It's probably the latter, which is typically English; the Lord Byron's are few and far between. Seems kind of childish for him to think that "they look down on people who write songs because they write novels about fuck all"; sounds to me like he just had some bitter experience with a writer or something. Most writers are shit, just like most people who are musicians are shit; but those who write great books and great songs are worthy of respect. Words are man's primary mode of communication, and people who can weave something beautiful with them are worth it. Amazing to hear someone who proclaims himself a "songwriter" to take these views.
