I don't believe that story. The Soviets said the same thing about the Cuban Missle Crisis situation where a Soviet submarine got a nuclear launch alarm where 3 Soviet officers were required to retaliate with their Nukes but 1 of them (don't remember his name) felt like it was a false alarm and dissented thereby also saving the world in the process. It's just Soviet propaganda. I was born there BTW.

Hansson was probably the reason why government positions started paying costs based on locality finally. My husband was in the military during the 90s on & it was difficult to transfer from one base to another for this reason. The salary was low, housing sometimes had over a year waiting list & the new place was more expensive than the last. I'm not excusing selling out your country. Just that it was a difficult situation to be in when you got transferred to a far more expensive place

This was sooo fascinating from several aspects. The things that contributed to Hansen’s veering off the straight and narrow, his strange code of honor, his disdain for everyone around him, the ineptitude of both the FBI & the CIA, and the duping of those closest to him, and his ultimate betrayal of them. Thanks for an engrossing in-depth look at this traitor hiding in plain sight.

I’ve worked for the federal government in many different capacities all of my adult life. It bothers me to no end that Mike is saying the pay you would get in Gary Indiana is the same you’d get in any part of the state of New York. That is so ridiculous. The base pay may be the same, but the location pay, that’s where you make your money so you can live appropriately where you are. We’re a department of the army family, but all the federal agencies including all the alphabet three and four letters are similar in the way they pay. Even who pays us is a federal agency!

Fascinating story. I remember this case well. I remember being baffled at the time at the shear incompetence of our intelligence apparatus, but I don’t really know anything about how it all works. Similar to how I felt in the wake of 9/11. I kept thinking “How? How did they not know?” In the case of 9/11, I was especially incredulous because of the WTC bombing in the early 90’s. But in the case of Hanssen, it seems implausible to me that such a man could go for so long without anyone suspecting a thing. Not a single internal review over the course of 20 years clued anyone in that something was amiss? Again, just fascinating.

This is an awesome setup! Reminds me of a social at someone's house and you find someone who isn't into small talk and goes into these amazing rants and you are so sucked in you forget you're at a friend's house and that you are eating pizza rolls while you're on a journey through delicious scandals.

Another RU who doesn't get enough recognition for preventing WW3 is Vasily Arkhipov. He refused to launch nukes during the Cuban missile crisis. Men like these deserve more praise for not "simply following orders."

An interesting diversification for you Mike from covering cases of those who killed others by their own hands (or by instructing others) and I must say, into this precedent of an hour-long episode, so far you're absolutely outshone yoursel with some seriously good historical/contextual research.! From the look of some comments BTW if the makers of your shirts chose to sponsor you they'd do very well from it 😃. You're a wee diamond, many thanks for this.

Man, the longer the better. So many other You Tubers who blow up as you have post less and the stories get shorter and shorter. So I'm really impressed and always excited to see a longer one from you sir! This was very interesting, and I find no difference in this type of subject matter from the usual true crime as your style and method of delivery are distinctively one of a kind. Awesome as usual my friend. Howdy from Cleveland, Oh!🙏🖖💥
