Never found much problem with the standard setup, other than adding the tweeters and some speaker behind seats. and can play at max. volume without distortion.
The standard setup isn't all that and benefits significantly from upgraded speakers and an amp. If you are happy with the standard setup that is fine but listen to an upgraded system and you wouldn't want to go back to standard. You are right about the lack of distortion though.
I have a question I have the same base stereo in my 2010 Z4 . Does the professional head unit have an amp built into it to drive the speakers or is there an external amp also in the trunk .

Good idea. The sound system on my Mx5 was far better than the one on the bmw. Might upgrade as well.
