As a Puerto Rican, this video is right on. I'd add coffee after every meal. 😉☕

Amazing video by Bright Trip! I hope you make more videos of "A Breakdown of ____ Cuisine", based on other places too. A Breakdown of Lebanese Cuisine or A Breakdown of Malaysian Cuisine... would be so awesome!

This an amazing video for those seeking a little knowledge; however, when choosing some of the vegetables, sofrito or any other Puertorican basics it needs to have a better translation of some them. i.e batata is not the regular sweet potato show in the video. Our batata is translated as boniato, which are in the same family.

OMG I can't believe it you forgot one of the most delicious fritters ALCAPURRIAS. And the Lecho Asado and morcillas. And what with the desserts? The best!

I love Puerto Rican food. I'm an Anglo mainlander, but my father worked and lived in Puerto Rico for a while. The rice and peas and spices are awesome. It kind of reminds me of Cajun food, which I have a connection to as well as my mother's family is from the Central Gulf Coast.

Also, beside the piñón, we made another version called pastelón where the ripe plantain is mash and betwen the layers we add cheese.

We have more... Thick variety of rice soups, other way of making meats, lots of combinatios, and much more... By the way, the sorullitos some people as me, fill it with cheese. Also we have alcapurrias that is a grind mix of green bananas fill with meat or crab, granitos that is a grind rice fritter, domplines in ponce, almojábanas, arepas made with coconut milk serve with stew conch meat... rice stew with chick peas or white beans, onion sauté steak serve usually with white beans, savory fried chicken served with some combinations and side dishes like ripe plantain and a slice of avocado that goes with ereything, stewed corned beff with rice and pink beans... For dessert... Tembleque, flans specially the cream cheese flan, coconut or pumkin... Arroz con dulce that is a sweet rice pudin made with coconut milk, spices and raisin... And many more.

I sooo miss that food!!!! Best food I ever had in my life! I even got to try sea turtle at a restaurant on the S.E. coast right before they went on the endangered species list. It was a monster steak as big as the platter it came on. It was incredibly tender and sweet - better than shrimp, lobster, and crab all put together! Next to flan it was my favorite thing I ever tasted. I also found out how tasty goat goat stew is! Who knew!
¡Lechón, arroz con pollo, arroz y habichuelas, flan, empanadas, paella, Coco Rico - I miss it all! Especially the corner joints that have the big roast pig in the window. ❤🐗❤😋
Someone taught me how to make a skillet casserole dish with a layer of cooked ripe plantain, seasoned ground beef, green beans, and then more ripe plantains on the top. You cooked all that first, then layered it in the skillet. It was all held together with a scrambled egg mixture poured over it all. That cooked long enough to set the egg and it was done. It was great!
And I made sure to learn how to make flan.😁 My father-in-law's wife taught me. I still make it on rare occasions. I would do it a lot more, but I'm diabetic now.

@@isabelramirez5618 I usually go with the pre-made & adjust when I have the ingredients. It’s like Maryland Crab Cakes: the Phillip’s Cakes are great, but the best will always be the homemade recipes, made with the bulk pack of lump crab meat.

Puerto Rican here. Yeeeahhhh not the most healthy diet in the world. Lots of beef, lots of fried foods (favoring vegetable oil over olive oil), and pretty sure the vegetables choices are starchy and not very nutrient rich. White rice, the core staple, is not super good for you. I remember as a kid getting "salads" that were little more than iceberg lettuce (not the most nutrient rich lettuce) and tomatoes. This video is a great overview of the cuisine, but yeah now that I'm grown and on my own, I'll be making some substitutions when I try some of these. Basmati rice, red beans, and plantains that are not fried in a gallon of oil are next on my menu.
