    But but but...
    I had my (well loved) Vortex Crossfire red dot fail one weekend, while I was out on some private property. The power/light level knob actually failed.
    (sent it back, vortex replaced the unit, no issues whatsoever. New one works just great!)
    It ruined my whole damned weekend, because my little range toy (with no backup sights) had no defined ability (for my no-skilled, non tactical wizard havin' azz), to hit out past 50 or so yards!
    I learned the value of ALWAYS having back up sights. Even on a range toy.
    (Unless you bring a LOT of range toys, in case one goes down!)
    Although I have no need to move it back, to get my light out to it's place, I'll experiment bringing it closer in, just to see if it makes things easier for my aging eyes.
    Thanks for the info! I love your vids! VERY technical breakdowns of many topics!

  • @devildog1989
    @devildog1989 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The point of the longer sight radius is parallax. The longer the sight radius the finer the adjustments on your irons. That's why a rifle length is .5MOA for most irons and .66MOA for carbine length sights. You can put your sights wherever you want but there is a point of diminishing returns in sight radius and adjustment. The prevalence for people using irons today almost makes the issue a non starter but it's still valid if you place emphasis on marksmanship with irons.

      I have a unbranded red\green dot sight i keep on my shotgun (truck gun) made of pure Chineseum.
      After a year of use, it finally broke.
      Instead of tossing it I took it apart cleaned and fixed it, (the glass came loose and one of the wires detached) I slapped a new battery in it and it's still rocking, that was 8 months ago.
      I shoot field loads at clays every other weekend, and 10 to 15 slugs a month.

    The sight radius on your rifle appears to be about carbine length. NOW, to get home and measure mine...
    A longer sight radius can help those of us with older eyes, getting that front post out to where I can actually get a sharp focus--a reason optics are becoming attractive.
    Shooting with the 'irons' is also a way to bring some variety and fun back to the range!

    When two points are on the same plane, the distance between them is irrelevant. All sight radius does is vary the resolution of the adjustment. The longer the radius the finer the adjustment. Likewise, the shorter the radius the coarser the adjustment.
    From my experience, longer radii will allow for better fine tuning for better accuracy and shorter radii will allow for faster sight alignment for rapid target engagement.
    If there is any concern it is with the width of the front sight post covering the target, which can be changed to a thinner post depending on desired result. Truth be told, the front sight is a rangefinder on military rifles and is proportionally sized to match target width at a given sight radius and given range, which is normally the intended BSZ. For over 100 years that helped soldiers determine how far away the enemy was before modern tools came about. The math worked then and it works now.
    With the amount of available options these days, customize your rifle to the mission requirements and rock the crap out of it.

    I learned that shorter sight radius isn’t particularly a bad thing on short to mid range firearms. I learned this, when I took your advice on your preference of rear sight placement for my pistol with a red dot. I turn my red dot off at time and practice with the irons, and it’s actually easier acquisition of alignment with a shorter sight radius. So I imagine it’s the same on a pistol/sbr platform.

    I'm considering buis on an AUG that even with an extended rail available has measly 9'' of sight radius, that's an inch less than on an mp5k. besides those very rudimentary irons on top of an optic, It's just all too close together.
    5'' on a handgun is different since the rear sight is an arms length away, instead of close in.
    I'll try moving sights around in the rail space I have.

    I think every who owns an AR15 should have a red dot upper, a magnified whether it’s fixed or variable, and a iron sight/ fixed sight only. That way they can train on all the sighting system to see which one they prefer. If the WROL or something else happens you’ll be trained in all types. Just my humble opinion.

      No, but...
      on my defense rifle/range toy, my red dot went down, and I struggled (HARD) to hit torso sized targets @ 50 yards. I had to watch the splash, and walk the bullets into the target.
      (Seriously, turn off the red dot one time while you're at the range! It's TRULY harder than it looks!)
      And 50 yards covers the distance to a neighbor's porch, if you think about it.
      If there was a deadly threat attacking your neighbor, I'm pretty sure you wouldn't wanna 'spray n pray' in hopes of just hitting the bad guy only.
      Just something to think about. I found out the hard way: BUIS are worth their weight in gold, when your 'completely reliable' red dot goes down.

      Wreckz Alottovdatime, I think Steve was saying yes you want backup irons, but no they don’t have to be at absolute maximum sight radius because you’re unlikely to need every last iota of long-range accuracy capability in a defensive use. That was my take anyhow.

      Overall I agree and share your sentiment. There are some locations where a human might want that ability to shoot at 300. Remember there are still people who hog tie puppies and throw them in rivers.

    • @f308gtb1977
      @f308gtb1977 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      battousai07, the idea is that, IN GENERAL, you’d have a hard time claiming you faced an “imminent threat of grave bodily harm or death” from someone 300 yards away or more. So “self defense” at that distance is probably highly questionable at best, and the prosecution would surely go for 1st degree premeditated murder, since instead of hiding or escaping from this distance “attacker,” they’d say you essentially “planned it out.”
      “Your Honor, I shot him over 300 yards away because I was certain he was going to try to hurt me real bad. In 10 minutes, when he got to me.”
      Now, obviously, if I’m at my home with my wife and kids and an attacker is literally, actively firing at us from that distance, then sure, I’ll take my chances in court and return fire.

Mostly have used RCO’s, RMR’s and Aimpoints and I have only witnessed two failures. One was a bullet to an RCO (ACOG) (not mine thank god) and for obvious reasons it failed. The other was an RCO that was dropped on concrete and the only reason I consider it a failure is because it filled with water the following day during a down pour. Optic was still zeroed and usable but a good portion of the view was obstructed by moisture. Outside of those two cases I have never seen a modern quality optic fail.

    Your sarcasm is priceless bro. In all seriousness, I have a question. What is your take on using zeroed front and rear iron sights as a means to zero a red dot on n a rifle? It didn't work for me and thought I'm doing something wrong? I know you did a video regarding pistol rds but didn't find one on rifles.

    • @f308gtb1977
      @f308gtb1977 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Monte PR, if they’re fixed irons and if you want them both zeroed at the same range, then yes. If your irons are dead on, and you visually line up your irons, and move the dot to the center top of the front post, then your dot is just about good to go, needing only a couple shots for confirmation/fine tuning.
      If your irons have BDC elevation, then maybe, maybe not. Depends on zero ranges and what elevation your rear sight is on at the moment.

      @montepr803 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@f308gtb1977 Thanks bro, I was using a KAC rear and front. I'm starting to think I had the rear sight at an elevation different from my RD intended zero.

    • @f308gtb1977
      @f308gtb1977 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Monte PR 👍🏻
      Probably the most common dot zero is 50/200, and the KAC elevation drum rear sight goes down that low if I recall. So if the irons are dead on, just click it to 2, and use it for your rough dot zero!
      (Some non-flip-up rears are A2’s and only go down to 300, and that makes it more tricky, but you can still at least get on paper with it.)
      Whatever you do you’re going to confirm with live rounds. Visually Lining up sights just saves some zeroing ammo.

    An atmospheric EMP... Bwahahahaha!!
    Yeah, it could happen. And an asteroid could cause a mass extinction event. Both are possible. Both are less likely than me dying by a stroke or heart attack.
    Bigger problem I’ve found with sight radius is running out of adjustment at longer radius, on uppers that I would have hoped were built well enough that the rail was reasonably concentric with the barrel. The only way I could zero the BUIS was to shorten the radius. To approximate the radius of the typical AR-15 carbine rail usually got me there.
    Sight radius is way over-emphasized, imo. But I don’t know much. I’m not a trainer or anything. Just understand geometry fairly well. And like to shoot.

      You can make a EMP at home with radioshack materials, it will only be effective for a few feet though....but IF you rig up your car to be a an EMP you may generate enough power to knockout a 7/11 ;)

      SynthWarrior21, the ACOG is tougher than most back-ups, but it can’t hurt.
      Also you can mount 45° irons, since ACOG’s are fixed-power, and they’ll be backups as well as an option for super-short range shooting where the magnification of the ACOG can a hinderance.
