then than others. A IR gun will do the same to check each hub. It could have been worse!! Now a little back tracking you might be able to find the rim/tire?

    • @motolyfe
      @motolyfe หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Should always feel the rims & hubs for excessive heat & the difference between all wheels by feel or even a lazer temperature gun

  • @anthonystanley7132

    When I stop for rest breaks or fuel stops, I use a laser thermometer to check the wheel hub close as I can to the bearing location. After you do this a few times you will get an ideal of what is normal and be able to see when abnormal heat condition starts to occur.

  • @iantaylor4868
    @iantaylor4868 หลายเดือนก่อน +38

    You should all walk around and feel the center cap on the wheels with every stop to see if there's excessive heat.with doing that would have for sure prevented this from happening. Just my 2 cents .

    • @ceimo856
      @ceimo856 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      I use a laser temp gun, quick and accurate

    • @typhoon2245
      @typhoon2245 29 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      It most likely would have, but not guaranteed to have caught it. Very well could have been the last straw after the last stop. Like mentioned below, a laser temp gun is a fast way to check at stops but it too is only as good at where things sit at the last stop. Obviously still good advice to walk around with either temp gun or your hand at each stop though.

    • @gajeep94yj
      @gajeep94yj 16 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I do that every time. I've lost two axles from bearings over heating. Happened both times within 30 min of normal temps.
      My point is, when they go, they often go without any warning and VERY quickly....

    I've owned 50+ trailers from 1000 lb utility to 24k tandem duels the only trailer bearings weren't trash was the 24k "oil bath". I've seen brand new trailers with mismatched spindles, over tight to loose, not enough grease if at all. Once a year and defiantly when new I pull every hub.

    I feel your pain. We were on our way to the Oshkosh Airshow this summer, and stopping for our niece's baby shower. Another car passed us and pointed to the back wheel. We immediately stopped. One of the bearings had failed. Smoke was coming out of the hub. We could have had a fire! Anyway, it was a Sunday, and we got a wrecker to take the trailer to an RV dealer in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. It needed a whole new axle! Or course, they couldn't get one for 3 weeks!! Instead of staying with relatives for 3 weeks, flying home (we had a 12 pound cat), or renting a hotel room, we decided to cut our losses and drive back to Arizona. Then, We had to drive all the way back to get it and basically ruined our summer. But, that's not the end of the story. When we came back to get it, we found out they had one of the new Alliance 23MLs coming in. So, we drove all the way back home only to get a call later that it was on it's way there. So, we worked out a trade, and pulled it all the way back to Iowa... again!! Still not the end of the story.. While on the way back, we lost a trailer tire in NE Kansas! I was walking around the trailer checking tire pressures, and saw the rim, with no tire... There was no other damage, thankfully, but... We ended up buying a new truck from our nephew, a new 5th wheel, and driving two trucks back to Arizona. And that is the story of our 2024 summer!

    We had a similar situation a couple of years ago while leaving Moab, Utah. The entire wheel assembly sheared off the lug bolts and careened off into opposing traffic. Fortunately, it did not hit anything or cause any further damage to anyone else, but it was sure scary. Just like you, we didn't know that anything was wrong except some minor vibrations in the fifthwheel.
    We were fortunate that there was a mobile RV guy in Moab, who came out and replaced the hub and put our spare tire on it so we could limp into a KOA in Green River. Next day we went into a tire store and we were able to get another spare to see us through the rest of the trip.
    Now, I'm very conscious about using my IR to check wheel temperatures every time I stop for gas.
    We were VERY lucky.

    So much for TPMS. This is why I have 2 cameras under the chassis so while driving I can inspect all 6 tires from the cab.
    The trailer axle is also easier to parts in an emergency like this than the Morryde Independent Suspension. Drums and bearings can be found all over, a complete ISS and rotor.... good luck!

    • @mikewelti112
      @mikewelti112 22 วันที่ผ่านมา

      TPMS detect loss of pressure in the tire, and most of them detect heat. The heat detection is at the valve stem not the bearings or axle. It totally makes sense that it didn't set off an alarm.

    • @Itsa_Mea
      @Itsa_Mea 22 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @mikewelti112 did you miss the part that the wheel (and sensor) left the chat. The system should of set an alert as soon as it lost signal. PLUS, by the look of that axle it had to put heat into that wheel. TPMS are hit or miss. This case, huge miss.

    I thought you guys had the wheel bearings serviced. If not, one thing I do is always check your wheel hubs for excessive temperatures when we stop. Waik around the trailer and feel your rims close to the lug nuts. An inexpensive heat gun can make that easy to monitor. I'm surprised your tire monitor didn't show a temp increase in the tire! Hopefully the spindle was ok!.

    So glad you are all okay. The same thing happened to us in 2019, towing a shorter 5th wheel on I-77 in northern North Carolina. Driving up & down the hills in that area we did not hear anything unusual. A passing driver kept pointing to where is missing tire should have been. We pulled over and saw we were missing the rear tire (like you), and all of the lug nut bolts were stripped off. We did a slow crawl to a small camp ground who had names of RV repairmen, and a good tire company in town. We were delayed about 3 days, but everything turned out well. Wishing the same for you.

    That happened to us a few years ago in a remote part of BC. We’d been to a gas station just before and figure that we’d turned the rig on a tight radius (to clear an obstacle in the parking lot) and that had dragged the wheel a bit sideways, causing a lot of pressure, breaking the lug nuts. We didn’t realise the wheel was gone until another motorist flagged us down on the highway. Luckily for us we were within eyesight of a campsite so limped in. After that event (it took days to get new parts and a repair in that area) we named our rig “Lucille” as it sounded very close to “Loose Wheel” and we’d sing the Kenny Rogers song sometimes after that. At the time it was stressful and expensive so watching your video takes me right back and I really feel for you guys.

    We drive to Ohio from Oregon at least once every year. I was stationed at Ellsworth AFB, just East of Rapid City, for 5 years and we now stop in the Custer area in the Blackhills for a couple of weeks when we pass through. The predominant winds come from the North and West and can be quite strong. Also traveling West on I-90 you are actually going uphill the entire time (I know -it looks flat). So your mileage will suffer due to head winds and uphill travel. I have a 2020 GMC Denali dually diesel long bed crew cab with a Host Mammoth Truck camper. I’ve actually had the camper shift/twist in the bed from the strong winds. Should you get to spend some time in the Blackhills be sure to checkout the Crazyhorse Memorial. It’s definitely worth the price of admission. Safe travels from beautiful Oregon!!

    Always always always go by the pressure on the tire sidewall. I have extensive tire experience so I'm telling you to run maximum air pressure stated on the sidewall of the tire. That's what holds the load. The tire is simply an air bladder. And a good rule of thumb is to trash ST (special trailer) tires all together and install LT ( light truck) tires. I could go on and on about this. Great video ❤❤❤

We do have a different brand of TPMS, and maybe another one might have notified you? By the time you posted this I'm hoping you've been able to fix it and possibly salvage some of your boondocking trip--you'll need the time off, for sure. We also appreciate the automatic continuation of the video--it's such a real possibility for anyone going down the road and my first thought is if the wheel isn't there, where is it, and is it posing a danger to other motorists? After trying unsuccessfully to get it fixed nearby, on a Sunday, and then spending the night, and again failing on Monday to find a place that could fix it, I ended up driving a few hundred miles on it (carefully, checking and greasing the remaining wheel every 30 miles or so) to get home, and eventually getting a local machine shop to weld on a new axle. Crazy! I had greased the trailer wheels before I left on the trip, but apparently water got in the hub while lauching/retrieving the boat. Others told me that happens a lot, when the water heats up and displaces the grease, then the bearing goes. But obviously, you weren't submerging your trailer wheels in water!

    Wow! That was shocking and crazy that you all didn't feel a thing. Back to the Love's RV Stops.. I have not come across any that were $20, I have seem more often around $45. I did stay at one in TX. It was actually pretty good. This one was gated, with a code to get in, the sites were all concrete & level, the connections were in good locations. This one in Sweetwater had 2 dog parks, pickleball courts, covered pavilions w/tables & a wood fire pit with firewood! Not sure if all, but there is a Good Sam, Military & a few other discounts offered. TSD had a 10% off code too for a while. Sorry that happened (scares the crap out of me!). Safe Travels.

    Man - same exact thing happened to us a few years ago. Some guy drove by us on the 101 north of Los Angeles pointing at the RV. We thought he was pointing at our youtube stickers -but I looked back and saw that trim flashing in the wind just like you - and just like you we had lost a wheel without the TPMS indicating any problem at all. Really sucked but we were super fortunate to have an RV place that had a brake hub/bearing close by and I was able to get us back on the road within hours ( could not believe how the stars lined up to allow this ). At least nobody got hurt - so that's the good news for you guys. Great episode and hope you got this all taken care of quickly.

      @jimmycrumpler1853 tireminder. Does not detect if the whole wheel goes away. I understand some other brands have the same issue. It happens far less frequently so I guess they don't feel it's a requirement...

    I would definitely be contacting the TPS company to better understand why it didn't alarm you for the loss of signal and high temps in the tire. My Tire Minder TPS seems to be really slow to react to loss of signal, but it does let me know if temps are too high. Also, something that has saved me is using an IR temp gun to quickly check wheel bearing temps on all wheels every time we stop. On a few occasions, I was able to spot a wheel running much hotter than the rest due to the castle nut being too tight and / or a bearing issue well before it failed.

    The fact that the axle is still smoking means it happened within 10-20 miles or less from when you noticed the issue. I can relate as in 2023 had a similar incident that layed us up for 36 hours in Wisconsin. I replaced all 4 rims and tires as it was discovered the previous owner cheaped out and used the wrong rim size plus load range C tires instead of the required load range D. Also replace all the leaf springs as one set was destroyed when the tire failed. Did all the repairs myself except tire mounting. Fun times....... NOT!

    When traveling west arcross the US, pay attention to the wind direction and the elevation. I always watch for flags to see if we have a head wind, and you'll see that theres a steady incline as you go west. Albert Lea MN is at 1200', Wall SD is 2300' that steady continuous climb with a head wind will destroy mpg's and ya dont realize youre climbing. 👍😁

    RV live can be a challenge.
    Oh yeah, our tpms was USELESS! I tell folks to test it on a day they go siteseeing and leave rv in campground. Turn on monitor, see the pressures & temps before you leave
    And see how far & how long before you get a warning! Mine did 45 min later & 30 miles away!

    Sorry for your mishap with the wheel bearing it looks to me like the outside bearing didn't have enough grease. This is why we went to oil bath bearings was very easy to do with our disk brakes all we had to do is change the rear seal and the cap . It surprises me that these new expensive trailers are not going to oil bath I used to own a trucking company and that was all we used on them.

    The wind can tank your fuel mileage. I also noticed the heavy foot under acceleration. Ease off on to go pedal a bit when getting up to speed. Your truck is also new. It will get better fuel mileage when you get 50,000 miles on it.

    Glad to hear/see that you are OK and that this failure was on the passenger side since the wheel probably rolled off the road without further incident. I guess I can believe that a dual axle trailer hitched to a large truck could have this failure without either of you noticing. I pull a single axle with a small truck, I'd have an interesting time if this happened to us! Lucky you noticed the flapping. If you had driven on with three overloaded tires you could have a worse time. The TPMS would not catch the problem you had but it should eventually have told you the three remaining tires were overheating. As an engineer I'd also say that it should have warned you about lost contact with the missing tire which would have given you an earlier warning that something was amiss. TPMS manufacturers should consider a software update to add that. Many years ago, in the 1960s my late uncle John was driving the family station wagon and he felt it lurch and tilt to the left. He turned his head to check his side view mirror just in time to watch his left rear wheel roll past him! It was very obvious that something was wrong in that case but since I have an IR thermometer I will add it to our camping gear in the truck. At least your pain may save some of us from a similar fate. Good luck with the repair.

    SO SO Sorry this happened, one of the toughest RV issues when this happens. Maintenance people, wheel bearings every 12 mo. or 10-12K miles! Check hub temps at every stop, a simple touch of the wheel hub assembly. Make sure you have Hub Savers too, will keep your wheel on the rig in event of bearing failure, and possibly allow you to install a temp set of bearing and get you to safe location better suited for repairs instead of being stuck on the side of the road. Glad everyone is ok!

    DEF...I only fill my tank 2.5 gallons at a time. When my Ram says 20/40 miles left before creeping mode.
    I never buy from pump either.
    I also have a DEF % checker for the 32% in new jugs. I have returned a few because it was below 32% urethra.
    ....def stored at 72° shelve life there's a chart available for that on web.
    ....IF YOU ADD "DEF" DURING the SUMMER MONTHS with alot of def in tank like topping it off you stand the change of diluting % below 32%. Winter months not so much.

    It happens. Makes for a good story! :)
    I have a 5th-wheel brand that typically has the Morryde suspension like that and have seen several stories of it happening, but I can't say whether it happens more or less with the Morryde IS. The wheel components (bearings, etc.) are the same as other axles. Happened to me and I was stuck in Twin Falls, ID, in the winter (!), but Morryde was incredible and shipped me the whole axle assembly, pre-assembled with caliper and disk, by two-day fedex. I installed it myself, after buying a few tools.
    Can't tell from the video, but if the threads at the end of the spline are messed up, or if the spindle is otherwise damaged, you have to replace the whole assembly. Otherwise I assume you can just replace bearings and hub (and wheel and tire, and maybe caliper) and be back on the road. We actually retraced our steps and found our wheel/hub alongside the freeway.
    We also were irritated with the TPMS, but they don't seem to report "loss of signal". We had the valve stem version and after this I changed to an internal sensor in the hope that it would better catch a temperature rise next time. But I'm not convinced there would always be a warning, either from TPMS or from physical inspection. It seems to me that it if gets warm enough to notice, it is going to fail pretty quickly. Things happen.
    My incident happened on a relatively new rig with less than 5000 miles. Morryde sent the new parts under warranty, at no charge to me.

    jack up the rocker and chain it up to the frame until you can drive to a trailer store/manufacture to buy a hub wheel and tire. Also buy some bearing buddys and some really good axle grease. Hopefully the overheated bearing come off with a little warming from a welding torch. Good Luck.

    High fuel consumption I’ve found in these diesels is your air filter. From my last truck I’ve started doing it every service @12000 km. Also don’t be afraid of over servicing your truck. With the miles you burn I wouldn’t be afraid.
